1 out of 5 eggsPOC

Pros: None

Cons: We have these installed in 4 servers, and so far 2 of the 4 servers have had these catch on fire or melt when the connectors and/or wires corrode. The SATA connectors not being used show signs of corrosion inside them and when you strip the wires, they also show green corrosion in the wires. We've had to replace a few hard drives due to the damage caused by these adapters in 2 servers and are now looking for a better replacement to swap out in other servers we've used them in.

1 out of 5 eggsDestroyed a new hard drive

Pros: Lasted a year and a half before it went up in flames.

Cons: I had two hard drives connected and one of them wouldn't mount anymore, so I opened up my case and saw one of the sata power cables was half melted and half charred. When I touched it, half of it turned to ash. It melted the corner and power connector on my four month old 3TB hard drive (still had 2.5 years left on that warranty, not anymore though). It must have caught fire because the hard drive below it is shows some charring on the top of it. Is it really that hard to make something like this so it doesn't catch fire?

Other Thoughts: After meticulously picking off the melted plastic on the hard drive power connector, scraping them with a razor, and then cleaning them with alcohol, the damaged hard dive mounted. I was able to take a backup and it seems to work fine, but for how long? I cannot trust this drive now. I'm angry but glad my house didn't burn down. That would have created an awkward situation when I'm seen carrying out my backup hard drives from a burning building before my roommates.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed in less than 30 days

Pros: Functional - worked great for the first few weeks.

Cons: Left my pc on overnight, Like i sometimes so. Came down in the AM to my pc off, didn't think much of it until I pushed the power button to no response. Take the side off and take a look. The smell of melted plastic came up from the pc. Found the SATA side of this cable that was plugged into the DVD-ROM was burned. Part of the cable melted into the DVD-ROM connection, ruining it. simple 480W power supply, 2 HDDs 1 DVD-ROM. Wouldn't expect it to be overloaded.

Other Thoughts: I'd definitely say buy this at your own risk. Like many products, most of these will work as designed, I got unlucky.

1 out of 5 eggsWARNING!!

Pros: Was inexpensive

Cons: I've seen these devices appear to short out. It does not appear to be the (seagate) hard drives, as I've been able to even clean them and reuse the hard drives. I believe the devices short and melt. It is a serious issue, and I have since stopped using all Molex to SATA power converters of any type. Order better power supplies!

If you look into this issue, you will see this is a common problem with many different Molex to SATA converters. I'm unsure to the specifics (if it is related to power supplies as well, etc)... but I've not had any problems since I've quit using converters of this type.

1 out of 5 eggsThis actually caught fire.

Pros: Cheap, worked okay until it caught fire.

Cons: I bought this in January 2013, and it caught fire late in 2014. I was lucky enough to be at my computer at the time, noticed the flickering orange light, opened the front of my computer, and saw bright orange flames flowing through the space where I could have put a second optical drive. I turned the computer off at the surge protector and the fire died fast...there was a bit of smoke, and both SATA plugs of the cable were all charred and melted. Power connections on the drives were scorched too, collateral damage--haven't tried to use those drives yet.

If this thing can't safely power two SATA drives from one 4-pin power connection I really have no idea what its raison d'etre is.

1 out of 5 eggsCorrosion Warning!

Pros: Inexpensive.

Cons: Purchased two of these ~ 2 years ago. Used them as extension cables to feed power to 3TB Drive and my SSD. I just took them off to discover the little copper contact wires in the SATA connectors had eaten into both of my drives power connectors and left some white powdery oxidation. I think my SSD is ruined.

Other Thoughts: Will spend more and get higher quality connectors next time.

1 out of 5 eggsMelted

Pros: It worked for a while without melting

Cons: It melted. Thankfully, it was plugged into a DVDRW drive.
Was playing DoTA for about an hour and the fire alarms in my building started going off. "Strange...", I thought to myself. And then I noticed the smell of burning rubber. I unforutunately ate the "disconnect" penalty in my DoTA game and shut my PC off. Later after I aired out my appartment I noticed that this little guy had melted while attached to my DVDRW drive. The DVDRW drive is toast, but I'm very thankful it wasn't hooked up to a hard drive. Do yourself a big favor and stay away from this adapter.

Other Thoughts: It was totally fine before it melted, but if you care about any of the componets in your PC stay away from this product.
