5 out of 5 eggsWorks as a combo to headphone+mike splitter!

Pros: It can be used to split a 4-position combo audio port into a 3-position (stereo) headphone port and a 2-position (mono) microphone port. Really! The (Newegg) title is misleading: the ground is common and so there is no way to split the other 3 (signal) positions into 2x2 independent signal positions. (For those born after 1965: 2x2=4; sorry for this stinker but once in a while I have to vent). If the mike socket is 3-port indeed, its 2 signal positions must be shorted in the splitter.

For the one-egg reviewers: if you receive the wrong product have it returned. And if you have connection problems try to figure out where that bad connection actually occurs. Startech does not make bad stuff but if you are so unlucky to receive a lemon just have it replaced. And do not pollute the reviews!

Cons: The icons on the separate black sockets are pretty much unreadable. So take apply a small piece of pink/green heat shrink on the mike/headphone socket.

4 out of 5 eggsCONDENSER MICS ONLY!

Pros: Cheap, snaps into place well, works well with dynamic microphones, and has headphone connection.

Cons: Does not work with condenser microphones!! Not stated in description.

Other Thoughts: This splitter only works with dynamic microphones! I was hoping when I bought this that I could use a shotgun condenser microphone, but the iphone did not recognize the device and continued to use the iphone mic. I tested it with a dynamic mic I had and it worked without any problems. It turns out that you must buy different adapters for condenser and dynamic microphones. It is a good cheap adapter but I wish it had been more specific as to how it could be used.

5 out of 5 eggsHandy Device

Pros: Combines separate connectors for headphones with microphones into a single 4 conductor 3.5mm plug.

Cons: Kind of pricey... but cheapest of all the alternatives.

Other Thoughts: Use these to adapt my two sets of PC/Gaming headphones to iPhones, Macs, and newer PC hardware. Works like a charm!

5 out of 5 eggsDoes everything and then some

Pros: Does EXACTLY what I needed it to do.

I have a pair of gamer headphones. Beefy suckers with two separate (3-pin) plugs for audio and microphone.

I also have a laptop with only a single 4-pin combined plug. This product allows me to connect the two.

As an added bonus, my android smartphone also works with this adapter.

There is no distortion. No loss of stereo-sound. No volume dampening. No downsides. This product does exactly what I was looking for and then some. The connections are tight, and this product feels fairly durable.

A couple bad reviews prevented me from buying this sooner, but that may have been a bad batch or something. Another popular retailer has this product listed with lots of positive reviews, so I gave it a shot from NewEgg. Very happy I did.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsNot what I expected

Pros: Durable, the connecters feel very secure when they snap into place.

Cons: This didn't separate the headphone line from the microphone line at all. The two output connecters produce stereo audio, and left audio instead of stereo audio and microphone. I thought this may be a manufacturing error, but I actually have two identical ones and they both work the same way. The only thing I could use this adapter for is a very bad 3.5mm audio splitter.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks badly

Pros: There aren't many of this type on the market.

Cons: The connection between the headphone and the cable, as well as between microphone and the cable is often lost. Sound is heard in one ear only, or in none. The listeners on the other end of the phone conversation complain of intermittent loss of my voice.

The labeling of the connectors is poor: black on black, barely visible.

Other Thoughts: Evidently this product was designed by unqualified engineers.
