The Intel S5520SC server motherboard supports up to two Dual-Core/Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 series processors at 4.8 GT/s, 5.8 GT/s, and 6.4 GT/s bus speeds via the Intel QuickPath Interconnect to unleash the parallel processing performance of Intel microarchitecture. With 12 DIMM slots, it can support up to 6-channel registered or unbuffered DDR3 800/1066/1333MHz memory to significantly improve the computing capability.

This motherboard has a full range of expansion choices: it features the next-generation PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots, providing I/O flexibility for the most demanding, high-bandwidth workstation applications; it protects your investment with one PCI Express 1.0 x4 slot, one PCI Express 1.0 x1 slot and one PCI 32/33MHz slot as flexible options for server utilization.

The server motherboard has integrated 6 SATAII 300MB/s ports plus an optional four-port SAS expansion module for versatile storage configurations. Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology through on-board SATA connectors provides SATA RAID 0, 1, and 10 with optional RAID 5 support provided by the Intel RAID Activation Key AXX4SASMOD for better data protection.

4 out of 5 eggsFYI...

Pros: 2 pci express card slots
standard pci slot
2 processors
lots of ram supported

Cons: requires a power supply that has an auxiliary power connector,
in addition to the two 8 pin and 24 pin
this is very hard to find hence i docked one egg from the rating

Other Thoughts: intel sells a case that has a 600W or 1000W power supply built in which is compatible with this board
Item#:N82E16811102030 is the 1000W

1 out of 5 eggsNot for the faint of heart

Pros: Server management features

Cons: This motherboard should not be called a "workstation" motherboard, it is really a server motherboard with workstation features (dual PCIe x16 slots). Onboard video, EFI and FRU/SDR/BMC updates do not belong on a workstation motherboard. On top of it, integration issues with a non-Intel chassis can cause severe hair loss even for experienced integrators.

Purchased this motherboard with an "Intel-tested" Chenbro SR105 chassis about two weeks ago, and to this day, have not been able to bring fan noise to manageable levels. Fans are at full speed at all time, and no BIOS settings or SDR updates have any effect on that. As is, I cannot deliver the system to a client: have to use a different motherboard because of fan noise issues.

Integration has been a huge PITA for me. If it was branded as a "server" motherboard, I may have given it five eggs, but as as a "workstation" motherboard, it's an "F" for "fail".

Other Thoughts: Great motherboard - until you try to bring down fan noise levels on a non-Intel chassis.

I've had decent luck with Intel motherboards in the past, workstation, desktop, and server - but not with this one.

3 out of 5 eggsPretty good but a bit temperamental

Pros: Reasonably priced
Good manufacturing quality

Cons: - Seems to be very particular about the RAM. I've got 24GB of Crucial CT25672BB1339 dual, and it will fail to boot about every one time in ten (giving three beeps = memory test fail).
- There's an on-board basic graphics chip, which is turned on by default. Although technically any pcie GPU plugged in should work in "slave" mode until you change the settings in the BIOS, my 4870X2 didn't like that one bit. This creates an unpleasant chicken and egg situation where you need to turn off onboard video but you can't see what you're doing!
- It's a bit of a squeeze getting a long video card plugged in as there's a chip on the board which hampers you a little

Other Thoughts: If I were to do this again, I'd definately try a different board. It's OK but feels a bit of an "early" 1366 effort.

3 out of 5 eggsBuyer Be Aware

Pros: Super fast board, supports the 5520 Quad Core Processors.

Cons: The Specs indicated onbard video, what they really mean is we will sell you a video cable to plug in, it doesnt come with the board. What kind of moron would spec a board and advertise it with on board video, then say they will sell you the cable? Also, this board requires two 12v connectors for the CPUs, this isn't a problem except that the connectors are one foot apart and most power supplies do not offer that much cable.

1 out of 5 eggsworked for one day

Pros: Nice layout and features if it works. EFI board

Cons: Worked for one day. Then start beeping, won't boot.
Returned and got ASUS Z8NA-D6C, couldn't be happier.

Will stay away from Intel. Never had any luck with intel boards. Two server boards bought two years ago were dead after six months, this time just lasted for one day.

Other Thoughts: If you don't use 130W xeons and overclocking, get Z8NA-D6C.

5 out of 5 eggsInsane Speed

Pros: Dual Socket Nehalem board with support SAS Support (Via Module), 2xPCIe 2.0, 12xDDR3 DIMM's, RAID. Intelligent overclocking with the "Turbo Boost" (finally Intel has gotten with the program and is actually incorporating Overclocking into their boards like everyone else has been for years).

Cons: Two 8-pin stingers needed to power both CPU's.
Must get RAID 5 activation key if you want to use R5
Only 6 SATA Ports
Documentation on using the memory in triple channel was non-existent. After speaking with Intel we discovered that independent IS TC.

Other Thoughts: We built two workstations with middle of the road CPU's and two 250GB ES drives and it was still, by FAR, the fastest rendering box we, or the clients, have ever used. I wish they would've popped for the SSD's and W5580's for benching purposes, but nonetheless, what we did for ~$2,500 was nothing short of incredible.
