3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: When it works, it does what it's supposed to do.

Cons: Ordered 2, 1 is still currently functioning, the other is faulty. While the 1 is working, it is EXTREMELY slow. I expected to see some speed drop over standard ATA 133, however, I am getting MAX 8mbps r/w.

Other Thoughts: Use only in emergencies, for ongoing use just bite the bullet and upgrade.

4 out of 5 eggsSolving an Obsolete Problem

Pros: Cleanly designed, Includes required cables. Seem as fast as the original equipment. Very simple to use.

Cons: None that come to mind

Other Thoughts: Allows me to use two serial devices a DVD writer and an older IDE hard drive. Both work well with my Asus Sabertooth motherboard, If it's is slow (remembering that neither of these devices is state of the art. it is not apparent.

5 out of 5 eggsVantec IDE to SATA Converter

Pros: I bought two of them and so far I have just used one. This allows me to use my older IDE DVD drives instead of junking them and it works. Plugged every thing in and drive showed up with a newer motherboard.

Cons: With the current price of DVD drives the price for the adapter could be lower.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked. I like.

Pros: Worked. Gives new life to old devices as so many others have stated.

Cons: Not really a con just a suggestion to the manufacturer. Hint: On some devices 'CS' should be used as an alternative to the 'MS' select jumper switch. On my old WD60(60gig 133) I originally selected 'MASTER'(MS). Though found, recognition of the device when selecting 'MS' for my drive was slooowww. After allowing my hard drive to be a single or master(CS). Everything was normal. This meant simply removing the jumper switch from the drive. Everything went smooth.

Other Thoughts: On my motherboard(BIOSTAR A68N-5000) I was able to toggle between legacy and UEFI system wide settings in my BIOS. I can only imagine the hassle for a UEFI only system for newcomers to PC'ng. Though each method of selecting between legacy and UEFI will be different on other motherboards. Be sure to have the latest BIOS update that supports the difference between hardware configurations.

Unlike other comments about speed loss on their devices when using this converter. I had no such problems. I actually had a speed increase compared to having the hard drive on an old ASUS P4-PE motherboard. Which I would attribute to the motherboard's handling of the device or the age of hard drive model itself. But that is just my experience with the converter. It is note worthy of the beforehand mentioned problems experienced by other users using the converter as well. Because each of us are going to go in different directions when selecting hardware.
