Icy Dock has taken another one of its tried and true products and taught it some new tricks! Introducing the MB881U3-1SA 2.5" & 3.5" SATA and IDE hard drive adapter with docking station functionality.

It features the new USB 3.0 interface for up to a 5 Gb/sec transfer rate but still backwards compatible to USB 2.0 transfer speeds. The MB881U3-1SA is perfect for any DIY user or IT Professional in need of a quality hard drive adapter. This adapter will work with both SATA drives and IDE drives and use them on a USB 3.0 interface. The 2.5" SATA/IDE drives can be powered with the USB cable alone. A power adapter is included for faster or bigger 2.5" hard drives or 3.5" hard drives. Using the USB 3.0 interface will maximize the IDE drives read/write speeds not found on other USB 2.0 products.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect!!

Pros: Does exactly what it says... very high quality, simultaneously connect all 3 device types to transfer information as needed and all in one small package.

Cons: If they had included a high quality bag that everything would fit into, along with an adapter cable that would allow you to plug an optical drive into the SATA connector (because the spacing of the connector from the frame does not allow enough space to plug in a 5.25" device) and then to the back of an optical drive this would be THE PERFECT product. Those adapters can be purchased separately here on newegg so it's easily overcome.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great while it works

Pros: Does exactly what it says it should straight out of the box...for a little while

Cons: After using this product for about 6-8 months, windows will not recognize drives when connected. Windows chimes to acknowledge a USB device being plugged in, but explorer and Disk management both show nothing new.

Other Thoughts: After using for less than a year I have no interest in owning another. I want a product that outlasts the warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Pretty slick little device that lets me check both SATA and IDE drives. Easy to use, didn't even have to read the instructions.

Cons: For me it's not a big deal, but no, if you have the IDE plugged in (it plugs into the side) it will not stay upright. You can't really expect it to, it's not like people regularly mount drives on their side in mid-air. Lay it down, hold it up, or get a cable.

Other Thoughts: I was on a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6 and it worked fine. Not that I expected anything different, but some people are weird and want to know these things.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the price, but not perfect.

Pros: First off, it doesn't need "the ritual" (you guys who've had the cheap ones know what I'm talking about). You can leave it plugged in and just use the power button between drives.

I read all the reviews about this thing falling over, I honestly don't know, because the first thing I did was take the base off and just laid everything down during use.

The speed seems to be as advertised, though I haven't actually clocked it.

The drives all fit flush against the unit, didn't have to fight with it.

I've used it to wipe and format five drives now after making full backups (one was a terabyte and completely full) and I haven't had a lick of trouble. :)

Cons: The only thing I have to complain about, and I'm still debating whether or not this is worth an egg.. Is the molex power cable. It's short for obvious reasons, but so short that it's a pain to bend and get plugged up.

Other Thoughts: If you get this, go ahead and get/make a four or so inch molex cable of your own. You'll understand why when you hook up your first 3.5" PATA drive.

I saw three other complaints here:

1. The colours.
2. The price.
3. It won't stand up and hold a hard drive at the same time.

Here's what you need to know about all that:

1. Does it not match your purse?
2. You get what you pay for. If you want something that actually works, you're going to have to pay the tab.
3. Who cares? Lay it down.

4 out of 5 eggsHeadache saver

Pros: Saved me a lot of hassles rebuilding 3 systems in the first week alone. I just backed everything up to a spare HDD. It also made upgrading to a bigger storage drive really easy.

Cons: The IDE connector is smaller than standard, so you have to watch that. It would be nice if it had a place to store the molex adapter other than leaving it plugged in and hanging or tossing it in a drawer.

5 out of 5 eggsZero Problems

Pros: I have used this for over 1 year since I purchased it in June of '11. I have pushed several terabytes of data through it (in and out both). I used it to perform sustained writes of 38 MB/s via USB 2 (no 3 on my computer) which ran uninterrupted and without error over the course of 3 plus hours (500 GB at 38 MB/s).

IDE and SATA both work perfectly. No faults or failure to report.

The OS used was almost exclusively Arch Linux x86_64, but I have also used it successfully with Windows XP.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I recycled the stand. It very compact when flat on the desk.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a Charm

Pros: Works as advertised so far, haven't had the opportunity to test it at USB 3.0 speed yet for data transfer, but it reads every hard drive I plug into it, even those that were told to me by professionals to be un-mountable and worthless, got everything I needed.

Cons: No product or engineering problems, I would like to be able to rest the IDE HDD's I use in an upright position as well as SATA drives, but that's not truly a design flaw or problem, just a personal preference.

Other Thoughts: It's exactly what it is advertised to be, performs like a champ. I'd recommend it to anyone looking at similar products.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to Use. Easy toS etup

Pros: Works great, is easy to setup, fast USB 3.0 interface for transferring large amounts of data quickly, supports both SATA and IDE drives, and both 2.5 and 3.5 inch sizes. I use this to troubleshoot and repair customers hard drives and it is very well suited for that task.

Cons: Colors. I do not care for the white and green color scheme.
Style. Again I would have preferred a more modest style and color.

Have to detach base to use IDE drives.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I would recommend the Icy Dock. The cons are only minor and subjective. This thing delivers where it matters most, functionality.
