5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: 8x SAS Ports
3 way SLi/CFx
Quad Channel Memory
Bookoos of USB ports and connection possibilities

Cons: BIOS is difficult to use, SAS raid is tricky unless you know that the default Raid is SATA SAS isn't backwards compatible with SATA. However, STAT is BP with SAS.

Other Thoughts: I'm happy I bought this board. I have it paired with a 4930k and 2 560TI's 3 1tb WD HDD's and 2 2tb WD SAS Drives as well as 2 10k 300gb SATA drives in raid 0

1 out of 5 eggsProblem - Boot Loop

Pros: None so-far

Cons: Started with boot loop and no beep - Tried swapping CPU and power supply, didn't help. Contacted Gigabyte, they said the problem is with Motherboard BIOS, it was shipped with old BIOS version. Gigabyte asked me try with Xeon Sandy Bridge CPU and update BIOS, Don't have one, so had to RMA back to Gigabyte. Waiting for the BIOS updated motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte should have updated the BIOS before shipping the product.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Here

Pros: Compatability, stability, performance

Cons: Like other z77 boards out there, does not support two x16 PCI Express lines for those running SLI like myself.

Other Thoughts: running two GTS 660's, Intel 520 SSD, Corsair Ram and PSU, and no problems with stability or USB 3.0 headers.

Happy with board.

1 out of 5 eggsMajor problems with USB 3.0

Pros: Stable, good overclocking options, nice bios menu, allows 64 GB of memory

Cons: usb 3.0 does not work. devices are not being recognized, sometimes fixed by reboot (not overclocked system), useless support

Other Thoughts: I would not buy it again. Spent $300 and am stuck with USB 2.0 because the 3.0 implemention on this board is buggy.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your comments. Honest and constructive opinions are always welcome. We apologize for your difficulty with your GIGABYTE product.

Please be sure all USB3.0 drivers are installed. This model has 4x USB3.0 ports from a VIA VL800 chip, and 2x USB3.0 ports from Fresco FL1009 chip.

Please be sure to allow the drivers to load before using the USB ports. Otherwise the speeds may be reduced to USB2.0 speeds.

If you require further assistance, please contact us at newegg-support@gigabyte-usa.com with the case number 2013071502. Include your complete system configuration.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Gigabyte Product I've Ever Bought

Pros: Has a BIOS reset button on the motherboard so when it constantly freezes or boot loops you can reset the bios.

Cons: Everything about the board, HDD support is horrible, 3730K is constantly underclocking, after reset it fails to boot a video signal and needs to be reset at BIOS level, WIFI and Bluetooth card are not officially supported in Windows 8, confusing EFI interface, odd memory compatability, failure to recognize SSD as SSD on both Intel RST driver sets

Other Thoughts: We have built over 200 Gigabyte desktops and the MB usually have very little issue, but this hybrid workstation/x79/c600/garbage was the worst Gigabyte product I have ever owned. We have had a lot of success with Gigabyte Boards but I will never build a high end GB desktop for a customer again.

1 out of 5 eggsSAS ports not working!

Pros: holds 64 gb RAM

Cons: SAS/SATA ports aren't recognizing my sata drives. this is completely irritating. i have a bunch of hard drives that i put in this computer that i can't even use because the SAS/Sata ports aren't working. they recognize the drives in the BIOS but then nowhere else. i can't choose them to boot from. OS won't mount them either.

i've read many reports of others with the same problem..

i've read one needs a xeon to use these, but Gigabyte support have told me it shouldn't matter & that they should work.

it has very few 6 gb/s ports. that's just terrible. i really shouldn't have bought this board on those grounds alone. it has 8 sas/sata ports but what good are they if they don't work? such a waste. :(

Also, the board takes really long to boot.

I seriously wish i didn't throw the box away for this thing. I would have returned it. I've contacted gigabyte support and can send it in but i'm not sure that's going to work, and worse, i don't have time to wait for them to work on it then send it or another board back. i need to use my computer in the meantime. this is terrible. :(

this is my second gigabyte board & i'm not happy at all.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great. Design Could Improve

Pros: It works. Loaded with features and looks great; none of those childish gun-shaped heatsinks on some other boards. Lots of SATA connectivity and 8 DIMM slots are awesome.

Cons: While I think the board looks fine as it is, I would have preferred to see a black/grey theme like on the X79-UP4. One of the reasons I didn't get the Rampage V Extreme was the color scheme didn't match at all. In high end builds people care a lot about the look of their rigs and it annoys me sometimes when an otherwise good board alienates some potential customers because of the color. Black and grey goes with pretty much anything. Wasn't a problem for me, but something to think about. One thing that bothers me though is the Red power button. Just looks completely out of place. Last is the PCI Express layout which could be better. It's not a direct issue (or I wouldn't have bought it lol) but it does limit my expansion options a little. I don't see the need for a legacy PCI Slot, surely anything using that interface likely won't have drivers for W8 anyway, and only some for W7. For an ATX Board, I think a much better layout is:
x16
x1
x16
x16
x16
x1
x16
(Cont. in Other)

Other Thoughts: That PCI Express Layout gives you the most flexibility, as you can do 4-way dual slot graphics, or 3-way triple slot, or 3-way dual slot with a slot of space in between each for breathing room or for two single slot cards (x8 RAID card in slot 3, x1 audio card in slot 6? etc. lots of options). And I know there aren't enough lanes for five x16 slots, just run them in x8 mode when you have triple graphics, but they should at least all be wired for x16 so you have more flexibility in placing your cards. Also I know this board only has 6 slots to make more room for the DIMM slots and heatpipe. It'd be nice to see an XL-ATX version of this board with 7 slots in that layout (filling slots 2-8 on a case, so a 9-slot case can fit a GPU in the bottom slot) and also with a black/grey theme. Lastly it would have been nice to have a right-angle USB 3.0 header, and a SATA 6Gbps LSI controller. Anyway, no eggs off for any of this. Just offering my two cents for future improvement.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: • Makes for a very stable and versatile single-socket Xeon workstation.
• Solid design and build quality.
• Plenty of SATA/SAS connectors.
• Provision for multiple PCIe 3.0 graphics cards.
• Everything onboard supported under FreeBSD. Note, however, I have not tested the included WiFi card.

Cons: • Takes a long time to POST, but not really that odd for a server/workstation board.

Other Thoughts: Examining this board, it looks like what can best be described as "over-engineered." Since I don't overclock, I have an extra measure of confidence that these circuits can more than handle all the current/heat I am throwing at them. I've been running with an Intel Xeon E5-1660 3.3GHz CPU, 4 x 8GB Kingston ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600MHz RAM, and it performs exceptionally well, with perfect stability.

This is my first Gigabyte motherboard, and so far I'm impressed.
