5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Up to 2 QX9775 cpu's
Up to 16gb ram
Great 'general use/use it for everything at once' board, you can use it for rendering, gaming and have 500 tabs open in firefox all at the same time(not that you should lol)

Cons: Wish it had a couple more SATA ports, and maybe one more PCI.
Other than that, None.
(I would have said price, but I got mine used for $140)

Other Thoughts: Used this as my 'build a high-end machine one piece at a time' budget build. Started with just 1 qx9775, an old nvidia card I had laying around, and some fbdimms I found really cheap on auction.(yes, it will run fine with only one processor)

Currently still only run the 1 cpu(waiting to find another $200 Buy it now on auction), got 8gb ram, and a nvidia gtx in it now, to date it has taken everything I've thrown at it, really have no reason to upgrade anything yet.

5 out of 5 eggsHackintosh CHAMP

Pros: Runs Mac OS X like a Champ... running 10.5.7 Hackintosh. I've build two already, one for work and one for friend. Dropped two Harpertowns in it... all 8 cores burning through audio processing and video rendering. A+++++. Vista and XP both x64 runs smoothly but who cares anyway.
My Mac Pro 8 core has a brother :P

Cons: Pain to get Zalman heatsinks in place; Northbridge gets in the way. Price should come down a hair. Needs more memory slots.

Other Thoughts: The Hell with Microsoft.... FREE MAC OS X for the PC market... CRIPPLE WINDOWS FOREVER WITH THIS FINAL BLOW...

4 out of 5 eggsgreat board

Pros: Great board, lots of connectors

Cons: - SLOOOOOOOOW BIOS init at boot time
- ECC RAM = slow, expensive, power-hungry, hot
- takes Xeon procs, but the heatsinks are for NON-xeon procs. Go figure. Major headache.
- Two SATA ports don't work.

Other Thoughts: Having 8 cores is pretty sweet. And 16gb RAM is even sweeter.

5 out of 5 eggsSkulltrail is an enthusiast gaming platform

Pros: Intel demonstrated Skulltrail at Intel Developer Forum Fall 2007 in San Francisco, USA, and at the Consumer Electronics Show 2008 at Las Vegas.

Skulltrail has a front side bus rate of 400 MHz (1600 MHz QDR), and was demonstrated with two 45 nanometer High-K processors running at 3.2 GHz. During IDF, a 4.0 GHz phase cooled Skulltrail system was demonstrated. Then on October 22, 2007, the two processors were demonstrated running at 4.4 GHz, water cooled. They were demonstrated again on October 31, 2007, this time running at 5.0 GHz, phase cooled. On April 18, 2008 Tom's Hardware, reporting from an Overclocking Enthusiast site, reported that an overclocked speed of 6.006 GHz was achieved on an 8-core Skulltrail setup.

Cons: Owners of Skulltrail systems can also make use of up to four ATI graphics cards using ATI CrossFireX technology,

Other Thoughts: Core 2 Extreme QX9775
Four processor cores in one processor package
3.2 GHz clock frequency
1600 MHz FSB
Fabricated on 45 nm process
12 MiB L2 cache (6 MiB per core pair)

3 out of 5 eggsboard is kinda over-rated

Pros: Just got a 3rd skulltrial. see my previous post(s)
RE: "Skulltrail is for gaming among other things"

Dual 771's
FBram ddr2 (quad channel)

I clustered 3 of these things together, makes a nice render farm. Good multi thread support.

Cons: there are 2 FSB's on the north bridge. that means 2 memory buses, each with 4 threads [quad channel memory] (8 total). No desktop card supports this, so why offer SLI or Crossfire? Even if you set it up anyway, you can't use more then 2 of the threads on 1 of the FSB's anyway.

CURRENT DESKTOP CARDS WILL ONLY USE 1 FSB, so your games will only use 1 of the CPUs. the OS will run nice.

Other Thoughts: The only real feature a gamer has is the FBram.

this board is kinda over-rated, but if used the proper way can do some serious multi threading (see my previous post).

this mobo supports ALL video cards, its the cards that DONT have support for the mobo. you have to use the right software and drivers. Unless the software you are using REQUIRES THIS your better off with a desktop mobo w/ tripple channel ram and a 1366 or 775.

Get a server mobo w 5400 N.Bridge, it's the same thing. it's not a 775 cuz this is a server chipset

1 out of 5 eggsSkulltrail just got PwnEd!!!

