5 out of 5 eggsWork Horse

Pros: Still going strong after 1 year 8months and 7 days running 24/7. Yet to find anything that it cant do well. plenty of USB, SATA, Memory slots, has more Bios options then I will ever use. Dual bios! recovers from a bad flash without having to press, plug in, hold anything.

Cons: It's not new anymore. They don't sell it anymore. Someday it will not work anymore.

Other Thoughts: I am sure knowing what I am doing has a lot to do with my success but 14,000 hours of run time with only minor issues(not from the product) has to be a record of some sort. This thing just rocks as does the Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield and the 8 Gigs of G.SKILL DDR3 1600 and 4 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda's running in Raid 0

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Durable,
Cool,
Blue color,
Great back panel with now stupid printer ports or com ports
overclocks easy.

Cons: was not compatible with my corsair ddr3 1800mhz ram

Other Thoughts: This is an update to what i said earlier.

INSTALL the utilities for the motherboard. Open up the "smart6" utility and enable quickboot.

Only do this after you made sure its running like you want.

In my earlier review i posted that this motherboard boots really slowly and wakes from boot slowly too.

this "quickboot" does what it should. Login page loads within 30 seconds. very nice...

odd that video shows up last and much later than expected, either way it loads faster than i thought it would.

3 out of 5 eggsStarting to annoy me

Pros: Lots of features,
durable board
pretty good OC features
Nice MOFSET cooling.

I absolutely love the rear panel layout and how there is no integrated video. No pointless printer port or com ports that no one uses anymore.

fun to play with the "face wizard" utility... made my image win95 loading screen :)

easy to update bios

came with a cool gigabyte badge

Cons: The biggest con I have with this board is that it does not support my Corsair Dominator RAM. Mine is ddr3 1800 at cl7.

I can "overclock" to make it to specs but then my cpu overheats and its all unstable.

What tops that is when i unplugged the computer to change one of the side fans, when i plugged everything back in the pc would freeze at windows loading screen. Since i rearranged my usb cables it wanted to reinstall all the drivers... weird. anyways it took 3 restarts after a simple fan swap to get it to run stable again. what a rip.

Another major drawback is that it seems way slower waking up from a sleep state as well as simply booting up the first time. Not just "booting" but windows reacts slower and loads slower than my ecs dual core setup with ddr2.

I would think spending the extra money and upgrading to quad core things would boot faster.

Other Thoughts: My build.

Cooler Master CM690
Gigabyte GA-p55 (updated bios)
Intel core i5 750 quad core cpu @ 2.66
Corsair Dominator ddr3 Ram (4x1gb) @ DDR3 1333 cl7
EVGA 9800gt 512mb ddr3 gfx card
Roswill 600w PSU
1500 gb total hdd space (various size disks)
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit ... i know... too lazy to reinstall

3 out of 5 eggsDecent board but TERRIBLE Customer Service

Pros: Board has a ton of USB ports and a fair amount of SATA ports. Decent price for what you get. Built in RAID controller - see below for more info though!

Cons: Gigabyte customer service is absolutely terrible! My RAID 10 failed within a month of having the board. After several new HDDs, I finally RMA's the board. 2 weeks later it is returned. No documentation on the problem, fix, etc. I called gigabyte and the CS rep said "they found the problem and fixed it" When I asked to speak to a tech, I learned they never did isolate the problem. After a 2 failed RAID array and much research, I learned that the Intel raid controller was the likely cause. Since upgrading, the array has been stable. Gigabyte's response to my various inquiries was to build in RAID 0, then 1 then 5 to see if I could avoid the failure. What a joke!

The product documentation is deplorable. Screenshots are out of date and settings explanations are vague. Good luck with anything more than a basic install.

No firewire ports

Other Thoughts: Don't rely on Gigabyte to be truthful or helpful. I actually argued with the tech that wanted me to build various RAID configs. She consistently interrupted me and was rude.

