3 out of 5 eggsdoing great until it died

Pros: Good features. Small. Nice price-point.
Contemporary minimalism.
I still love this board, I just want it back!
Easy online RMA form.

Cons: Died without warning after 6 months
VERY slow RMA (9 weekdays after shipping conf) . No advance-RMA procedure, repair-only

software is usually a weak showing on motherboards and gigabyte is usually leading this pack, but with this one they are back in the pack with everyone else

Other Thoughts: I have simple needs. I'm not an overclocker or a heavy gamer. I built a very nice, small PC around this board and the concept of staying close to reference specs. I went for reliability and simplicity. I like uptime and low power usage above all things.
The board died outright after 6 months of moderate minecrafting in the evenings.
Including shipping time, I will have been without a motherboard for nearly a month when I receive my repaired board on Monday.
It's all less than ideal where it should have been very simple.

1 out of 5 eggsDefinitely NOT Ultra Durable

Pros: The specs for this board looked great, but....

Cons: After removing this item from the package, I noticed that the pins for System Fan 3 were slightly bent. Not a big deal, since I did not intend to use it. I installed the CPU and RAM into this board and began looking at the options in the BIOS. The BIOS is very kludgy. Took a few minutes just to find the system information that showed processor and RAM info. Within a few minutes, the board just randomly shut off. I restarted it, and a few minutes later, it shut off again. This motherboard will not stay running for more than 10 minutes, and keeps randomly shutting off. I am returning it to Newegg for a refund, and will not buy another Gigabyte board.

Other Thoughts: I own an IT support company. I build dozens of computers each year for my clients. I normally stick with Intel boards because they are rock-solid for my needs. The only reason I purchased this board was because the Intel boards I was using were no longer available. I was a bit apprehensive to buy a Gigabyte board, but their new Ultra Durable moniker persuaded me to give this board a try. I am building systems that are intended for mission-critical applications, and durability and reliability are my biggest concerns. The impression I got from my very first Gigabyte Ultra Durable motherboard, within minutes of taking it out of the box, is that it is junk. Sadly, this was the first and last time I will buy a Gigabyte product.

Please check the following:

1. Check the CPU model on the officially CPU support list on GIGABYTE website to ensure the processor is supported by the motherboard.

2. Check the CPU temperature in the Bios to make sure it's under the CPU specification, normally it should be around 45-50C.

3. Inspect the CPU and/or CPU socket to for bent or broken pins.

4. If the machine is overclocked, undo the overclock to verify whether the lockup or freeze still occurs.

5. Test each memory modules, one at a time to ensure each memory stick can function properly.

6. If there's add-on card(s), remove it/them from the board to eliminate hardware compatibility.

7. Check the Bios version to ensure it's the latest Bios. Backup all your data before trying to update the Bios.

8. Check for loose power cable/data cable on the storage devices such as hard disk drives, SSD drives, external USB drive, USB thumb drive from the PC.

Gigabyte didnt check this board b4 it left factory, make sure you test all ram slots and pcie because they seem to have alot of issues with this board.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Z87 capability. Full range of video ports to handle any monitor. Legacy keyboard connector for my expensive antique.

Cons: Lo-rise chipset heatsink runs red hot, and chrome cover doesn't help it radiate. SATA ports are all right angle, which means only straight or left-angle cable connectors work.

4 out of 5 eggsall good except one issue

Pros: Looks sexy, and is extremely durable. This is heavier than my old atx mobo and it's incredibly sturdy. Has all the expansion I personally need, and the option to run SLI on a micro atx board is really nice. Fits well in my fractal design r2 mini and I'm really happy with downsizing from a full atx tower. (portability is awesome!) I'd venture to say that the only reason you really need a full atx board these days is if you need all the expansion. This has all the same features as comparable full sized boards, otherwise.

I've comfortably oc-d my haswell i5 to 4.3Ghz, and my ram runs very fast. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231503)

Cons: The one issue I had with this board is with some of the voltage settings for overclocking so only read this if you care about that.
For one: *It does not come with adaptive voltage mode* which is an extremely useful haswell feature that is present on the asus boards and the msi ones as well, I believe. adaptive voltage is a fantastic feature, worth reading up on it.

