4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works like a charm with an older Sony optiarc slim slot load DVD drive I had. Windows 7 x64 detected the drive without and issues. The DVD drive performance does not seem to be affected by going through the adapter.

Cons: The power connection on the adapter does not like to let go of the 4-pin power lead from my PSU. I had to bend the clip to disconnect the power cable when moving my drive into another system.

Other Thoughts: Overall not a bad product. If the price was closer to the $10-$15 range it would have been a better solution opposed to purchasing a new DVD drive for around $30.

5 out of 5 eggsA Savior

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I have an older MSI Media Live that needed upgrading. The case has a built-in "slim" DVD drive that is IDE, but most of the newest "i?" compatible motherboards don't support IDE. This adapter allowed me to continue using the DVD drive built into my case with a new motherboard. It saved me the hassle of finding a replacement SATA drive that fit and aligned with the slot in the front of the case.

2 out of 5 eggsMaking hard to find not work.

Pros: Great idea! If it worked, would be fantastic. I plugged this in and nothing nothing in my BIOS. Nothing in device manager. I called the company to look for support. I was told that "Alot of mother boards don't like this adapter." As well as. "Alot of disk drives aren't compatable also." If that is the case why would you not list in your documentation that this product is incompatable with many devices. Or better yet list the devices it has worked on! Which you can tell from previous reviews that is not many.

Cons: Should trust comments more this thing is a waste of time spend the 20 bucks on a dvd-r slim drive w/ sata support and not use this garbage.

Other Thoughts: Gave 2 eggs because it's a good idea I had a laptop drive sidding around in the basement and I had 20 bucks to burn. If you're comfortable taking that gamble, I still would advise not to 20 bucks better spent on a dive would be your better be.

1 out of 5 eggsdoesn't work

Pros: n/a

Cons: It just doesn't work. Replaced the IDE/SATA combo with genuine TEAC SATA parts. Had to install o/s from USB in order to finish the system build.

Other Thoughts: Wasted several days of down time and had to do most of the software installation over the network or USB.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Seemed to do its job while it worked.

Cons: Stopped working after 9 Months. I probably actually used the CD drive about 4 times in that time period also.

4 out of 5 eggsworks as expected

Pros: Works like you'd want it to. Allowed me to re-use a laptop mini IDE dvd burner into a mini itx box with a sata only motherboard. I was quite happy overall with ease of use and the seamless performance of the item. This is really the only product I've seen that is designed to perform this function.

Cons: Price is a bit insane. Most users will be doing what I am, using old IDE drives on sata boards. This device at $20+$7 shipping essentially neutralizes any cost benefit you'd receive from using the old drive.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely be 5 eggs if it were in the $12-15 range with a more reasonable shipping fee. If they ever do go on sale I'd probably stock up on them for future laptop optical recycling.

1 out of 5 eggsmight work

Pros: small, screws in well, all the connectors fit

Cons: Doesn't work on TEAC DVD ROM DV-28E (slimline IDE, cable select), which is common on Supermicro server chassis. Doesn't detect the drive in BIOS on multiple computers with different chipsets and different SATA cables.

Other Thoughts: RMA'ed the first one to Newegg after talking with Startech about it. Paid shipping two ways on that one. Now, I'm returning the second one for refund because it also doesn't work and paying return shipping again. Net, I'm out about $20 for having had the privilege to waste time on this device. Ended up ordering a genuine Supermicro CDM-PSATA adapter elsewhere instead because Newegg doesn't carry it. If that doesn't work, all parts are now Supermicro, so they can't point fingers at a different manufacturer.
