Buggy bios, bad memory sockets
- Pros: * 2 ounce copper. Nice and heavy board.
* Includes legacy ports (floppy, COM1, parallel) for those that still need it (such as embedded programming). But, doesn't include the legacy cables.
* Better slot layout than most boards. Able to install two double-wide video cards and still have access to at least one PCI Express x1 (short slot) and PCI slot.
- Cons: * BIOS that shipped with it did not work correctly with a USB keyboard. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes random characters would spew forth.
* BIOS update fixed the keyboard issue. But, oddly, using the Windows/Internet bios software (@BIOS) didn't grab the latest bios. It said it was installing F4, but actually installed F3. Installing the bios from a downloaded file worked.
* One of the Gigabyte programs (Easy Tune 6) wouldn't run when I clicked on it. Google search revealed others with same problem.
* The big problem (and the reason for returning it) was that one of the second pair of memory slots was intermittently faulty. It started with BSOD. Then, I used MemTest86+ and got errors within a couple of hours. With only a single pair (4 GB), from either pair of memory DIMMs, worked fine. (Memory worked perfectly in the replacement ASUS board). Mushkin was great at offering suggestions. Gigabyte took days to get back to me with a short reply.
- Other Thoughts: Repeated insertions and removals eventually made the memory errors go away. Sometimes connector contacts need to be exercised a little bit for optimal seating. And, yes, I'm sure the memory was fully inserted the first 10 tries.
Although I really wanted to keep this board for its legacy features, I just couldn't trust that the memory slot issues wouldn't return after warranty ran out.
could us a tilt
- Pros: nice monitor looks good.
- Cons: it would be nice if you could tilt the adjust the angle of the monitor.
AWESOME BOARD
- Pros: Outstanding Motherboard- I love Newegg and buy from them often. I bought this motherboard elsewhere because I had to have it the same day. If you are assembling your own computer look no further. The Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P is just awesome. I purchased an Intel i5 processor to go with it. This motherboard has firewire, eSata, a slew of usb and sata ports.
- Cons: I can't think of any.
- Other Thoughts: After installing Windows 7 and some games I hooked my external drive to the eSata port (BTW theres ports on the front top and rear) and used Acronis to back up my system. It took about 5 minutes to back it up. I wiped the drive and restored in about the same time. The machine boots fine. LIFE IS GOOD!
