5 out of 5 eggsWorked Great!

Pros: I had a tough time finding an IDE DVD RW for my Dell2400 P4. I married the Kingwin SATA-to-IDE adaptor to a new ASUS DRW-24B1ST (SATA DVD RW) plugged it in and it worked great. This setup cost me less than buying an new hard-to-find IDE DVD RW. I love it when tech works as advertised.

3 out of 5 eggsLeft much to be desired

Pros: Quick install, firm connection to drive and IDE cable.

Cons: Seems to have intermittent issues maintaining connection to PC. Installed for use with Samsung 64gb SSD. System locks up and drive stops showing up in BIOS. Ordered a different product in hopes that it will perform better.

5 out of 5 eggsA Life Saver!

Pros: Small, inexpensive, snug fit without the need of the adhesive so if anything happens to the drive (used it for a DVD Burner) then I can easily replace. Windows picked it up and worked like a charm!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: At least now I can offer solutions to people who have older (non-sata) computers needing new hard drives or dvd drives!

5 out of 5 eggsIDE SATA bidirectional adapter

Pros: IDE device to SATA cable or IDE cable to SATA device selectable by jumper block

Adhesive sponge on the SATA side of the adapter that glues it firmly to the backplate of a SATA optical drive or drive that is similarly built in an enclosure with a large flat backplate.

There is a peel off covering on the adhesive. Leave it in place unless you want to glue the adapter to the back of the drive

Cons: No jumper to select Master/Slave/Cable Select for the IDE connection. This is probably a SATA limitation, but does require an IDE drive on the same cable to be configured as slave.

The obvious limitation is that the SATA drive is limited to IDE connection speeds. This is an IDE problem not specific to any adapter.

Other Thoughts: The IDE drive that was set for Cable Select caused the BIOS to not detect the SATA drive connected on the Slave connector of the cable (middle connector). Did not test it on the Master connector with the IDE set to cable select. The drives coexist peacefully now with the SATA drive on the Master connection (end) connection on the IDE cable and the IDE drive jumpered as a Slave drive on the Slave (middle) connection of the IDE cable.

3 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: Works as stated. Lets you use a SATA drive on an IDE port. Can be made to work with a PS2 if you tinker with it a bit.

Cons: When I got the package from Newegg the first thing I noticed was the 20+ solder balls kocking around the inside. Not a good start. Next i removed the converter from the package and used super fine electronics tweezers to remove another 10 solder balls from the IDE side of the board. Hurrumph.... I then saw the 3M two sided tape that was laid down over the STA side of the board. At this point I was sure there would be something wrong there as well. I pulled the tape off to descover more solder balls. I also noticed that almost all the solder joints were bad. Using My multi meter I identified 11 bad solder joints for sure and the rest looked like junk. I broke out my soldering iron and redid every joint on the SATA side of the board the retested with the multimeter. All fixed. During this time I noticed Kingwin designed the board badely enough that they had to clip a corner off of the sata connector to get it to fit on the board. Thus the tape covering the lame workmanship.

Other Thoughts: All in all the item worked as stated. However I am certain that had I not retouched all the solder joints the converter would not have functioned at all. There were several joints where the solder paste had not melted at all and would have not have allowed electricity to travel through the joint. If you are willing to do an hours worth of rework then this item may be what you are looking for.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgraded old Tivo Series II to a new SATA 2 HDD

Pros: Did exactly what I expected. It worked to upgrade my old Tivo Series II, which had a ATA-133 IDE 40GB Maxtor HHD which started making clicking sounds. So I quickly purchased this IDE to SATA converter to upgrade the Hard Drive in the Tivo to a spare Western Digital 320GB Blue SATA 2 drive. The clone worked using linux DD and MFSTools 2. I definitely recommend this little converter for projects like this.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I read some complaints about using this converter with multiple IDE drives on the same IDE cable. Come on guys. Give this thing a break. It's like 10 bucks and works great. If you don't have enough IDE headers on you own MoBo I really think it's time you upgrade your rig.
