5 out of 5 eggsExcellent, simple solution.

Pros: Normally I prefer a technological solution to be granular and have multiple options, but this item is just a simple adapter that was well thought out. So easy to use, and so universal is the interface emulation circuitry, that unless you get a damaged unit (statistically, every batch of a mass produced item will have a few damaged units, that's just a fact), you can be sure this will be dream to use.

Cons: Not so much a con, as I could have picked a unit with "IDE" connectivity, you are best advised to select a solution like this that also has a PATA connector if you aren't sure that SATA will be your exclusive use.

Other Thoughts: Technology doesn't get much simpler. I teach at the PA State Police Center for Digital Forensics and we have some of the most technologically advanced devices in existence, but this device is used by someone nearly everyday.

A note about negative reviews. This item has been produced and sold in mass, thus defective units will be produced, but consider that if the item was truly "garbage" would it still be in production? The device either does what it advertises or it fails to sell. A few reports of defective units are more than likely the user, not the equipment. Anyone who has worked in IT knows that greater than 95% of all reports of problems are actually user ignorance (see Study by Cornell University on user to device implementation of technology to confirm this claim). You simply could not sell so many of a unit if none worked, rather you get a single ignorant user who claims a problem, and provides no context or verification of their claims. Issues surrounding usability or specific use problems are one thing, but simply dismissing the entire unit as a waste means you and a few other individuals are saying that your group of maybe 200 problem users are right and that the group of non-problem users numbering perhaps 30,000 or more are wrong. In other words 30,000 people who encounter no problems and are able to use their device without difficulty are somehow delusional, and the small group who believe the item to be flawed are correct: that is simply non sequitur.

5 out of 5 eggsWow, Fast!

5 out of 5 eggsAs Advertised

Pros: Inexpensive, simple to use, works as advertised.

Cons: Cord is a bit short.

Other Thoughts: This is a very handy tool to make instant external hard drives, cloning drives etc. It worked right out of the box and is extremely simple to use.

5 out of 5 eggsDid the job!

Pros: Worked exactly as advertised. Allowed me to get files off of an old internal laptop hard drive that I had recently replaced. Hooked right up, got a ~75 GB picture library copied to my new SSD...life is good.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Seems well made for a cable. Not much more to say since it is just a cable. All I can say is that it worked without having any issues or complaints*!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for its purpose

Pros: Works for what it's intended to do. Newegg's service was fantastic, as always.

Cons: It's exactly what it says on the tin. Don't expect this to power anything more than the smallest of drives, since it is powered exclusively by usb. It might not even be able to handle some 2.5" drives. It worked fine for what I needed, but I wasn't able to use it to connect a dvd drive, and certainly not a full size desktop hard drive (that one didn't even start to spin up when I tried it just for kicks).

Other Thoughts: It seems like a fairly solid product, if all you're looking for is something quick and easy to power a 2.5" drive. I've always thought the idea of getting everything in one wire was fantastic if it was possible. However, for now, unless you pretty much exclusively use low power 2.5" drives, you're probably better off getting an adapter that has a separate power connection.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked exactly as described

Pros: Allowed me to clone my new Samsung 840 EVO SSD
It works... not really much else to say

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Not much to say, did exactly what I wanted it to do with no problems. Cloned my existing SSD to a new 840 EVO SSD relatively easily. I also used it to transfer some files from a data hdd. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to use it for similar purposes.

5 out of 5 eggsStartech USB to SATA III

Pros: Worked for me. Not something I will use allot but very nice to have. Feels very solid for the price.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Only works on smaller drives due to USB power limitations. Worked great for my application.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: One wire .. hinting at powered via USB capability

Cons: Ineffective at best. does not work on any usb with any hard drive even low wattage SSD that my old sata usb powered just fine. Don't waste your time thinking one wire .. sweet still a pipe dream for me. This is not the solution.

Other Thoughts: SIIG is my old one the hunt for me continues, after my RMA is started. I hate wasting time RMAing things i need.
