2 out of 5 eggsBad Cabels

Pros: Works as intended. Awesome piece of tech for today, for archiving data and retrieving stuff from older drives.

Cons: The 4 PIN to Sata cable adapter is the lowest quality cable I have ever seen.
Cables are not clamped correctly and are falling out of the sockets.
Plastic is already somewhat brittle.
Hard drive connection To PC drops alot due to power cable, the smallest of bump to the cable makes it disconnect for a millisecond- Its impossible to do a proper format and I'm forced to do quick format.

I ended up having to leach of an internal power supply from my tower, instead of using the power supply provided with this product, do the the cable.

Other Thoughts: Works great but man that quality on the cables that came with it suck.

Pros: I purchased this adapter to pull data from some old IDE hard drives that I had when I was in college and grad school. It worked like a charm!

5 out of 5 eggsQuite useful

Pros: Simple plug and play
Fits a variety of legacy devices
Useful for emergencies

Cons: Can be a bit confusing to use

Other Thoughts: This little device was most useful to me when I had a wedding to shoot. Turns out I burned 8 DVDs that had corrupted data, as my current external burner was failing.(I run a system without an internal cd/dvd drive)

Thankfully I had an old system with an internal dvd burner, ripped it out, and hooked it up to this device and it saved my day! Albeit, took another hour or so to burn another 8 DVDs, but this device made it possible!

It can also hook up to older hardrives for data recovery, as well as the newer SATA hard drives!

I really dont use it often, but when I do use it, it's a godsend!

2 out of 5 eggsSuspect power wiring

Pros: Great it if works. I just went to use it more than a month after buying it.

Cons: ATX DC connector not completely wired.

The GND connection next to the +12V is not connected.

Other Thoughts: After reading some reviews claiming this thing blew up drives I checked the DC voltages on the ATX connector with a meter before using it. Normally it's +12V, GND, GND, +5V. The two GND pins should be common. They're not - open circuit between them. The +12V pin to the adjacent GND pin = 0V.

The GND pin adjacent to the +5V seems to be the only GND of the two that reads correct voltage to both +12v and +5v pins. On an IDE drive I have the two GND pins are common anyway so it shouldn't make a difference but this connector not being wired to spec does not fill me with confidence. I'm afraid to try it but I'm stuck with it.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: None.

Cons: I bought two of these. Both failed after precisely two successful uses. Neither is now recognized by any O/S when plugged in.

I thought the first one was no big deal. Now and then things fail. But the second identical failure? It can be nothing but bad design and/or bad quality control in manufacturing.

Other Thoughts: Never again. I'll find something reliable, because I NEED something reliable. But I'll avoid this product and the Vantec name.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

Pros: Great, simple unit to use, does every thing it claims.

Cons: Well the bad part was the one I recieved didn't work. No 5 volts from the power supply!!!! But for the price I am not returning it, would cost me over a 1/4 of the price to ship. So I just created a bench power supply, simple fix.

5 out of 5 eggsTested and examined it - seems solid and fully-functional

Pros: I just tested my new Vantec CB-ISATAU2 today (purchased elsewhere). I have seen everything from very positive to very negative reviews on this product, but my experience so far is quite good, though I have only owned the product for one day. So I would recommend this product based on my initial experience, but I cannot vouch for its longevity. I conducted my tests using Windows XP Pro 32-bit on a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with USB 2.0 ports. (I did not test the transfer speed as this is very much dependent upon the particular source and destination drives used and the nature of the data transferred (sequential or random). I don't feel like doing a proper speed test.) Here are the results:

3.5" IDE Hard Drive Test
This is an old IBM Deskstar from 2001. The connection to the IDE port and to the power were both solid and the connections were easy to make and held firmly. I initially used the Cable Select jumper configuration because that is what was already set and this worked fine. I then tried Master and Slave and both of those worked equally well.

I have read in at least one review that it may be important to turn on the power to the drive before connecting the USB to the computer, but connecting the USB before the power worked just as well for me. However, disconnecting the power before the USB resulted in the operating system not recognizing that the device was no longer present, until I disconnected the USB. No problems resulted. In neither case did I bother to "Safely remove hardware".

Sometimes when I connected the drive Windows gave me a "USB device not recognized" followed by a "This device can perform faster" notice. I did not determine what caused this, but the drive was still accessible in both cases. Sometimes there was a fairly long (I counted 32 secs. once) delay between the time I connected the USB and when Windows began scanning the drive and mounting it, particularly after receiving the above mentioned notices. This delay seemed to happen most consistently and for the longest time if I plugged in the USB and then unplugged it without ever powering on the drive, then powered on the drive and plugged the USB in again. Windows always recognized the drive eventually. So be patient before deciding that the device isn't working.

2.5" SATA Hard Drive Test
This is a Hitachi drive from 2008. My experience with this drive was the same as with the other, excluding the jumper configuration tests which do not apply, and the delay problem which did not seem as bad. Everything connected well and the drive was recognized and worked properly, regardless of which order I connected the power and USB. Again, I did not "Safely remove hardware" first and no problems resulted that I am aware of.

Cons: The molex to SATA power adapter seems of low build quality, but I had no problems with it.

Other Thoughts: General Assessment
As I stated before, all connections were easy to make and held firmly. Just as in the case of internal molex power connections, this one, too, is very tight. The power switch on the cord works perfectly and seems to be of decent (not excellent) build quality. The build quality in general seems decent as well. The power block has what I consider to be a reasonable weight for such low wattage (12.0V @ 2000mA and 5.0V @ 2000mA). Nothing rattles and everything seems reasonably durable. The only minor exception is the molex to SATA power adapter which appears cheaply constructed. But it worked, and it can be cheaply replaced if necessary.

The power switch block on the cord has a small, green LED on it which indicates the status of the switch. The data adapter has a red LED which lights up when the USB is connected, and flickers between bright and dim to indicate activity.