Pros: None that I can think of? Or should I say the name Skulltrail is a bit intimidating before you actually see the board? Well ok there is one PRO...You get to tell your friends that daddy bought you a mb that actually uses 2 cpu's

Cons: Price of course....Lackluster looks and poor performance compared to a high end LGA 1366 mb..Really dont see a need for 2 cpu's...And why didnt intel make this a 775 socket? Guess it was intended to rip-off the dumb rich

The Sli on this board is useless...

Other Thoughts: Get an EVGA x58 Classified mb and pair it up with a i7 920..Overclock the i7 to 3.4 GHZ stock voltage, then drop in a pair of EVGA 260's in SLI and you have a SKULLTRAIL CRUSHER. Ohh and not to mention the money you saved if you had bought this mobo with a pair of quad core cpu's..For now the i7 lineup is in front and dont really see the use for this overpriced generic looking mb...

Btw im gettin 245+ stable fps in Cod4. Everything maxxed out..using dual 260's in Sli w/o overclocking the cards...

Antec 1200
Corsair HX1000 PSU
EVGA x58 Classified MB
i7 920 3.4 GHz on air stable as a ROCK
Cooler Master V8
2x Evga GTX 260's in Sli (Core 216)
2x WD VR 150GB in RAID 0
1x WD Black 1TB
3x 2GB Corsair Dominator PC3 (15000)
Vista Ultimate 64

5 out of 5 eggsTHIS POST IS USEFUL

Pros: Reply to:
"Skulltrail is for gaming among other things"

Nobody is saying you can't game, it's just a waste of money. I own 2 of these, runs games fine. Hope this helps.

"Fully buffered DIMM technology allows up to 21GB/s which is 3 times the bandwidth of previous technology. up to 4MB of L2 cache can be allocated to one core."
(see Item#:N82E16819117121)

allocating resources per core is what this chipset dose. IS BEST USED FOR MULTI-TREAD OR VIRTUAL DESKTOPS.

Cons: why would anyone need PCIX on this mobo?

this mobo supports SLI and Crossfire, but I don't care how many GAMING cards you install... They will only use 1 memory bus, this mobo has 8. Each core has it's own memory bus, that's what the 5400 chipset is. Unless there is some game that supports hardware multi-treading that I don't know about... so why not buy a gaming mobo and save $400.

only certified WORKSTATION CLASS VIDEO CARDS can make full use of all 8 cores. the difference is the drivers for workstation cards are made by software vendors (although generic drivers do come with the card and can be downloaded). These drivers are made specific to a program.

Ex: when switching between 3D max and AVID, I have to swap drivers (that's why I use 2 virtual desktops, one w/ each driver loaded)

Other Thoughts: wiki is lacking a bit of info, and there is only 1 desktop 771 that new egg lists. it costs a lot of money. your trippin.

to save money check new egg "server motherboards" w/ 5400 chipset. it's the same thing w/o sli and crossfire support.

Gamer / web design - use a desktop mobo unless using multi-thread appz HEAVY.

3d / CAD / video composite - use this with WORKSTATION CLASS VIDEO CARD, most software vendors PROVIDE VIDEO DRIVERS MADE ONLY FOR THERE SOFTWARE.

video - use a server class 5400 MOBO,
your not drawing shapes so, keep in mind that rendering video puts nearly all the work on CPUs NOT GPUs! Invest more in CPU's NOT vid cards. you don't NEED SLI or Crossfire. (see above)

Audio - Use this mobo w/ recommended Hardware. This mobo has lots of PCI slots for later expansion.

5 out of 5 eggsSkulltrail is for gaming among other things

Pros: other thoughts

Cons: other thoughts

Other Thoughts: please read the wikipedia article on this board it will help you to know the correct information on this board. Then follow the links to where the information is procured from.
also note that core 2 extreme processor's are made with gaming in mind and is stated as so on intels website.

please put down your actual knowledge of hardware and not your inflated ego opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsLittle info.

Pros: Just to clarify there are 28 total processors that new egg sells that will work for this motherboard. only 1 desktop cpu, and there are 27 server cpu's that will work. they range from 200 range up to the 1500 range. But it does require 2 of them.

Cons: No real cons, just make sure you realize what all you have to buy to build a complete system

Other Thoughts: Due your research.
