2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works well when it works.

Cons: First unit was DOA. Returned for a replacement which worked. After a month of use the SATA connector broke making the SATA connector unusable.

3 out of 5 eggsFlimsy Build

Pros: Easy setup.
It works.
Inexpensive.
Came with all needed cables.

Cons: Very flimsy build.

Other Thoughts: The plastic casing popped off after several uses over time. It popped right back on though, and it works fine. Super glue would be a good fix if I needed it more often.
I've been using it to access old HDDs to see the contents.
Works fine for that.

4 out of 5 eggsOne Gotcha

Pros: Works well with hard drives except 2.5" PATA/IDE Hard Drive in some cases.

Cons: 2.5" PATA/IDE Hard Drive mode does not involve the use the power supply. Thus it depends on powered the drive only from the USB port's power. I have 2 USB3.0 ports on a PCIe adapter card. For convenience, I usually use a 6' USB3.0 extension cable to connect to my USB3.0 devices. In this case, there was not enough current to operate the drive via the extension cable. When I crawled behind my PC and plugged the USB adapter directly into the PCIe USB card, it worked fine. I suspect that a powered USB3.0 hub could be used successfully too.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks impressive.

Cons: Bought this to work on old PATA drives, PC USB didn't recognize it, tried it on another PC same story.

Other Thoughts: Good concept, if it worked, I'm not getting another one of this make.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome gadget

Pros: Plugs right in, no setup, no driver even on a 2005 Dxll laptop. Didn't measure throughput, but that was irrelevant. Cloning didn't work due to Windows balking at extreme change in drives, but not fault of the adapter. So I just backed up my existing drive, put in the upgrade and replaced files. Adapter even comes with a power supply to power a full size drive while you're backing it up. Yes, a flash drive probably would've worked, but this thing is so versatile and handy. Every tech should have one, and I'm the kind of guy changes his own oil just to save $5!

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsNot sure it works

Pros: Not sure

Cons: I am copying a 1TB drive using DriveImage and at the 20% mark the drive stops responding and then connects to the PC and the auto play pops up. This of course kills the backup process. I tried this three times using different USB3 ports and each time the same thing happened.

I then put the drive in an older Thermaltake USB2 dock and the backup process worked fine.

Other Thoughts: Vantec, I think we have a problem

3 out of 5 eggsOK at best.

Pros: Works well with IDE and SATA I drives and has good speed and a stable connection. NO drops at all with IDE and SATA I.

Cons: Does NOT work well with SATA III drives. Gets hot, connection gets dropped, drives get corrupted, etc. Reformatting the drive I tried to use with the Vantec right now...A WD Green 3TB (WD30EURX).

Other Thoughts: It's a shame....A potentially great product takes a dirt nap when it comes to SATA III drives. One other reviewer mentioned an inadequate power supply. I had no issues with the power supply and I've used it to format a drive hooked up to my MB.

In my opinion, a ood product for rescuing data off of old drives. For use as a regular external hookup....Not a good idea.

3 eggs due to the fact that it doesn't do what it is advertised to do.

3 out of 5 eggsContinual drops of WD 3TB SATAIII

Pros: Works well with IDE and SATA I drives.

Cons: Continually drops WD Green 3TB SATA III drive. Disappointing...Tried GPT and MBR with partitions...NO LUCK. Even tried USB 2.0 port.

Other Thoughts: This adapter works flawlessly with IDE and SATA I. SATA III....Not so much. I haven't used it with SATA II. Maybe I just got a bad one with regards to SATA III? My drive was manufactured in December of 2013....Incompatibility?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly.

Pros: Worked perfectly on 2.5" laptop drive, 3.5" SATA drive and 3.5" IDE drive.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I've had these drives from old failed computers sitting around for years and finally decided to try and retrieve the data from them. Hooked them up and trasferred them to my PC without a problem.

The 2.5" laptop drive does not require a the power supply connection, but both 3.5" drives did.

USB 3.0 won't matter on a slow drive (like my laptop drive) but the 7200 RPM drive transferred data very quickly.
