5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Very good for gaming.

Very Fast.

Very Overclockable. [Because of low voltage requirements of Ivy Bridge, 6 phase for the CPU is

good enough for moderate overclocking (up to 4.4GHz ~ 4.6GHz), on air with great air flow and room ambient temperature around 72 to 75 degrees F.]

Cons: Almost none.

1st PCIe [16x] slot is too close to my large CPU air cooler. I have to use a "flat tip" screw driver to unlock the video card latch lock.

Other Thoughts: I was in the computer industry for decades, owned my own company, and among other titles was a designer and computer consultant; my field of study was primarily computer hardware. I also used to have a hobby of overclocking until something broke, in order to find limits in components. I have gained a lot of knowledge from those experiments. However, I am now disabled and can no longer afford to break things.

Although I do other work on my computer, my primary requirement is for playing games and helping others with answers to problems in computer forums.

I am old and because of my health I use a great deal of medication, however, I enjoy gaming and even more, the gaming community with the use of TeamSpeak.

********

On another important note, and that is many people giving negative reviews skip important basic information, for example, do not state that they and the computer were or were not grounded during build or upgrade, or provide system details - for example an inadequate PSU can cause havoc and, in some cases, eventual death of hardware. This lack of information degrades the accuracy of some reviews, and sometimes renders them useless; please keep that in mind, especially when reading negative reviews that do not list basic information about their build.

I ground myself and the computer, the result is, over 30 years+ in the computer field, with the exception of one stick of defective RAM and a few power supplies and hard drives that were made from the same factory batch and arrived in the same shipment, I have experienced almost no hardware problems, especially over the last 10 years.

And, over those past 30 years plus I have built so many systems [and repaired even more - that were built by different companies than ours or mine] that I cannot tell you a number, I built or repaired too many to recall.

I know this is a very long review and I appreciate and want to thank you for your patience to those that have read it completely.

My Computer specs :

Motherboard: Z77X-D3H [version 1.0], BIOS version F16
Power Supply: Corsair TX650M
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel i5 3570K
Thermal compound: GELID GC-EXTREME [Prolimatech PRO is almost as good]
CPU Cooler: Noctura NH-C14 --- with both fans it clears G.Skill RipJaws X by ~ 3/16 inch [this cooler is good for an overclock up to ~ 4.6GHz continual use [my CPU cruses at 4.4GHz], depending upon CPU quality [luck of the draw] and case air temperature - however, this cooler is large]
Video: Sapphire R9 290 [I use MSI Afterburner to manipulate fan speeds on the reference version.]
RAM: 16GB G.Skill RipJaws X, DDR3 1866 @ CAS 9 [Ripjaws Z also works as both are 40mm tall]
Solid State Drive: Intel 330 Series 180GB SATA 3
HDD: WD 640GB Black, WD 1TB Black
Case: HAF 922 [with an extra 200mm fan in door].

4 out of 5 eggsRobust, but keep the bios up to date

Pros: Robust motherboard. No problems after more than a year of hard use on multiple systems.

Cons: Windows users: Be careful to keep bios up to date before accepting patches from Microsoft. Had three computers and 2 of the 3 never booted after accepting service pack from Microsoft. Problem was later tied to having a bios that was slightly out of date. A lot of time was lost. So make sure you keep your bios up to date when those automatic patches land on your system.

5 out of 5 eggsThis board rocks

Pros: This board has everything and still works perfectly after 18 months. Even flashing the bios to the latest version was easy.
The secondary Marvell drive controller has it's own utility so you can run multiple raid arrays with this board. Intel XMP is included in the bios utility and OCing RAM/graphics/CPU is simple (all three of mine were made to be OCed. YMMV if you are not working with unlocked components)

Cons: Not a single con.

2 out of 5 eggsBought elsewhere

Pros: Motherboard is solid, great features (for the most part) lots of options for upgradability

Cons: I purchased this motherboard a little over a year ago and never noticed that my ram was only running at 1333mhz. when I tried clocking it to 1600 my computer wouldn't POST. I contacted Gigabyte and they replied saying that because I'm using an i5 2500k that I cannot use 1600mhz it must remain at 1333. Now I wanted some flexibility in ram selection when I was looking to buy a motherboard and now I have no flexibility as I am forced to leave my ram at 1333 indefinitely.

Other Thoughts: this would easily be a five star rating if i was able to use the ram at 1600 however when gigabyte said its my fault for not having a ivy bridge processor, that disappointed me.

1 out of 5 eggsslow tech support

Pros: was great for a year. worked out of the box.

Cons: network adapter died a few days ago. windows says it can't find the adapter. i tried downloading new drivers from Gigabyte. that didn't work. tried fresh install of windows on a spare hd and had the same problem. also checked the router and that works. it's now been 2 days since i contacted Gigabyte support and i haven't gotten a response. this is unacceptable! Gigabyte better take care of this soon if they expect me to ever buy one of their products again!

3 out of 5 eggsHope for Dumbo!

Pros: very intuitive and user friendly window-ish bios setup. I like the USB 3.0 ports all over the back., integrated HD 3000 graphics seems to do the job on most non-FPS gaming applications. Had it together and running again in under 2 hrs. Plenty of expandability and room to SLI later.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: it needs another system fan plug. I have a side fan blowing inwards that I intend to find an adapter for. On a positive note, gigabyte responded to my other post (can't edit it for some reason) and so there's some hope that they may be able to do something. Looks like the eVGA 650 Ti Boost doesn't like this card any more than it did the old ASUS one this one replaces. I'll pick up a Gigabyte 760 GTX 4GB on the next price drop.

1 out of 5 eggsCall me Dumbo

Pros: lotsa good reviews and IT professional friends recommended it to replace a finicky ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 that's 2 yrs old now. It only liked ASUS graphics cards, so I'm guessing this newer Gigabyte board will like the new eVGA 650 Ti Boost I recently purchased since the ASUS board kept having CTDs after even flashing the bios.

Cons: I'm a dummy for somehow bending the cpu socket pins when I put in my chip. Reordered another one. Hopefully, it'll get here by Friday so I can put this thing back together again.

Other Thoughts: just blew $145! Weeee!

3 out of 5 eggsGood board, but...

Pros: Integrated HDMI and DVI ports for dual screens
Dual BIOS
SATA and other motherboard connectors in good locations

Cons: BIOS requires Windows to update

Other Thoughts: I really like this board. However, GIGABYTE only makes their BIOS updates available in Windows executable format, e.g. ".exe" extension. This oversight prevents me and every other GIGABYTE motherboard user from updating the BIOS when running any operating system other than Windows. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing any GIGABYTE motherboards in the future and must recommend that all Linux users look elsewhere for their motherboards needs.

5 out of 5 eggsOne Month In

Pros: Sleek color/design
PCI slots from PCIe 3, to PCI
Numerous USB 3.0 rear panels
Runs very well, strong OC support
Front panel pin guide printed on mobo (VERY handy)
4 SATA connectors

Cons: Possibly ruins an OS upon upgrade from an older MoBo (See Other Thoughts)

Other Thoughts: The reason I listed what I did as a con, was because both my drives that I brought in from an older MoBo refused to boot. While one was a new SSD, that had hardly any data on it, the other is not. However, I'm not trying to use the other one to boot. It's just something to keep an eye out for.
Upon trying to boot with either of the drives, the system hangs at launching classpnp.sys, and reboots. I'm not sure if that's to be expected, but it was a large surprise to me.

I'll come back, and update my review if anything falters within the year.
