5 out of 5 eggsNice Product For The Money

Pros: I have purchased several powered SATA to USB 3.0 transfer cables in the past year and have not had good luck with any of them. One operated fine with a 2.5" drive, but the power supply didn't have enough "juice" to power up a 3.5" drive.

This Vantec NexStar appears to be an exception. I have had it about a month now and have used it a number of times with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives and SSDs and have experienced no issues whatsoever.

I first used it to create a system image (74.4GB) of a Samsung Pro 256GB SSD on a 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM SATA 6GB drive, and it made the image in 7 minutes and 31 seconds. As a test, I connected the same Seagate drive directly to a SATA 6GB connector on my computer and it made the same system image in 7 minutes an 2 seconds.

Cons: Fairly minor.

The power switch is located almost directly in the center of the power cable which I find a bit odd (why not locate it closer to the SATA connector?) but it's not enough of an issue to dock it an egg (if you need the power switch closer to you, simply plug the wall wart into an extension cord).

Other Thoughts: The (wall wart) power supply cable is 62" long and the USB cable (attached to the SATA adapter) is 48" long. It's a heavy duty cable, but it is long enough so as not to be inflexible (it's 0.19" -- or 4.5mm thick -- or about 2/3 the thickness of most modern SSDs).

There is a red LED that lights up when you turn power on. The SATA connector "case" is about 2/3 the size of a deck of cards and about 80 percent as thick.

It's a fairly simply unit but the construction appears to be sturdy and it has worked fine so far. If you are looking for a powered SATA to USB 3.0 transfer cable, this one is decent for the money.

I would recommend it to friends.

5 out of 5 eggsJust works as a tool should

Pros: I ordered this in preparation of moving to a SSD on a laptop. Two days after I got it, a hard drive on a different machine had problems and this tool worked perfect. I was able to power on the 3.5 1.0 TB WD drive and copy all the data files. Computer did not have USB 3 so it took longer than it could have; but the Vantec adaptor worked great the whole time!

Cons: I have not had any yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: This is a super little adapter and works incredibly fast. Mechanical drives still register over 110 MB/s through this and It's great to be able to make improvised external HDs or add extra capacity.

Cons: Only problem is the power switch literally seems to do nothing as the USB powers it just fine and when plugged in to USB, the power switch won't interrupt and turn it off.

Other Thoughts: I have an older model of this as well and they are both pretty solid, fast, and great to add extra HD capacity (I have over 8 HDs).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well! Fast!

Pros: Works great and is fast!
USB 3.0
Powered - 3.5" drive support
On/off switch on power cord

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: If you don't plug the power in and you plug in a 3.5" drive, nothing bad happens, it doesn't try to spin it up or anything, it just acts like it doesn't recognize it. And you don't need the power supply to use it with 2.5" drives!

Also when you safely disconnect, the drive will stop spinning, and then you can remove it without unplugging the USB cord, and then you can plug in another drive without un-plugging and plugging in the USB cord.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's Good

Pros: This adapter makes it so much faster to transfer data and make image backups (using Macrium Reflect).

I've been using Crystal Disk Mark to test speeds on this adapter, hooked up to a SanDisk Extreme 120GB SSD. Reads and writes with this adapter, using USB 2.0 are usually around 30 MB/s, up to 40 MB/s (depending on the computer you are using).

Using USB 3.0 ports:

Dell PowerEdge T110 II Server:
Seq. Read: 253 MB/s
Seq. Write: 159 MB/s
4K Read: 16.52 MB/s
4K Write: 25.91 MB/s

Dell Latitude E6430 Laptop:
Seq. Read: 179 MB/s
Seq. Write: 154 MB/s
4K Read: 18.17 MB/s
4K Write: 41.63 MB/s

Using USB 2.0 ports:

Dell PowerEdge T110 II Server:
Seq. Read: 33.54 MB/s
Seq. Write: 29.95 MB/s
4K Read: 7.1 MB/s
4K Write: 8.0 MB/s

Dell Latitude E6430 Laptop:
Seq. Read: 41.10 MB/s
Seq. Write: 39.37 MB/s
4K Read: 9.9 MB/s
4K Write: 13.6 MB/s

The greatest difference was realized on the PowerEdge server which has a cheap IOCrest / Etron 188 USB 3.0 card in it.

I'm not seeing improvements quite as dramatic from within Macrium Reflect. In that software my backups are taking about half as long, sometimes better and sometimes worse.

Cons: Some of the other complaints are indeed valid. And yet I'm willing to overlook most of them because they are so minor.

One of my complaints is that I have to remove brackets and holders from hard drives in order to hook this thing up. Minor complaint, I know.

One other point. I always power up the drive before you plug in the USB cable. I never have trouble this way with the adapter not being detected.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks at USB 3.0 speeds!

Pros: Fast, very fast

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was skeptical but this thing works. I mount my 2TB drives to my new Ultrabook through the USB 3.0 ports and the speeds are crazy fast. Forget eSATA or FireWire - this is the new standard and no need for high-end equipment - if you want to mount a SATA (6GB/s) to your PC then just buy this.

5 out of 5 eggsFAST for cloning a new hard drive

Pros: cloned a new hard drive in less than an hour can now use the spare drive and connect it as an external drive if i felt like it but mainly bought it for that cloneing its fast it works and well thats it not much else to say

Cons: not any because it doesnt do much but transfer stuff you get an adapter plug into a wall not a problem but usb is usually powerd by itself mabye for better speeds the port is dedicated for transfer than power? who knows who cares honestly the usb 3.0 cord is a little long could tie it up though

Other Thoughts: works FAST take advantage of 3.0 for the love of dog (spelt backwards) if you have it use it!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Have used it in the computer shop where I work every day since around the time this thing first hit the market. Didn't buy it from Newegg, I couldn't find one on here at the time. Never had an issue with this adapter at all except in some older software bootdisks (hdd cloning software) I use my other vantec adapters for that (usb 2.0 versions). This adapter is very fast. I'll be buying the SATA III version soon. They didn't have that version when I bought this one.

Cons: Don't have to keep unplugging the USB. Just kill tghe device with the power switch whenever you are finished with the hdd. Makes for very fast turn around time because I don't have to fumble with the back of my computer trying to find the USB 3.0 ports.

Other Thoughts: None. Great product.

1 out of 5 eggsNot ready for prime time

Pros: Very easy to connect.

Cons: System usually finds an attached drive. If not, you need to reboot. Once found, drives don't stay found. Sometimes you can get it back by switching off and on. Other times need a reboot. Most frustrating is having file copy or backup software (both Acronis and EASEUS) either not find the drive at all or losing it in the middle of the backup. This thing makes eSATA problems seem trivial.

Other Thoughts: Using a new ASUS Sabretooth X58 motherboard so that not the problem. Also tried direct to motherboard and through a Vantec hub.
