Turn any drive into a hot swappable USB drive with this SATA/IDE to USB adapter from Vantec. The external power adapter ensures that you have enough power for 3.5" hard drives and 5.25" optical drives.
Because you don't need a case, this is a great setup for tech benches and repair shops. It makes data recovery and transfer faster since you don’t have to mount the drive into a system or external case first. Check and connect drives in a hurry with this versatile little tool!

Great, but be CAREFUL!
- Pros: This is a fabulous product. I own an IT consulting company and we've been looking for something that will allow us to connect any ide, sata, (desktop and laptop) hard drives quickly and reliably. This is it. Especially for the price I would not hesitate in purchasing this wonderful time saver.
- Cons: Very bad design relating to the connectors of the laptop power cable adapter and the SATA/IDE Adapter.
Before I start I will confess that I did not read the instructions for use. This is a simple and somewhat intuitive product, especially for techies. I didn't think there were any Cons until... I proceeded to attempt to copy copy data from a laptop HD to my laptop computer. I connected everything properly and could hear the windows default sound for connecting a device into the usb port, however the drive was not showing up. Upon further investigation I realized that the "2.5inch Power Cable Adapter" was not plugged in to the SATA/IDE Adapter. (Important part following:) I noticed on the end of the power cable and on the side I first looked at that there was somewhat of a plastic notch/rise and then matched it up with the SATA/IDE Adapter and plugged it in.
Please continue in "Other thoughts". I wouldn't want anyone to repeat what happened to me...
- Other Thoughts: I started to smell something like burning plastic, and then my computer shut down. Thinking I had fried my computer I opened it up and fortunately only a usb/connector card in my laptop was blown. Confused as to why this happened, I investigated and confirmed that the 2.5" power cable adapter was plugged in up-side-down. And in fact it would connect one way just as easily as the other way. Nothing prevented it from going in the wrong way. We bought two of these devices and I confirmed that the second device was the same way.
This is a great product and we'll still use but BE VERY CAREFUL with laptop hard drives.
Hopefully this will save you heartache, money and time.
Works well overall
- Pros: Inexpensive, all connectors needed for 3.5" and 2.5" IDE and SATA drives. No drivers required. Worked with any drive I tried - about 10 so far, from an old 20GB Quantum ATA66 to 500GB SATAII. I tried two different brands before and they were picky about hard drives.
- Cons: Flaky power connector, doesn't maintain contact if even slightly touched, must be bad crimping inside the molex plug. I'll have to fix this myself, not a big enough problem to request RMA.
- Other Thoughts: Except for the bad power plug it'd be 5 stars: very useful gadget to have around.

Great product!
- Pros: I bought this so I could easily get files from my older hard drives. It worked great and I was able to recover files I thought I wouldn't be able to get to anymore. I also used it to fully back up my original 60GB PS3 hard drive when I upgraded to a 500GB hard drive.
- Cons: I needed to format a hard drive with the FAT32 file system and ran into trouble with Windows wanting me to use NTFS. That has nothing to do with this product though.
- Other Thoughts: People at work ask me to fix their computers constantly. I take their hard drive and hook it up to this and run anti-virus/malwarebytes on my PC and I make easy money. This product has paid for itself many times over.
Works, but needs tweaks
- Pros: I can open my toolbox, and connect to any drive a client brings in in a matter of seconds.
The Power Supply has a on/off switch, That is nice to have.
- Cons: The SATA cable it comes with is garbage. I replaced mine in less than a week, get a longer one, it's worth it.
I wouldn't consider this "Hot Swappable" You cannot simply unplug one hard drive and plug another in, you must start the process over, but it only takes a few seconds.
Needs to have a separate USB cable.
- Other Thoughts: Read the instructions and you should not have a problem.
Mine lasted about a year before if finally went out (clients child ripped the USB wires out), and if it was not abused it would still be going strong.
Check the output on the power supply if you are able before you use it, frying a drive is simply not worth the few minutes of checking.
Works - for the most part
- Pros: - Uses supplemental power supply that has both Molex connector and adapter.
- Allows the connection of multiple types of hard drives including laptop. - Conviently allows access to data on partitioned and non-partitioned HDDs.
- Cons: - When the drive is connected by USB to computer then powered on, Windows XP doesn't always recognize the drive right away. Sometimes you must disconnect then reconnect the USB from the computer several times to get the drive to register.
- Sometimes the fooling around gets a little more elaborate and requires that you get just the right sequence of powering on/off and connecting and reconnecting cords to get drive to register.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm satisfied with this item. The directions are plain and simple. Make sure the switch on the power supply is off, connect the power supply and plug into outlet, connect SATA (or other), connect USB to computer and switch the power supply to the "on" setting. Sometimes it's just not as simple as that though as mentioned in the cons.
Is this thing a little fussy and maybe could work a little more smoothly? Yes. Does it perform so poorly that I wouldn't recommend it? No. Go ahead and buy it, but know that you might have to mess around with the sequence of connections to get it to work sometimes.