5 out of 5 eggsFine mobo

Pros: Fast and stable board. Plenty sata and usb connectors. Extra cool SB. Easy set up. Sinks on VRMs. OC software work well.

Cons: Slow coming out of sleep. (about 20 secs)

Other Thoughts: After reading other reviews, I flashed to F-4 before I did anything. I used win 7 drivers for audio and lan. No problems to report. Shouda waited for A version.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfection

Pros: The perfect motherboard for building a great gaming platform. Enough slots for expansion and memory. Multiple safety measures in place to make BIOS flashing simple and easy. Very sturdy, the PCB is very tough! When it says 2oz copper, it actually means it, this board doesn't bend at all, even when pushing in memory and coolers. Boots quick, with plenty of options in the BIOS to setup things like you like. Boots from any medium you can think of, with a boot selection menu that works with all of them. No trouble at all. Comes with an actual manual, complete with technical specs and diagrams, not just "how to setup" nonsense.

Cons: Ships with a lame version F2 BIOS that guffs up Win7 install and hangs on the performance evaluation. Easy and safe to flash up to version F4 using @BIOS from within Windows, took less than a minute and all was well. Memory slots are kind of close to the CPU socket, so if you use a huge cooler you might have trouble fitting it in there. Included CD has drivers that are way out of date. Make sure you put your memory in the white slots if you only have one pair. Read the manual.

Other Thoughts: The cool-blue color scheme is nice, and goes well with subtle blue LEDs.

2 out of 5 eggsTotal Junk.

Pros: The box is colorful and shiny. Gigabyte really knows how to present and market their products. I was suckered in to the hype.

Cons: Wow, where to begin. Ok, I purchased this as a combo with an Intel I7 860 CPU. First, after plugging in my USB keyboard and mouse, I quickly found out that the BIOS revision shipped with the motherboard had bugs with USB keyboard support. I checked the support website and found the BIOS was 3 revisions out. After flashing the BIOS, the system boots and works, but there are issues that have popped up that have been very annoying:

- The system freezes and audio stutters once in a while, then continues like nothing ever happened.
- The audio connection wizard pops up for no reason and prompts you to verify that you plugged/unplugged an audio device when you did neither.
- Freezes, black/grey screen crashes with ATI video cards (used ATI 5850).
- Network speed is inconsistent and pauses/freezes during transfers.
- SLOW! My older Q6600 based system was faster/snappier.
- BIOS crashed several times and was 'recovered' back to the old version, which means I had to re-flash the BIOS!

Other Thoughts: The last Gigabyte motherboard I purchased turned out to have nothing but problems. BIOS problems, random crashes, slow response - all of which apply to this motherboard, meaning not much has changed with Gigabyte.

Also, the USB port has problems with disconnecting to my Sony MP3 player. Every other system I own has no problems with USB drives and MP3 players except this Gigabyte motherboard.

Overall, I took a chance with Gigabyte and I learned once again why I was avoiding them all this time.

Gigabyte P55-UD3R, Intel I7 860 CPU, A-Data 4x2GB DDR3 1600, Saphire 5850, WD 300GB Velociraptor HD, WD 2x2TB HD's, Coolermaster Stacker 830, LG WH08LS20, Windows 7 64bit.

4 out of 5 eggsGood motherboard

Pros: Well built motherboard, good clear setup instructions.

Cons: BIOS defaulted SATA ports to IDE mode. After I installed Windows 7 I learned that I should have made a driver disk and changed the mode to AHCI or RAID. It was pretty easy to fix however, so this isn't a huge con in my book.

Other Thoughts: This motherboard has worked superbly since I first powered it on. A very solid choice.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: All the bells and whistles that I needed plus more. Was able to flash bios to latest version with no issues.

Cons: Only One IDE slot, I had to upgrade some old components anyway, but if you aren't ready to do so look for a different board

Other Thoughts: Great board, great service
