The StarTech PS22USB PS/2 to USB Keyboard and Mouse Adapter converts a USB keyboard and mouse to PS/2 connections allowing you to connect a newer USB-based keyboard and mouse to legacy systems that only have PS/2 connection ports available.

Newer USB keyboards and mice cannot simply use simple adapters to connect to PS/2 ports, as the signal is of a different nature, so active conversion is required for full functionality.

Supporting plug and play installation with no software or driver requirements, the PS/2-USB adapter offers a cost-effective way to bridge USB peripherals with a PS/2 based computer. For systems that have both PS/2 and USB connections, this compact device can also be used to free up 2 USB ports.

  • newegg Converts a USB keyboard and Mouse to PS/2 Connections This adapter features two USB connections for separate keyboard and mouse input, converting a USB keyboard and mouse to PS/2 connections. It supports the use of combo 2-in-1 keyboard and mouse connections (wired only).
  • newegg Applications With this adapter, you can connect newer USB peripherals to legacy or specialized computer systems with PS/2 only, or use your system's existing PS/2 interfaces to free up USB ports.
  • newegg Easy to Use No drivers or software required makes connecting a USB keyboard/mouse via PS/2 truly plug-and-play. Compact design with no external power requirements for a simple, all-in-one solution.

4 out of 5 eggsImagined Long Usage

Pros: We have owned these devices for a number of years now.. well, to be honest, we've wished we could have owned them, because of our history with PS/2 connections and the declining number of PS/2 devices available, as USB proliferates.

Here we've worked with PS/2 plugs and ports, but we're restricted from using modern USB devices since it's so hard to connect them to PS/2 sockets. PS/2 is HARDWARE while USB is subject to the vagaries of software translation, and so is less reliable and persistent.

What's so strange is that, even today, in mid-2013, mainboards are still being supplied with PS/2 ports, sometimes for both mouses and keyboards, sometimes for one or the other - the ports are STILL THERE on contemporary mainboards. But manufacturers neglect to make PS/2 peripherals; therefore we need these adapters.

It's disappointing to read Repairman's experience - that they provide flaky, unreliable, performance. With an up-to-date redesign I would have thought that there'd be a considerable market for these things. Where are today's hardware entrepreneurs?

Cons: Total apparent lack of availability.

Other Thoughts: PS/2 isn't dead yet, in fact it persists, awaiting re-birth, good hardware that it is. It should be possible for both protocols to happily co-exist and complement each other.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work correctly

Pros: None.

Cons: I have tried every combination of USB mice and keyboards I own and/or can get my hands on. I've tried over a dozen of each and this thing will miss keystrokes and causes every mouse to be sluggish. The only way it's even usable is if I'm careful to watch the screen as I type, and not type fast. And don't plug the mouse into it.
StarTech support is no help either. They won't honor their "lifetime" warranty claiming that the device is working as it is designed and not even offering an exchange.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to work with a KVM that only supports PS/2 interfaces. I have over 6 of these in current use and this PS22USB was purchased to find a way of getting USB mice & keyboards replaced and/or upgraded on these multi-server systems.
But even standalone on a single PC this device does the same thing. And again, I've tried many different PC's. Not just servers. Along with many different OS's.
