A Good First Try
- Pros: It's cheap. Faster than anything VIA has to offer right now. 2 USB headers for 6 USB ports total.
- Cons: The integrated graphics system sucks horribly. No reset CMOS jumper. One ram slot, though it's no big deal.
- Other Thoughts: The SiS chipset was a horrible idea. You can't listen to music and play a Genesis game in full screen at the same time without dropped frames. Unless you will use this board as a server, get a graphics card.
best mini-itx money can buy
- Pros: Cheap and fast. I uses comparable power to the other VIA competitors and uses pretty standard chips so getting Linux on it was cake. I've owned many mini-itx mainboards, but this on really takes the cake in terms of price for performance
- Cons: As another reader indicated, getting the video to work is a little troublesome. You'll have to compile the driver otherwise you'll get a bunch of little white horizontal lines. The compiled driver works great, but you'll also need to find a proper modeline.
- Other Thoughts: My modeline: (using Olevia 532h LCD TV)

Cheap powerful Mini-ITX
- Pros: Intel added SATA controller and 64 bit processor, and no fan on the CPU. Cheapest Mini-ITX for the speed you can get.
- Cons: Even though there is no fan on the CPU, there is no way you can run this board 100% passively with the stock heatsinks (even when the board is not in a case at all). You have to have a casefan. What's worse than the CPU is the Northbridge chip, it's heasink gets too hot to touch in seconds. I could not install an OS open-board witout a some kind of fan (reset would occur).
- Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm happy. I had to add a 40mm fan to the system, which was good enough to keep everything in acceptable temperature range. The Ubuntu forum folks have got a pretty good Linux video driver compiled for it now. Windows XP Pro runs well and pretty zippy. I didn't try it, but the on-board video probably isn't good enough to run Vista with aero glass on.
