2 out of 5 eggsDidn't recognize Samsung 850 EVO

Pros: Comes with a power adapter which supplies power needed for 3.5" drives. USB cable is very thick which seems to indicate quality however harder to work with. Has a big rocker power switch on the power cable. Has a two color light, red to show drive connected and blue to indicate data connection to computer. Excellent phone customer support and email. Rare these days.

Cons: Didn't recognize a Samsung 850 EVO SSD which is what I bought it for, for a data transfer. Customer support told me the compatibility team is aware of this and is looking for a solution. They don't know where the issue is since it did however work fine with the Samsung 840 (older) and the 850 PRO! A little bulkier, not as sleek as another brand, (Unitek). Connection to drive seems not as tight as you'd expect. I think the Unitek I tried was a little sturdier and the unit was smaller/sleeker, except that one was not SATA 6 Gbps, but was USB 3. No switch on that one.

Other Thoughts: There is always a risk in running a drive bare out of a case, as there is no shielding and it's in a riskier situation. Shielded SSDs are less of a problem. This device is for temporary/emergency use. I would recommend being careful before buying this for SSD use since it might not be compatible with some drives.

1 out of 5 eggsLoose connector ruins it

Pros: Large on-off switch

Cons: - Loose connector causes drive reset, sometimes without even touching the desk/drive (probably because of vibration)
- Doesn't recognize SSDs. Tried a new Crucial MX200 500GB SSD which works fine in a different adapter.

Other Thoughts: Main reason I bought this is to have an alternative to a dock to quickly hook up a drive. Normal expectation is the connection will be solid. If a product doesn't work reliably, then it is just junk.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply does what you're buying it for

Pros: Just works. No drivers. On/off switch. Works for all size HDD"s.

Cons: None yet, would be nice to have the switch on the adapter rather than in the cord if I had to be picky.

1 out of 5 eggsHD Killer

Pros: Quick Transfer Rates

Cons: Has killed 2 hard drives on me now. Both new out of the box. Thought the first one was bad luck. Worked for about an hour. Unplugged when I was done with it, plugged it back in when I needed it... click of death. 2 weeks later, another hard drive, unplugged it for 30 seconds to reroute the wire, plugged back in, hard drive is completely dead.

Other Thoughts: Aside from having good throughput on the usb 3.0 bus, this thing is garbage. Kills hard drives, and the connector is a bit on the loose side.

1 out of 5 eggsHard drive toaster

Pros: None. On its first use caused the loss of a new hard drive.

Cons: Fried my hard drive.
Having attached it to a new 320GB SATA Black Scorpio (which worked good on a MacBook) I noticed the HD was overheating - too late though, that HD never worked again.
What now? having lost confidence in the NexStar CB-SATAU3 I would not plug another HD into it, can not recommend it at all.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat if you like frying SSDs

Pros: When it worked it was fast, passed through the SMART data to the computer.

Cons: After using this device sparingly for a year or so, and of course on a high visibility project for the owner of the company, this device decided to fry the SSD i was working on. Literally. I smelled burning coming from the drive. It disconnected itself from the machine a couple times then it must have fried the controller. Thanks. Now all that data is gone.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works fast on USB 3.0 (while it lasted). Works with DVD Burners using overburn feature.

Cons: Connection to the back of the drive was quite loose, though it never disconnected on me while burning. I used this only with my Sony Optiarc Burners for about 2 weeks, worked fine, then about a month later when I went to plug this in... nothing.

Other Thoughts: Go with a BYTECC. Got one of those, though it's only USB 2.0, at least it works though.

1 out of 5 eggsReceived EU power plug instead of USA

Pros: Couldn't say since it couldn't power a laptop drive without a power cable

Cons: Wrong power adapter. Received two rounded (EURO) prongs instead 2 flat prongs (US)

4 out of 5 eggsNice wee unit

Pros: The speed is great. Has an on and off switch very handy.

Cons: Only thing for me is that the switch should be closer to the unit instead of the wall outlet. Its a pain when the outlet is behind the desk going to extend the cord to fit my needs.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Switches

Pros: The speed is very good. The drives read and write about the same as an internal drive.

Cons: I bought 3 they all would drop out if you moved the wire near to the switch. I returned them and all 3 of the replacements had exactly the same problem. Rather than RMA them I clipped the switches out and soldered and shrink wrapped the wires and now they work fine.
