Take your system building over the edge with the GA-EP45-Extreme from Gigabyte. This board has been designed to take advantage of the features in the 45nm Intel processors. The board has dynamic 6 gear power switching. As your system needs more power, it gets it, and when the power load goes down, so does the supplied power. This lets you have power when you need it, and save energy and money when you don't.
The board uses a hybrid silent-pipe system to keep the components cool. This mixture of air and water cooling effectively removes heat from the North- and South-bridges and the CPU area. This lets you tweak the system for maximum performance. To make sure there are no problems there are LED sets for over-voltage, temperature and over-clock levels.
You can get data on and off the system speedily and securely. The 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports can team together and give you twice the bandwidth. An Ultra-TPM module keeps your data secure with a 2048 bit encryption algorithm.

- Pros: water block works well, lots of niceties like the snap-snug sata cables and the external molex plug. lots of options in the bios for overclocking. updating bios wasn't much trouble. for the most part everything works. there's a "clear cmos" button in the back but also reset and power buttons right on the motherboard in case you're working with your case open.
- Cons: ubuntu 8.04 would not recognize any of the sata drives. neither fedora 9 nor suse 11 had this problem. however, nvidia binary blob drivers would cause a black screen of death when booting. very frustrating. fortunately, updating to the latest bios (F6A) fixed that issue at least. I haven't gone back to test if the bios update allows ubuntu to detect disks now. if you look at the bios update descriptions, you don't see anything that would indicate they'd fix such an issue. so if you're having a funky issues, you probably want to update the bios.
- Other Thoughts: haven't messed with windows on this board only linux. video card giving trouble was 8800gts 512 g92. obfuscated "nv" driver did not have issue.
Very good board
- Pros: It's very sharp looking - lots of polished copper. Lots of tuning and tweaking options in the BIOS. Very stable at this point, even severely over-clocked. Optional add-on "Hybrid Heatsink" is done right: does not block or interfere with any of the ports or RAM slots. This board just worked fine for me right out of the box -- which is getting to be too rare with MB's based on the newer chipsets.
- Cons: For my 7B-Plus Lian-Li chassis, the board does not have the best possible layout, but none of the Gigabyte boards I've used in a 7B-Plus chassis are a perfect or even a good match.
Biggest drawback I encountered was only three system fan connections.
- Other Thoughts: Using an 8800 GTS video card with this, the card cramps the Lian-li's HDD cage, jamming the SATA connections into too small a space (and SATA connectors are too fragile to be this cramped). The front panel sound connector is, again, too far to the back of the MB for the case, as is the 1394 connector. None of these should be any issue with a different case (or a single-slot video card) so they do not rate removing a star. Be aware of the space/layout considerations and you'll be very pleased with this MB. Would recommend and would buy this board again.

Gigabyte
- Pros: Unique design
- Cons: Normal POOR Gigabyte quality, I was using this board with 8 gb of DDR2 as a UNIX server. First the Fire Wire died, then random crashes...Which are Unheard of in UNIX.
First I changed the PSU, RAM, and Video Card. The same problem existed. I then took all the old components, and installed them on an Abit P35 Extreme board (2 years old), and the has been faultless for weeks now. Gigabyte 20 years ago was top shelf, now the are third world to me. I wouldn't give one to an enemy!
- Other Thoughts: I was talked in to this board by EFI-X, NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A GIGABYTE. Asus, Abit, even ECS, perform better then Gigabyte.
ALSO, Gigabyte will not answer there tech support line......And getting an RMA Is a true nightmare!
What a junk motherboard
- Pros: Excellent Design
- Cons: Doesnt work, Even the simplest Overclock causes the Board to fail to boot, and thats AFTER updating to the newest F8 bio's, and the CPU you ask? a lowly E2140 i use for testing motherboard's
- Other Thoughts: Stay away.. I really dont know what gigabyte did but this is no where near a overclocker motheboard, my Gigabyte 35-DS3L Took that same E2140 to 400 FSB without a problem, the EP45 EXTREME, Fails to boot everytime... it even failed to boot when i put all the setting to AUTO WTH!? needless to say this board going back..
Was great while it lasted
- Pros: A lot of options, Heat sink is huge, Clear CMOS on the back
- Cons: Heat Sink is hard to install if you have a CPU cooler installed, Visa Versa on installing the CPU Cooler. SATA location is terrible.
My board was installed and all set up when it died and I could not restart the system.
- Other Thoughts: Doing a little bit of research, it seems like a short on the board when I plugged a firewire device into the system. I RMA'd the board and I am waiting on the new board. I hope this was a bad MOBO and not a bigger issue. I'm a little weary of using a firewire device on it now.
