UPDATe to "There are better boards than this one"
- Pros: Please see my first review of this board. An added "Pro" is the CMOS clear switch on the rear panel of the case. Unfortunately, it does not always completely clear the CMOS of all previous settings. If that happens to you, disconnect all power, open the case, remove the battery and move the cmos jumper the "clear settings" pins. Then reverse the sets to restart.
- Cons: An addtional "Con" is that the Abit IP35V I have will only run my ATA 100 hard drives at ATA 33 speeds. That's with only ATA100 hard drives on the single IDE header. That's with no Optical drives attached to slow them down. They simply run slow at ATA33 speeds as per Sisoft Sandra and Lavalys Everest. Nothing I've found will correct that. The same hard drives run just fine at ATA100 speeds off the IDE headers on other P35 boards. The board continues to lose USB and USB 2.0 functions on a daily basis. It's a multi-hour chore to get it back.
- Other Thoughts: The problems reported for the IP35V occur for me with bioses version 10 and 12. A simple bios flash or reflash won't cure some of the problems that can be eventually corrected - for a short time, anyway. And some problems, like the slow ATA33 hard drive speeds can't be corrected at all (not that I've yet to discover how to, in any event).
BTW, I'm not an Abit critic by any means. I loved my NF7-S2 and have had no problems at all with my Abit AG8 915 mobo. This IP35V was purchased to upgrade the 915 board, but it has not worked out well at all. The currently lower priced, but higher rated IP35E might be a better choice while it's still on sale. Or look elsewhere for a better "Value" board that works more dependably. :>(
There are better boards than this one
- Pros: It says it is made by Abit. The two onboard LED power-on lights are a nice feature. It's a P35 board and priced right.
The IDE header is conveniently located near the 24 pin power header.
- Cons: The "V" might lead you to think it is a "Value" board. In actually it may not be. The construction of the board looks cheap. The board lacks Parallel, Serial, Fire-wire, and raid. The southbridge chipset is unsinked and is only a version 7 as opposed to verison 9 on most other P35 boards. The board wouldn't stay stable or hold it's bios settings. It lost USB 2.0 functionality after a crash and can't seem to get it back even after a reinstall of the OS, drivers, and reflashing the bios. It has some overclocking features, but in my opinion is not reliable enough to make a good overclocking board. It's finicky and erratic.
- Other Thoughts: I got the board used from someone who bought it from Newegg. The loss of USB 2.0, the lack of stability, and unreliability are my main complaints about board. Bottom line is, in my opinion, there are much better choices and much better boards in this price range. All components used to test the IP35V are known good and work fine on other P35 boards. That includes the video card, ram, cpu and power supply. The heatsink was a good after-market model and properly seated with AS-5 properly applied.
- Pros: solid beginner board running a q6600 managed to get stable oc of 3.05 GHz on stock cooling with temps running well under spec at load. some of that is due to the 5 case fans but still great for a sub $100 board. bios reset is a big plus when overclocking, no more messing around with jumpers
- Cons: no firewire or optical audio out (i run my sound through my home stereo/surround) ide and floppy connectors hard to get to but i got a sata dvd burner so not that big a deal
- Other Thoughts: i've built systems with both this and the ip35E and would reccommend both.... running a triple boot on this one with ubunto xp 32 and 64
