Board beeps like crazy until you install memory in "white" slots
- Pros: Solid construction; plenty of USB and SATA ports; easy installation of CPU and heatsink; generous supply of SATA cables; compatible with 4-pin CPU power plugs (i.e. don't need a power supply with the 8-pin EPS plug); install guide is very good.
- Cons: As other reviewers have already said, if you don't install any memory OR if you install memory in the blue slots instead of the white ones, the speaker will beep rapidly when you power up. I was convinced I had a bum board until I read other reviews that described this -- thanks guys!
- Other Thoughts: Gigabyte seems to make some pretty rock-solid boards. I caution against using their Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) feature, however, because I've had other Gigabyte systems get in an almost unrecoverable situation, where the POST fails to boot the OS because it "thinks" DES is not properly enabled. The only way I was able to resolve was by flashing the BIOS. Aside from this annoyance, these seem to be very good boards.
Great Board, Solid, except for Front USB
- Pros: Solid built and very reliable P55 Motherboard. Plenty of Rear USB ports. Works great with G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD, DDR3-2000, PC3-16000. Extra x4 PCIe slot properly supports 3ware 9650SE RAID card.
- Cons: Front USB ports have compatability problems with some devices. Only ONE PS/2 port, problematic for those of us using PS/2 KVM's.
- Other Thoughts: This is an excellent board, though there are just a couple of minor issues with USB and PS/2.
Trouble-free and easy Windows 7 X64 install
- Pros: Windows 7 X64 and all system hardware installed without any issues whatsoever. The board has performed flawlessly.
- Cons: Absolutely none. Actually every device (except the video card) had a working driver installed at the end of the Windows install. (Microsoft is really the company to credit for this as they obviously have a great number of current drivers built-in to Seven) Only had to download and install the latest drivers after the install completed from the Gigabyte website.
- Other Thoughts: Paired this board with the Core I5 750, GSkill F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK 2 X 2GB sticks, (2) Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB in RAID 0 config and a 3rd for data and automated image backup, Antec earthwatts EA500 500W, a Sony Optiarc DVD writer (Model AD-7240S-0B), SAPPHIRE 100253HDMI Radeon HD 4650 (this PC will not be used for gaming) and an Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower.
This was by far my nicest and easiet build ever! For barely over $1000, including the Windows 7 X64 Pro software , and a couple hours work I assembled a very fast and quiet PC that did not break the bank. I would recommend a more robust video card for the serious gamer.
Thanks Newegg for carrying all the quality parts needed for a great PC builds!
