reasonable price
- Pros: it work with 2.5 & 3.5 hard with sata port
- Cons: the only one is the shipping fee it's kinda high
Excellent! Solid backup solution.
- Pros: This has probably been the single best external drive solution I've ever purchased; usually I buy an enclosure and a drive, but this is far better. I suppose it doesn't offer the drive as much protection, but since the drive isn't going anywhere anyway I don't think it's too much of an issue.
- Cons: There is only room for one hard drive—hardly unexpected. In retrospect, I wish I'd bought the version with two slots. I hadn't expected this to be of such high quality, so I opted for the lower-risk option of buying the cheaper single slot item. I'll probably upgrade to the two-slot version in the future, since I do have another external hard drive with a failed enclosure from which I'd like to recover the data.
- Other Thoughts: If you're the sort of person who has multiple hard drives lying around, I would consider this indispensable—provided, of course, they're all SATA drives. I've seen IDE-to-USB bridges before that are basically a glorified cable, but I feel much more comfortable with the dock solution anyway; I imagine there is also an IDE version out there.
An eSata version would be nice, but that would require eSata on my laptop anyway, so it's a moot point. It will be interesting to see what happens with USB 3.0, not to mention the recently-demonstrated Apple/Intel "Light Peak" connectors.
Should have trusted fellow NewEggers...
- Pros: Good price, dock is physically pretty solid for the price. Self adapts between 2.5 and 2.5 drives. Power Switch is nice so it's not always on.
- Cons: HORRIBLE transfer speeds, like around 4 MB/S. Read a review before I purchased that said dock corrupted his data, didn't believe it. Sure enough 3/4 of the way through a 750GB transfer from a docked 1TB WD the OS threw out the notice that the files were corrupt. Ran tests on the hard drive, and while it was still usable, the current data was trashed and had to format. That drive had always been fine before that - thankfully had a backup. Won't do that again.
- Other Thoughts: NewEgg should drop this product so it doesn't taint their stellar reputation.
