This review is from: BYTECC BT-UDVI02 DVI Share-Video Adapter
Pros: Seamless over USB (comes with usb cable). Ran a 1680x1050 monitor through USB and ethernet, both worked ok. I tested it on windows XP.
It comes with an app that can search your network for the monitor. App installs easily, and found monitor quickly. You also have to install some drivers off the cd, which was also seamless.
Useful, easy, helpful. Would've given 5 stars if it could keep the refresh rate high when doing full-screen HD material.
Cons: Some people hate mini cds (worked ok for me). LED lights are kinda distracting, but you can flip the little device over.
The following small complaints but are worth mentioning, especially if you want to use this for gaming or HD video streaming over the network.
I found that, if my laptop was on wireless, but the monitor was on the wired network, the refresh rate suffered on full-screen apps. If both are wired, refresh rate on 720p youtube videos seemed bearable (less than 60 though).
I was surprised to find that, even through USB, full screen HD videos (I tested 720P) had a noticable drop in framerate. It would probably be bearable for DVD though.
Was a little disappointed that the max supported resolutions are lower than modern monitors. However, this seemed to be the case with all such devices. Maybe its a USB2.0 or ethernet restriction.
Other Thoughts: Seems to work just fine. I was skeptical because these items didn't seem too popular, but I'm happy I got it.
The driver seems to try to optimize bandwidth by only sending what has changed. Therefore, I found that full-screen apps like videos, etc caused the refresh rate on the display to be lower than text-only usages.
Overall, I found that this was a perfect way for me to add a 3rd monitor to my laptop for programming/text purposes. I probably wouldn't use the device for streaming HD video or gaming over ethernet (the RJ45 connection).
However, I think that the ethernet connection seemed fast/responsive enough to share a projector over the network, as long as everyone is wired (depending on if you want to show HD material or not or what kind of refresh rate you need).
Really, in the end, I was positively surprised at the performance it could give.
For other people entering the multi-monitor productivity world, I would suggest using ultramon for managing > 1 monitor.
