Take your system building over the edge with the GA-EP45-Extreme from Gigabyte. This board has been designed to take advantage of the features in the 45nm Intel processors. The board has dynamic 6 gear power switching. As your system needs more power, it gets it, and when the power load goes down, so does the supplied power. This lets you have power when you need it, and save energy and money when you don't.
The board uses a hybrid silent-pipe system to keep the components cool. This mixture of air and water cooling effectively removes heat from the North- and South-bridges and the CPU area. This lets you tweak the system for maximum performance. To make sure there are no problems there are LED sets for over-voltage, temperature and over-clock levels.
You can get data on and off the system speedily and securely. The 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports can team together and give you twice the bandwidth. An Ultra-TPM module keeps your data secure with a 2048 bit encryption algorithm.

Surely not impressed.
- Pros: Board does well with over clocking. Huge heat sink is set up for water cooling on the North Bridge. Board runs cool. Nice features for the overclocker in bios.
- Cons: The upright Sata ports and PCI slots are poorly laid out. It should be no surprise when using a gaming board the video cards are much larger then they use to be. MOB manufactures should adjust the boards layout for this.
My video card covers two of the sata ports and because of there upright layout one cannot use a 90 degree plug to over come this. The video card also blocks one of the pci slots. The heat sink supplied with the board used for the north bridge cooling covers the pci xpress 1 slot and renders that completely useless. Two slots and two ports are a totally useless. I pay for these. Then to make matters worse, one of the Lan ports failed after two months.
- Other Thoughts: This is a fairly expensive board, Gigabyte and all other MOB manufactures should give some serious thought on where and how to place the slots where they can be used. They may also want to consider using quality parts that do not fail within two months time.
Sad fact is, I left Asus after their quality went down hill, only to find Gigabyte is just as bad. Seems no matter what you spend you still can't get a quality product. I will call Gigabyte come Monday and hopefully they will cross credit ship another board.
Bad layout
- Pros: Great motherboard for the average user. Has nice LED indicator to inform the user about the temperature and voltage. Ran stable with little overclocking. The water block is good for anyone using watercooling but you can only use 3\8 hoses with it.
- Cons: The motherboard didn't allow me to overclock my e6400 over 2.4 ghz, but I think my motherboard was defective. If anyone plans to get a long graphics card such as the 4870x2 or the 280 GTX, you might need to find another motherboard because the graphics card will block 4 sata ports. PCI-E runs at 8x8 if running crossfire mode which will reduce performance.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, Gigabyte makes great motherboard, this one just has bad layout.

Gigabyte
- Pros: Unique design
- Cons: Normal POOR Gigabyte quality, I was using this board with 8 gb of DDR2 as a UNIX server. First the Fire Wire died, then random crashes...Which are Unheard of in UNIX.
First I changed the PSU, RAM, and Video Card. The same problem existed. I then took all the old components, and installed them on an Abit P35 Extreme board (2 years old), and the has been faultless for weeks now. Gigabyte 20 years ago was top shelf, now the are third world to me. I wouldn't give one to an enemy!
- Other Thoughts: I was talked in to this board by EFI-X, NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A GIGABYTE. Asus, Abit, even ECS, perform better then Gigabyte.
ALSO, Gigabyte will not answer there tech support line......And getting an RMA Is a true nightmare!
What a junk motherboard
- Pros: Excellent Design
- Cons: Doesnt work, Even the simplest Overclock causes the Board to fail to boot, and thats AFTER updating to the newest F8 bio's, and the CPU you ask? a lowly E2140 i use for testing motherboard's
- Other Thoughts: Stay away.. I really dont know what gigabyte did but this is no where near a overclocker motheboard, my Gigabyte 35-DS3L Took that same E2140 to 400 FSB without a problem, the EP45 EXTREME, Fails to boot everytime... it even failed to boot when i put all the setting to AUTO WTH!? needless to say this board going back..
Was great while it lasted
- Pros: A lot of options, Heat sink is huge, Clear CMOS on the back
- Cons: Heat Sink is hard to install if you have a CPU cooler installed, Visa Versa on installing the CPU Cooler. SATA location is terrible.
My board was installed and all set up when it died and I could not restart the system.
- Other Thoughts: Doing a little bit of research, it seems like a short on the board when I plugged a firewire device into the system. I RMA'd the board and I am waiting on the new board. I hope this was a bad MOBO and not a bigger issue. I'm a little weary of using a firewire device on it now.
