5 out of 5 eggsGreat board from Gigabyte once again

Pros: I've owned this board for roughly 4 months now and I have not had one single issue. I read others reviews and I have to say I feel for you guys as I have been building custom pc's since the 80286 days and seen my fair share of problematic boards. However, I happened to get a good one that has given me zero issues so far. I push this board constantly as I run a compiler in Linux to build android apps and roms and never even a hiccup. I use Windows 8.1 pro to play games and never a crash or BSOD. I run an FX9590 with 16gb of ram and 2 GeForce GTX780's in SLI. I have the proc OC'd to 5.5ghz on water using the Corsair H100i. This board never gets hot and I can over clock until I'm blue in the face and never had an issue. I'm not saying it will continue this way as motherboards can die in the blink of an eye. But so far so good. For the money this is a great board. Plenty of SATA ports and alot of options in Bios to get your oc fix on if you so desire. This is by far one of the best 990fx motherboards out there. I only wish I'd have gotten the updated UD7 instead. So for the money you get a great board with a lot of customizability. I'd buy another if the price was right..

Cons: None.

Pros: Great board arrived quickly and no issues so far. Paired with an FX-8350 in a Thor V2 for tons of room.

Cons: None as of yet.

2 out of 5 eggsStressful motherboard

Pros: Has all the right specs, especially for the price.
Board appears robust with the nice NB cooler.
Attractive looking board.

Cons: First board was constant "BSOD" (in this case, Black Screen of Death).

Did some research and found that it has some serious NB cooling issues (despite impressive looking cooler), which likely caused the BSOD on the first board...RMA'd it.

Second board scared me that it was having a meltdown crisis too, because software was alarming "DANGER! DANGER!" as soon as Windows booted to desktop. Turns out it wasn't happy that one of the fan ports it was monitoring didn't have a fan plugged in.

Also quite a few folks have issues with the PCIe x16 slots needing to be massaged in different ways to get GPU's to work, also resulted in BSOD issues according to more than a few forums I found.

Probably the most confusing BIOS I've navigated.

Other Thoughts: Now that the drama is over, and the board has been able to run for a few days, I decided to give this review. It's been running great since I got through the install nightmare(s). It put a mild OC on the 6-core CPU without any prompting from me (I guess that's a Pro? Not sure). Stock 3.9GHz jumped to 4.1Ghz. Stable, and cool. I only have one GTX670 on it for now, and stock RAM timing, so I'm not exactly stressing it, but I will be shortly.

If anything else happens as I start to milk it I will update review.

1 out of 5 eggsRe review

Pros: Allows for 2 video cards to be run at 16x on the PCI-E slots, has usb 3

Cons: Motherboard crapped out on me after 6 months, started throttling my CPU and running extremely hot, the Northbridge heatsink gets so hot that I burned my finger on it! I sent the motherboard in for RMA, Gigabyte had the board for 3 weeks, and just sent it back, only looked like they cleaned it up a little bit then packed it back up. Got the board back and guess what CPU is being throttled back and the Northbridge heatisink is still extremely hot. Reset the bios to defaults and tried another CPU, same results. Tested every component in another motherboard and everything works and checks out just fine. Gigabyte is now giving me the run around insisting that the board is just fine and "The NB Heatsink is already validated to be able to operate at it's current spec" So its validated to run at temperatures hot enough to burn you? I am not very happy with the situation. It has now been a month since I first started having issues and these issues have not been resolved. I am going to be buying a new motherboard and it will NOT be a Gigabyte board as they have now lost my business. I am done dealing with this problem and Gigabyte can have the board back for all I care at this point.

5 out of 5 eggsReview on revision 1.1

Pros: Great overclock ability for the price point, truly it is insane for how cheap this board is (got mine for 90 dollars) my 6350 is running at 4.7 ghz with a 1.4 v core kraken cooler keeps it under 45c at all times typically reaching a peak of 40c. the northbridge sometimes hits up to 70c on this board but from what i have read it's safe up to 90c.

Cons: surprisingly, none.

Other Thoughts: Don't know if it's my case (Thermaltake urban S31) or if it's the motherboard but the USB 3.0 plug is very loose. not listing this as a con because i don't know which is the culprit.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Experience

Pros: Good capabilities for modern CPUs with plenty of slots for peripherals and equipment. I am excited to take advantage of the fast charging slots for my various devices, but I haven't had an opportunity yet. I have only had the board running for <1 day, so there is little I can review at this point.

Cons: The first board I received was DOA. There was no POST tone or error tone produced during startup. All of the equipment was deemed compatible with the board, and the CPU, GPU, PSU, HDs, etc. were tested in other working machines in my lab space or multimeters/load testers in the case of the PSU. I determined that the motherboard was likely dead. I sent the board back for an RMA 29 days ago and did not receive a replacement until yesterday. This means that for four weeks, I had no primary computer to perform my research and labwork, forcing me to work with significantly less. Since I wanted to make sure that the motherboard was the only dead part of the new computer, the delay meant that $55 in rebates was allowed to expire.

If you are worried about inferior equipment, I encourage you to consider the device protection options that Newegg provides. Hopefully they would protect you from getting [emphatic vocabulary omitted at the request of Newegg] like I did.

Other Thoughts: The board seems to be worthwhile, and perhaps I will learn to be happy with it in time. But the poor experience has incurred this unpleasant review and a future avoidance of Gigabyte equipment.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Motherboard

Pros: I bought this board on October 13, 2011 which was 2.8 years ago as of writing. The board has been a solid performer during all that time until now. Of the three 990FX boards I've used, it has consistently produced the best overclocks and provided the greatest stability. It didn't even balk when I coated it with polyurethane back in 2011 and used it for dry ice runs. Its onboard USB 3.0 controller seems to behave well with anything I plug into it and is nearly twice as fast as the one on my MSI 990FXA-GD80V2. The slot layout allows for users with many cards to be able to fit them unlike some other boards.

Cons: The only problem is that the board is built kind of cheap. The heatsink retention mechanisms for both the CPU voltage regulators and chipset heatsinks are plastic. After extended use as a daily setup in my case, the plastic eventually became brittle and snapped when lightly bumped while unplugging the ATX power connector. Other boards like the MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 use metal for this purpose; I suppose MSI learned their lesson after the K9A2 Platinum had essentially the same issue.

Other Thoughts: It worked great for just shy of three years. That isn't a bad investment, but a 5 cent plastic clip taking a motherboard out of service is a silly failure none the less.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with this product

Pros: Sturdy board, plenty of ports and room for expansion, quick and easy install (popped right into rear panel and over my grounding screws with no issues)

Cons: None that I could really think of. I am not a huge fan of how the SATA ports are right up against the edge of my case, but I am sure this wouldn't be a problem with a full-tower.

Other Thoughts: I recently started building my first computer, I originally went out and bought a Gigabyte GA-970 that turned out to be DOA. Newegg was great and gave me a full refund so I figured I would upgrade to the 990 chip-set just to be safe in case I wanted to have an easier time upgrading parts in the future.
