1 out of 5 eggsStopped working

Pros: Worked as advertised for a period after purchase, often did not require drivers and would be immediately recognized by the BIOS or operating system, ready for mounting.

Cons: Unit stopped being recognized by the system after about 3 months. I determined it was a hardware failure as it wouldn't be recognized by windows or linux 'lsusb' command. Other peripherals worked in the USB ports.

Other Thoughts: I will be checking out other manufacturers.

4 out of 5 eggsVery handy item to own

Pros: Works with PATA, SATA hard drives and floppy drives. Great for testing bare hard drives on almost any computer. Eliminates the need to either open up the computer to install the drive internally or install the drive into an enclosure.

Cons: Poor quality power cable [cable from wall outlet to the power supply]

Other Thoughts: When I first purchased this, I thought that the contacts in the "inline" power switch were flaky. Two years down the road, the unit would not power up at all. Turns out the issue was a poor quality power cable. Replaced the cable with a known good unit. The adapter is now stone cold reliable. So if you have one of these and the green LED lamp on the power switch flickers or acts weird, try replacing the power cable. Over all, I'm very happy with this unit. Well worth the money [$12 on sale] I spent on it. I deducted 1 star because of the bad power cable.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for Data Recovery

Pros: This item has a variety of connections to allow you to connect to internal hard drives without installing them directly into the chassis of your system. It has assisted me in recovering data from over 10 hard drives to date with no problems whatsoever.

Cons: If you are recovering data from many hard drives in one sitting, it is a bit of a pain to connect and disconnect varying drives from multiple cables and power plugs, however this was expected, and is not much of a hindrance.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended. If backing up a lot of data, have a movie ready, read a book or go hiking!

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: Super fast transfer rates, reliable and relatively inexpensive

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I thought I had lost old all of my old digital pictures of my family and friends that I had stored on my newest computer. I came across an old dusty IDE harddrive in my storage and thought this would be a great way to access the data since the new mobos don't have IDE hook-ups anymore. Needless to say, this device did the trick and luckily the IDE harddrive had all the pictures I needed!

3 out of 5 eggsHandy tool while it worked

Pros: -very simple to use
-wide range of applications
-worked reliably for a couple months

Cons: -easy to plug in IDE port off center or backwards
-my unit failed after a few months

Other Thoughts: I work on and build PC's as a side business in addition to my day job. I wouldn't exactly call myself a professional but I test a few old IDE hard drives a day in the background while gaming and this was a great little tool to format drives before selling them. This adapter was just what I needed while it worked. I formatted somewhere around 25 older hard drives with capacities between 20-250GB over a couple months. I also used this adapter to burn a few CD's on older IDE CD/DVD drives and that worked fine as well. Yesterday I had a drive fail half way through formatting and I figured it was just the drive so I tossed in in the reject pile to take apart later for magnets and other fun bits. The next drive the same thing happened... and the next.... then I tried to burn another CD and iTunes would say there had been an error after a couple seconds. I tried a known good drive and a couple other PCs just to be sure. It's definitely dead. I would say I got my use out of it but I wish it would have lasted longer than a couple months. I'll look for a similar adapter of a different make.

5 out of 5 eggsWhen in a pinch, this thing works.

Pros: Convenient alternative for accessing hard drives, whether IDE or SATA.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have had this model for over four years and it has been very useful. I bought it originally to help recover information from family and friend's hard drives. However, I use it more at my job now than anything. I build servers, rack and tower style, and this adapter works like a champ when testing drives coming back from customers or when someone needs a new drive tested because it failed when being used in a Raid configuration.

2 out of 5 eggsNot everything I paid for.

Pros: Cheap, came promptly.

Cons: Did not come with SATA power adapter as shown in image and booklet.

Other Thoughts: I could give a better review if it came with everything that it should.

3 out of 5 eggsPoorly informed

Pros: Works like charm without cooling fan ... if you don't anything about PC

Cons: There can be IRQ conflict happening using USB (external drives) or IDE or SATA cables (internal connection not using this product). When the copying time is like crazy due to IRQ conflicts, stop the copying or the HDD will be fried! It fries more quickly when there is no cooling fans.

IRQ conflict happened alot with USB slots, when it happens you need to unplug the device and reboot PC and connect the USB device into another USB slot. There is no instruction telling you to do this! and the HDD will be fried if you don't know that the copying time shown is crazy and you shouldn't copy over 40GB at a time and by every 40gb sized copying the HDD needed to be cooled for 1 hour.

Usually it's the HDD installed in your PC (and between it and the OS) that has IRQ or psycho-cyclinic reading issues and not ALL due to the USB device connected (more like OS to USB device conflict differently per boot of OS and per change of USB device), making the copying time go crazy! It's the OS and USB slot that works at one time and not at another time, you may need to installed a second boot OS to fix this as well as connecting the USB device to another USB slot! F Bill Gates the ret8rd who gives so little information on using PC! totally a noob! 8 = a @

Imagine to copy mere 2 MB and it shows a copy time of over 2 hours! What kind of OS is that?
