5 out of 5 eggsReally handy

Pros: -Same speed when I tested it

-NO longer have to plug stuff into the back of the computer, which we know is annoying

-I work with lots of drives due to my proffessionDoesn't wear the contacts on my motherboard, so worst case scenario If the contacts on my cable wear out I just buy a new cable, rather than wearing out a port on my board.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: These are great, I should buy extyensions for all my ports

4 out of 5 eggsAsked for an RMA, did not need it

Pros: As stated in the title I had to ask for an RMA, but then realized I did not need it. When i first get the cable, I hooked it up to a external Seagate 2.5 inch hdd. My motherboard is an P9X79 pro mobo. All my USB 3.0 ports are controlled by the Asmedia ASM104x controller. When i first connected the drive using this cable (the drive worked fine without the extension) Windows 8 would pick up the drive but not be able to access it causing the system to hang. Tried it in different USB 3.0 ports did not work. Updated the USB 3.0 Firmware, still did not work. Asked for an RMA. After this I noticed that the download section for my Asus motherboard under utilities contained a file called USB3_Boost after downloading and installing the update (it is part of AI Suite the cable worked fine with the drive. Apparently, you need UASP installed for this cable to work with certain ASUS mobos when the USB 3.0 is on an ASmedia controller. RMA was then canceled

Cons: Had to install USB3 Boost and AI Suite. Needs UASP in order to work on ASmedia controller

Other Thoughts: Have not measured the transfer rates but for me the drive seems as response as it is without the extension cable. I also cannot speak to how the cable would react if used on a native chipset controlled USB 3.0 port (such as the on the z77 chipset)

1 out of 5 eggsStarTech USB3.0 6' cable - SLOW

Pros: None

Cons: I'm using this cable with a Seagate 1 TB USB 3.0 external hard drive. With the drive plugged in directly to the motherboard, I get ~45-50 MB/sec. Using the extension cable, I get ~ 8-11 MB/sec. I would not recommend buying this cable, at least to use with this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsWow, Its Just Cable...So I thought

Pros: None

Cons: UBS 3.0 cable 1.8m and it doesn't work here, period.

No USB-3 on case front so I thought I would add this cable to extend from the rear connector on my Asus Crosshair V board. Using a USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station I was able to transfer 430gb of mp3/m4a in 5 hours at USB-2 (20mb per).

On trying to use this cable I wasn't able to transfer anything as it found the 2tb Seagate drive but said the drive must be formatted first (being using for months and still had over 400gb of files on it, for transfer in any case.

No matter as none of the USB-3 slots I picked would see the the drive properly with StarTech cable.

I pulled the StarTech cable out of the mix and straight onto the first USB-3 I tried and you guessed it; it work fine. It hit 100mb per, but slid back to 75mb per and near the end of the transfer it was still hits around 64mb per.

The transfer at USB-2 was about 5 hours, USB-3 was just over 1 hour. USB-3 is much faster if only the USB-3 cables works and this one doesn't. $11 to StarTech and nothing for me. That's bad business in my book.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works as designed!

However, win 7 did not "see" my external hdd after connecting, although the power light came on. I originally thought the issue was that I was using an extension to lengthen the short USB 3.0 cable suppled with the device. I then hooked up the drive using only the short cable and that did not work either! Obviously, the issue was with Win 7.

I then un-enabled the USB 3.0 host controller (manage- devices), re-enabled it immediately and the hdd was then seen as a 3.0 device, and started working flawlessly.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Win 7 seems to have issues with USB 3.0. There are many discussions about this on the net. Also, make sure that you maintain a short cable connection (3 meters or less, especially when using extensions).

2 out of 5 eggs40MB/s

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cable only allows for 40MB/s to my brand new USB 3.0 external hard drive. When I use the cable that came with the external hard drive, I am able to achieve speeds of over 100MB/s.

Other Thoughts: Wish it would have worked like advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a USB 3.0 cable

Pros: Works great! It allows me to keep my USB 3.0 hub on my desk. My wife loves it now that she doesn't have to fumble around in the dark under my desk looking for the USB 3.0 port so that she can use a flash drive.

Cons: None. (But see below.)

Other Thoughts: After I plugged it in and started using it with a new USB 3.0 hub I purchased, I started experiencing random BSOD's every few days. Also, I was only ever getting USB 2.0 speeds. I originally thought it might be the hub or the cable that was causing the problem. After further research however, I determined that it was an old BIOS version that was causing the problem. The ASUS X58 board I bought back in 2010 was on the leading edge of the then-relatively-new USB 3.0 technology. Basically, my board was "USB 3.0 ready" but needed a BIOS update to handle a 3.0 hub (very few of which were in existence prior to 2011). Now everything works just fine.

So, basically, if you are having issues with 2.0 speed or weirdness like sudden CTD's or BSOD's after installation, check that 1)your BIOS is current, and 2)you are, in fact, plugged into your motherboard USB 3.0 port. Some of the boards from that time had a single 3.0 port and a few 2.0 ports. The CABLE, however, is NOT to blame.
