5 out of 5 eggsFirst Gigabyte Board

Pros: - Beautiful black, blue and grey color scheme
- 4 fan headers in easy to reach spots
- UEFI for booting from 2TB+ GPT hdds and secure boot support
- 8xSATA 6Gbps ports (the two grey ones are a separate pair for RAID 0 or 1 but are still 6Gbps)
- 4xUSB 3.0 (2 front, 2 back)
- true crossfire/sli for 2 x16 PCI express
- Gigabit NIC, eSATA, S/PDIF, 1xPS2 port

Cons: It would be nice if all the USB ports were USB 3.0. Also a coaxial digital audio connector in addition to the S/PDIF would be nice.

Early revisions of this board had serious firmware issues which were fixed by Gigabyte with updates available on their website. As long as you have revision 3.0 or later you don't have to worry about this though. I purchased mid 2013 and got a revision 3.0 board.

Other Thoughts: It has been running great for over a year. Three year warranty is nice in case anything happens. I am running a Phenom II x4 965 with a minor overclock. I will upgrade to an 8320 or better when their prices come down.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but won't be keeping it.

Pros: Easy to work with and configure. Using all 8 Sata ports. Love the looks of the gigabytes 990fxa series boards.

Cons: Unfortunately, I cannot fit both of my Asus ROG Mars 760x2 cards into the full 16 pin slots due to the size of the cards and the position of the 16 pin slots. One is currently running on the second to last slot, which is only 4 pin active. Cannot fit into the bottom 8 pin either due to the case connections on the bottom of the board. Also, the north bridge blocks the use of the top 4 pin slot, which I was gonna use for a Sata hot swap card, but the card is just slightly to long and won't clear the NB. I am currently running six drives and 2 case esata ports and may add a few more drives in the future so I need 8 sata ports and room for a sata expansion card.

So altogether, if you are going for dual, or 3-way sli/crossfire, and can work with, or without, the positioning of the top 4 pin PCIe slot, great board for you to go with. Remember that for 3 cards, you will probably have to use the 4 pin or find a way to work around the case connection points on the bottom if you wanna use the 8 pin. Quad sli did work but had to wedge the cards apart slightly. No damage was done. Would have give 5 if not for the NB/4 pin slot spacing issue. The graphics card issue is my fault for lack of research, not gigabytes.

Other Thoughts: Gonna have to get a different board that meets my expansion needs. Will either go with the UD3, or more likely the Asus M5A99FX Pro as it has 7 Sata ports. Can use the bottom PCIe slot on the Asus or the top on the UD3, due to the smaller NB, for my sata expansion card.

Sucks either way as i will be downgrading slightly, losing 2 usb 3.0 ports and 1 esata on the back. A shame really, as I like the boards appearance. If the heat sink fans on the cards were slightly smaller then I could make it work, although due to the dual gpu setup in each card the heat was a little high during sli. Would have to wedge something between them to keep the top cards fans from grinding against the bottom of the second card. When I bought the board, I was undecided on graphics cards, due to how fast cards go out of circulation, and how fxing expensive they are. Next time I will have to buy the cards first: Which will mean waiting longer before performing the build. This time my old rig was on the downhill so this build was a bit rushed, but all around better than my last, was also my 1st, build.

3 out of 5 eggsWell... The second one worked...

Pros: After an RMA (first board bios died 29 days after use) The second one seems to function. (2 years)

When it wants to work without any hiccups it's been a great board.

That's all I have to say for pros.

Cons: Cheap board (not talking about price), rear USB I/O is shady, doesn't seem to want to work half the time. USB devices like to just stop working, causing a hard reboot to fix the issue, happens quite often and I've tried many different things to attempt a fix.

Other Thoughts: Overall it works when it wants too but I know I will never be buying another Gigabyte product, this experience has been enough for me to give up on them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with AMD 9590

Pros: Paired this MOBO with the AMD 9590, 16GB (8x2) of 1866 Crucial Ballistix Elite RAM, and the XFX R9 280A-TDBD video card.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I'm currently running Windows 7 so I preloaded all required drivers for this new set up on a USB drive. I simply plugged in the USB drive and hit the power switch. About two minutes later all required drivers had been located and loaded for W7.

Do ensure you update this MOBO to the latest BOIS/Firmware which is FCF.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't live up to it's potential

Pros: I've used their motherboards before and have had good luck with them.

Cons: Position of the 3rd PCIe slot is too close to the connections at the bottom of the board. I attempted to seat 3 GTX 780s on this board only to find that the 3rd graphic card was actually pushing the plug of the F-USB3.0 out of it's socket with the fan. I could also see that the plugs for the power, led, etc on the lower left corner would have been sucked up into the fan if I had turn this thing on. I guess if you have single slot cards then it would work but dual slots GPUs don't bother. They needed to add a little more room to the bottom to make sure the connections don't get sucked up into the cards.

Other Thoughts: I had high hopes for this card. I bought this to replace a UD-7 that bit the dust. Next time I'll go with another's MoBo to make sure that there is room for my cards. Still a good MotherBoard but disappointed the design.

4 out of 5 eggsBIOS, beware

Pros: Great board

Cons: New processor BIOS UPDATE procedure lack of instruction

Other Thoughts: When you get a board that came out before the latest processor if you must update BIOS to run that new processor you have to do the update with an older processor that the current BIOS RECOGNIZES then you can install the new processor.
When the FX-8150 came along I had to use a cheap 30 dollar dual core to do the update for the rev.1. but I ALSO GOT A REV.3 for the FX-9590 and you still have to do the same thing. lucky for me I had done it before but GIGABYTE you may want to let folks know up front and save yourself a few RMAs.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: ?

Cons: DOA, a few months ago I ordered an Asrock 990FX Extreme3. 2 DOAs later I got a refund and got an ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0. It worked like a charm. This time I ordered a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5. It arrived DOA. I got a refund and bought an ASUS 990FXA R2.0 Sabertooth. Works like a charm.

1 out of 5 eggsGigabyte support

Pros: Nice while it lasted.

Cons: Board is bad, sent back to Gigabyte for review. All they said on the RMA was tested and no problems found. Got it back and it still has the exact same issue. Bios will not even load.I don't know how they "tested" it, but obviously not thorough enough. All brand new hardware in the PC. All from NEWEGG by the way. VERY VERY disappointed in Gigabyte support. this is the 5th Gigabyte board I've owned and always had great experience. Very disappointing that the first time I've had an issue with one they seemed lackluster in their responses. What would it cost a multi-million dollar company to just replace my board for people who live paycheck to paycheck and pay 200 dollars for a supposedly great board to get passed over and what feels like completely ignored. In the end the easiest way to see that it IS the board and NOT one of my other brand new components. I replaced this UD5 with a brand new UD3 from newegg, also gigabyte with the same chipset and everything is working flawlessly. VERY VERY disappointed that Gigabyte was so poor in helping me out with a 32 day old motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Darn shame. love gigabyte boards but this unhelpful experience has really soured me on a company that I have been dealing with for years.
