4 out of 5 eggsDoes what its ment to

Pros: *Does what Its supposed to
*Cheap! (Even cheaper local)
*good little kit to have

Cons: *Its a bit slow (30 /mb) but its USB so what do you expect.
*Manual ... why even add it! but the item is Picky! YOU HAVE TO DO THE WHOLE PROCESS THE WAY THE MANUAL SAYS
(so - an egg for the lack of user friendliness or is it really for providing prof that most people are stupid and made me feel stupid? since I did not reading it the short 1 page manual)

but really it is kind of annoying that it "HAS TO BE" done this way.

Other Thoughts: (manual)
step 1 - Plug the hd stuff in
step 2 - plug in wall outlet
step 3 - plug in usb
step 4 - if it don't work then you didn't follow this 3 step process and now you are stupid for not reading the manual...

-- I wanted to try a DVD drive but didn't have any spare other reviewers say it didn't work and I didn't use the software so sorry no input about that --

Just used it tonight on my cousin's husbands pc, he has a failing hard drive and we found out it was failing using this product at first we though it could of been something else but after watching the hard drive stall in his pc and out of it ... I used this to back it up to my working machine so he doesn't lose his stuff. it took for ever due to the bad hd, but worked fine with the replacement hd.

Would I buy it again? ... Yeah I would buy it again

1 out of 5 eggsNot detected by OSX 10.7

Pros: Comes with a windows 98 driver.

Cons: OSx 10.7 does not detect the adaptor at all. It's not visible in the system information, and drives do not connect. Completely useless to me.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

Pros: None - I couldn't get it to work more than a few minutes at a time.

Cons: SATA power connector didn't work. I used the four-pin IDE power connector instead. This connector is not keyed properly allowing easy upside-down insertion of the power connector.

USB connector is loose and doesn't make a contact good enough for the device to be usable.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Mini USB connector

Pros: For the 10 minutes it worked, it was great.

Cons: Mini USB connector on the adapter is poorly designed and USB plug falls out. Trashed my hard drive.

4 out of 5 eggsGood adapter, poor USB cable

Pros: Great adapter to use for recovering a drive or turning an extra internal drive into an external.

Cons: The USB cable that came in the box has a bad connector on the mini side. It causes the adapter to not have a good connection. Poor connection could cause this adapter to trash a drive if it disconnects during writes. Other cables work fine.

Other Thoughts: I have used other USB to IDE/SATA adapters and I like this one best. I bought this one to replace the original Kingwin adapter I gave away to a friend accidentally.

5 out of 5 eggsBest IT hardware tool ever

Pros: using this tool I was able to inspect my collection of about 20 HDD that I've gotten over the last 10-15 yrs in about 30 min, No opening up my computer and swapping out drives and restarting, just simple plug and play. was able to backup a friends data to DVD using an internal DVD drive, adapter made it external with no issues. I think the people who have had issues either don't know how to use it or they have the jumpers set incorrectly on thier IDE devices.

Cons: A Locking SATA cable would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: Awesome and cheap. can't wait to get a USB 3.0 version.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Recovery Tool

Pros: I've used this kit more than a dozen times to help friends and family retrieve data from a dead computer. The hapless victim usually had a dead laptop from having spilled something on it and they have no backup. We remove the drive, put it on the kit, and viola! we have their precious data. Kingwin has many newer docking kits out now that run on USB 3.0 but I find this kit to be just fine for the older drives that I usually run into doing these operations. Following the instructions, which should be intuitively clear if you do technical work, will get you wonderful results. I've never tried the one touch backup so I can't comment about it. I just access the drive via Windows Explorer and move the files to a new USB drive. This thing does exactly what I need it to.

Cons: You call that a manual?!? They really ought to include some decent instructions. As so many other reviewers have pointed out:
1. Connect the interface to the bare drive
2. Connect the power to the bare drive
3. Connect the USB to your computer
Follow that order or you won't be pleased. It's also good to have a fan to keep the bare drive cool.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: This device made a great addition to my IT tool kit. I have a box of about a dozen HDD that are all 3.5 in drives. Most are PATA (EIDE) drives, but the newer ones are PATA. They range from 120GB to 2TB. All work perfectly. I have absolutely no problems getting this device to work perfectly each time. It's quick and easy to set up. Some of my drives are encrypted with Truecrypt and they work perfectly as well. Using this device is no different than having them in an external case.

Cons: None, see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I wish it were USB 3.0. Backing up data to a 2TB drive can be quite slow. Sometimes I do it overnight. This is not the devices fault, that's a limitation of USB 2.0.

Again, not the devices fault, but the HDDs get very hot. Use a personal fan on them when using this.

Read the instructions. Plug the logic (USB cable) into the computer last when setting up.
