4 out of 5 eggsStarTech DVI2VGAE DVI-D to VGA Active Converter Cable

Pros: Low cost, good results for what it does.

Cons: Does have a lower video quality than direct connection, but there is a conversion taking place with Analog output.

Other Thoughts: We used this device to solve a very specific problem for us. We are using a larger KVM system for a broadcast control room environment. The KVM is analog, but was state of the art when installed. The KVM adapters report an EDID with a maximum of 1024x768 video even though the systems documentation rates the system to support 1600x1200 signals. Some of our better servers and workstations employ high end design class graphics cards that support EDID spoofing and are able to send 1920x1080 through the KVM with no problem. The majority of systems, however do not have EDID spoofing features and lock the maximum resolution to that reported by the KVM adapters. In this case we were able to use the StarTech DVI2VGAE as an interface between the server and the KVM adapter. The DVI2VGAE reports its own EDID that allows up to 1920x1200 and allows the workstation output to be set to the desired 1920x1080. In this case we are hitting the monitor with the native resolution of the display instead of a 1024x768 resolution image that is then upscaled at the display. In our case this improved the video quality. But, directly connecting the workstation to the monitor, bypassing both the KVM and the DVI2VGAE does improve the quality of the video. This is just not possible in our situation and the DVI2VGAE ends up as the best compromise we have found to improve our display quality.

1 out of 5 eggsStarTech DVI2VGAE DVI-D to VGA

Pros: None that I am aware of.

Cons: Didn't work with either of my spare 1024x768 monitors. Used item(?)

Other Thoughts: The product arrive and I opened the package. It was obvious that this was a returned item (scratches on device). I figured I try it anyway. On both of my 1024x768 LCD monitors, the signal just flashed on and off. The device is either sending signal out of range for monitors, or it's defective. Either way, it's not working for me and will be returned.

5 out of 5 eggsGood as it gets

Pros: Works exactly as you would expect. Clear image and looks just like it did with regular vga.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Purchased a new video card (R9 290X) and it did not support DVI with analog out so went with this.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked like a charm

Pros: This little device allowed me to get my 2nd monitor back after updating to a PC that only had one VGA output.

Cons: Display quality is not quite as good as the VGA display but it may be tweakable.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Color Conversion, even with USB power, even the replacement

Pros: It looked nice and seemed reasonably well designed. I always get aggravated when I can't screw in the VGA or DVI connector, but at least this adapter didn't have that problem.

Cons: Both the 1st one I received and the replacement never converted the colors correctly. I tried using the secondary USB power with each and that didn't help either.

Other Thoughts: I have a DVI/VGA monitor, but needed everything to be on VGA for KVM so I know that my video card is outputting the correct color over VGA and that my VGA computers display correctly as well. This adapter is the obvious and disappointing point of failure. I'll try a different brand. Oddly, I have a StarTech 2 Port, 2.5 & 3.5 PATA & SATA to USB 3.0 dock that works great.
