Tripp Lite's U236-000-R USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter allows your computer to instantly connect to a 10/100Mbps network through a USB port - no need to open up your computer case to add an internal Ethernet card. It's also an ideal USB-to-LAN alternative for a gaming console that needs network access in an environment lacking wireless capability. The adapter's compliance with USB 2.0 (480Mbps) ensures true 10/100 Mbps network speed without any compromise. Furthermore, the adapter is compact and is USB bus-powered; requires no external power adapter.
This review is from: Tripp Lite U236-000-R USB 2.0 to 10/100 Ethernet Adapter
Pros: I ordered these to use it with linux based systems, such as m-ITX servers to have multiple NIC cards (since mITX has only one PCI slot), Raspberry PI, and my android base Asus Transformer Prime tablet (I don't use wifi).
So far, without any drivers needed, I can report that the adapter works flawlessly with the tablet and my mITX zotac Z77 m-ITX board. The tablet runs Android Jelly Beans and the PC runs Ubuntu 12.10.
When I was pondering to buy this adapter, I could not find anywhere - not even the manufacturer's pdf specs sheets) the chipset these adapters use. That is key, because once you know the chipset, you'd know whether or not drivers for it are baked into your linux version.
In the end I bit the bullet and went for it, since these are so cheap. Most sites sells the exact same item in the range of $12-$18! However because newegg has high shipping prices (they often ship out of different warehouses, and charge you shipping fee per each box) I decided to order 6 units right away.
I did not succeed making this work on Rasbian for Raspberry PI, although I did not try hard enough - I just plugged in it. I will try few things later and also will report the chipset in this adapter linux reports
Cons: Shipping is more than the uni - if you will buy this, buy a number of them to make it worthwhile.
Other Thoughts: Wish manufacturer would at least mention the chipset name so we could do our own research and see if driver for it is loaded within our favourite linux distro. That's the least the manufacturer could do - list it on their specs sheets!
