2 out of 5 eggssub-par

Pros: cabled dongled product

less chance of slipping out of hdmi port

best thing about this is it can be installed by the vga cable's screws

Cons: I bought this to see if it would perform better than Dino's adapter which is cheaper... this startech product does not.

image is noticeable more blurry, less bright and crisp than dino's cheaper adapter

Other Thoughts: I might return this if I am not too lazy

2 out of 5 eggsMay Not Work For You

Pros: Probably works as advertised

Cons: Didn't work for me

Other Thoughts: I bought this based on the Q&A information. Someone asked if this could be used in reverse, VGA to HDMI. Several people said that it could. It did not work with my PC and Visio tv.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Steven,

We wish to apologize for any confusion surrounding the intended use of this product. We would like to help clarify some things.

This product is intended to connect an HDMI equipped source device, such as a laptop or desktop computer, to a VGA display or projector. The product only functions in this manner, and cannot be used to connect a VGA source device to an HDMI display. We apologize if this has inconvenienced you.

If you are looking for an adapter that does connect a VGA source to an HDMI display, we suggest product VGA2HDU, seen on Newegg here: This is a USB powered device, that also supplies audio through the attached USB cable.

If you have any other inquiries regarding this, please feel free to contact us, and kindly reference case number 303-219546. We’ll be glad to help.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with an older laptop nor a new laptop

Pros: Good price

Cons: I was warned in other reviews about underpowered laptop HDMI ports. So I tried this adapter anyway with an older laptop and a brand new laptop. Both had the same results with this adapter. The monitor will display for about 2 seconds and then disappear.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Timothy,

Thank you for reviewing our HD2VGAE2 video adapter, and we're sorry to hear about the incompatibility you experienced.

As you mentioned, this adapter may not work properly with underpowered HDMI ports. While this may be the cause of your issue, we would like to troubleshoot with you further in order to verify the exact cause. We would appreciate knowing the make and models of your laptops.

If low HDMI power is indeed the cause, we do offer an adapter that utilizes external power, allowing it to work with underpowered HDMI ports. Product HD2VGAA2 has a Micro USB port for powering the device, and requires the use of a Micro USB to USB A cable. Both the adapter and a 1 ft cable can be seen on Newegg below:

If you would like to speak with us regarding the adapters, please contact us directly and reference case # 303-220601.

Thank You,

Customer Support

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Plugged it into the HDMI port and the VGA connector for my monitor. Has worked since then with no issues. I also have another VGA monitor connected to the VGA port in the video card. Dual screen use with no issues! This includes gaming - mainly "World of Tanks"

Cons: None to date

1 out of 5 eggsMisleading

Pros: Don't know since I can't get it to work

Cons: only works with powered HDMI output

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have a powered HDMI output port or this won't work and none of their materials will tell you that. Very misleading advertising.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Ric,

Thank you for reviewing our HDMI to VGA Adapter Converter. We’re sorry to hear that the adapter did not work as intended for you, and we would like to offer some assistance.

As the adapter itself has no external power source, yet requires power to convert the HDMI signal to VGA, it instead draws power from the HDMI port of the connected source in order to operate. Unfortunately, as the amount of power delivered through the HDMI connector differs between devices, results can vary depending on the type of device used. For instance, smaller notebooks such as the Samsung Chromebook may not function correctly with the adapter.

In this situation, we would instead recommend an adapter that allows for external power via a DC adapter or adjacent USB port, such as the following unit: A Micro USB to USB cable is required to power this product externally; for instance a 1 ft cable can be seen on Newegg here:

We apologize again for the inconvenience. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and will be forwarded to our Product Information team for further consideration.

We're always here to help with our lifetime technical support, so if you have any further questions or concerns, please take a moment to get in touch with our support team, and kindly reference case #303-220588.

Thank You,

Customer Support

5 out of 5 eggsExplanation

Pros: Cheaper non-audio version of HD2VGAA model

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Cheaper non-audio version of HD2VGAA model which has a micro usb as well as a normal headphone jack for the audio that HDMI can transfer. Most people probably don't need this if they're converting from the modern HDMI interface to an ancient VGA interface. Usually people buy this product just to connect a laptop to a projector.
