4 out of 5 eggsWorks for what it's meant for

Pros: First and foremost, this cable it made to connect a SAS drive to a SAS/RAID controller with an on-board SATA connector, NOT to connect a SAS drive to a standard SATA connection on, say, a standard desktop SATA controller. It will not work.

When use for it's intended purpose, it works. It could be explained a little better, hence the four egg rating, not five.

Cons: None outside of potentially explaining what the adapter is meant for a bit more clearly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Adapter

Pros: Able to use a SAS drive without a backplane.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Great for trouble shooting drives without a backplane. For those having problems SATA doesn't read SAS. You need SAS controller to read SAS HD's.

5 out of 5 eggsYou need a SAS controller!!!

Pros: It works and has a small connector body allowing the leads to clear the back plate without overly stressing the cables or connectors.

Cons: Could use longer cables for the power connection.

Other Thoughts: Please remember that the controllers on most motherboards will not control a SAS drive. You need a SAS controller in order to use these cables. You can use these cables on SATA drives with SATA controllers. They are much sturdier then the SATA power and signal cables. I use these on all of my SATA drives for that reason.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work

Pros: None....DO NOT BUY

Cons: The SATA connection mapping appears correct: computers do see that you've connected a storage device however, the power connection mapping is wrong: the SAS drive doesn't spin up.

Other Thoughts: I bought two assuming the previous reviewer had a "bad cable".....I was wrong. These simply don't work. One of the cables might have destroyed one of my drives as there was a tell-tale smell of over-heated/melting computer board.

1 out of 5 eggsSAS to SATA Cable

Pros: NO PROS UNTIL I SEE IT WORKING

Cons: I have yet to see this cable work. I have tried it with various intel & amd motherboards along with a combination of Seagate & Western Digitial SAS hard drives. Unfortunately the hard drives are never found by the bios or by the operating system (microsoft or red hat). If a specific hard drive and/or motherboard are need, it defeats the purpose that I got the cable for in the first place.

Other Thoughts: StarTech needs to release, at the very least, a small list of hard drives and/or motherboards this is cable is known to work with. If it is only the hard drives that matter, the only that list is needed.
