2 out of 5 eggsbad power suppy switch

Pros: Works when connected off a 4pin power header inside the case. Was able to transfer old files and backup on new drive.

Cons: The supplied power supply is junk, The on/off flip switch is intermittent. Often times drive won't spin up or while in use the power will cut off, flick the switch housing with your finger and power will come back to drive. Need to reengineer the switch and this product would get 4/5 stars.

Other Thoughts: Handy device if you're using a laptop or moving it around from PC to PC. Really need to fix the power switch design. I will switch over to a PCI-e card with a legacy IDE connection.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Junk

Pros: fast easy setup

Cons: power supply has a power switch wired into power cable that failed after only 6 months of light use

Other Thoughts: Not suggested for optical drives or drives you use on a daily basis

1 out of 5 eggsBroken out of box

Pros: Broken out of box. Otherwise in concept a handy tool.

Cons: I purchased this model to replace the USB 2.0 model, which I currently own. There is cord with power switch that attaches to the power brick and the hard drive. This cord or the switch was damaged out of the box. I was able to use my power brick and cord from the USB 2.0 model to get the adapter to work. Incidentally, the 2.0 model had damaged plastic molding around the SATA connector, but it did not impair functionality of the device. Based on having received 2 damaged parts on 2 consecutive generations, I can only conclude that quality control is poor and advise that you look to a different manufacturer.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't think it's very reliable

Pros: Gonna have to say none at this point.

Cons: Cheap connectors that must be seated carefully
Doesn't seem to work with some drives where other USB adapters do

Other Thoughts: Go with something else. I've used a bunch of these USB to PATA/SATA adapters and can say this one is not very reliable. Not sure what the issue is but when connecting to a good drive and reliable PC it isn't recognized by USB PNP when other adapters are (Rosewill).

5 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 Version... Works Great!

Pros: It does what it is supposed to, hooks up to hard drives that are for whatever reason external or not connected to the PC internally anymore so that you can read them via USB. I hooked up a couple drives both SATA and IDE via USB 3.0 onto my PC and it worked flawlessly as I retrieved 80GB from one drive and put it on a different drive.

Cons: I guess that it will only read as fast as the hard drive can? Really no cons to be honest.

Other Thoughts: I had the original model of this product from a few years ago which still works perfectly as well... so now I've got two... really good products I highly suggest for techs or even the average PC user who has old hard drives they want to check into and retrieve data from.

3 out of 5 eggsPicky, but it works

Pros: -Faster than USB 2.0 (VelociRaptor read speeds around 150MB/s)
-Pretty small

Cons: -It is picky with SATA drives (haven't tested IDE), sometimes it'll recognize the drive and sometimes it says something along the lines of a bad address...see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Initially couldn't get it to recognize a 450GB VelociRaptor using the included USB cable. I used a different cable that forks off into both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 and plugged them both in at the same time. The drive finally recognized and I was able to remove the USB 2.0 plug and use USB 3.0. Most of the time now I can plug in USB 3.0 to start and it will recognize. Sometimes a restart is required to get the drive to recognize. Using Windows 8.1 64 bit and a SATA 450GB WD VelociRaptor.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap power supply

Pros: The USB 3 throughput was very fast

Cons: The power supply is very cheap. It stopped working after a couple weeks. I popped it apart, and found the 3 prong connector is poorly soldered to the board, and poorly attached to the case. The solder pads had broken off, and the connection was not being made. I manually re-soldered it, and repaired the board, which got me through a drive clone, but I am going to throw this away. Not worth the money in the end.