My issue: The offset votlage mode just does not work for me. After testing my cpu to see what voltages it needs in manual mode, I was completely unable to get a stable overclock using offset voltage mode. Inspection during testing revealed that voltage supplied to the cpu would waver between the normal voltage and the offset I set, which I dont understand. Within a few minutes of testing it would blue screen every time, even when I supplied a large surplus of voltage. I'm not sure if my board is faulty but this functionality doesn't work for me.

I only took one egg off because enabling the various power saving states under the advanced cpu settings appears to still allow the processor to receive low power voltages when it idles. good enough for me, but still disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed

Pros: It looks good.

Cons: Recently, after having the board for months (and using it for just about two weeks) I was moderately overclocking the processor. I'm talking max 4.5ghz 1.28v. During one of the stress tests, while I was away, the computer shut off, but when I went to turn on the PC again, nothing happened. After many painful hours of testing components and swapping parts, I concluded the motherboard had died.

So, I ordered another one (not from Newegg). This time, when I hooked everything up, the PC would turn on extremely briefly (less than half a second) and shut off. Every time I pressed the power button, this would happen. AGAIN, I swapped parts, reset the BIOS, tested everything. The motherboard was the problem.

Not only were both boards useless, Gigabyte's software is complete garbage. I couldn't get any of the programs to install correctly offline, and once I finally got it to work using the included CD, many of the programs still gave me problems, and the fan software doesn't have a "launch at start" option, which is necessary for the settings to be applied.

Other Thoughts: This is the first 1 star review I have ever given. The computer I was using this in had a deadline to be finished by, and these failures have been extremely frustrating.

1 out of 5 eggsboard has good reviews and looks good on paper,but...

Pros: excellent features (at least for me), well reputed manufacterer and good (or maybe even great reviews)

Cons: This board has been nothing but problems for the last 4 months. My new build appeared to be working but would freeze at random times. After a lot of problem solving and testing EVERYTHING (motherboard, cpu, psu, ram, hdd even CABLES,etc) I came to the conclusion that there is some slight incompatibility with my ram. manually DOWNclocking the ram to less than 1600MHz made it work. That took me 2 weeks of my spare time... Suddenly the last few days hard disks started working strangely. At first it would not finish booting if I had the second ssd on. I removed it and then there were issues with the dvd drive as well. Finally my storage drive at some point fails with messages like :

ata2: hard resetting link
ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 1 SControl 310)

and I need to reboot so that it MIGHT work for a little longer.
The disks are new, I tried them on other machines and are working perfectly. I am obviously suspecting it is the motherboard again... I will request support from gigabyte but I strongly suspect I am on my own so I will probably order a new asus or intel motherboard and then I am going to get over it.

Other Thoughts: This is 2 out of 2 for Gigabyte Z87 mobos. This was the first time in my life I chose Gigabyte products and I am not going to do it again.

2 out of 5 eggsWaiting on a good bios revision...

Pros: Great features packed into an mATX package at a decent price.

Cons: Gigabyte has been having some serious issues with all of their Z87 boards when it comes to filling all the RAM slots. I went round and round with their customer services with another Z87 board. They had me do all sorts of things that I didn't think necessary, and wasted about a week of my time. They insisted they've never heard of the issue with 4 sticks of RAM, but a quick google search will show you that this is definitely a well known issue. Fortunately for the other board I have, the beta F9a firmware fixed the problem, and that machine is running great. This motherboard, however, doesn't have the same bios revision available. I've put in a ticket with Gigabyte to see when they will (hopefully) be releasing a revision that will fix the problem. For now I will have to live with half of my RAM. If you're considering this board, be sure to buy all the RAM you want in two sticks. Otherwise...stay away and buy an ASUS board.

Other Thoughts: Its beyond me that Gigabyte hasn't tackled this problem more quickly. There are a lot of burned customers like me on these z87 boards. What's even more frustrating is that customer support is really nice to you, but they send you on a wild goose chase, knowing full well what the problem is, but they won't acknowledge it. In my book, that's the kind of company to stay away from. If they were to admit they have an issue and deliver a fix in a reasonable time, I can live with that. But to deny and to lie, I can't forgive.

3 out of 5 eggsTemperamental

Pros: GUI BIOS has an insane amount of features. Everything you could possibly need is here.

Love the black and grey color scheme.

Onboard sound is static free. Headphone Virtualization does a great job at creating a 7.1 field in your head. This is a godsend for gaming.

Tons of USB 3.0 Ports

Cons: Capacitors partially block the last PCIe slot, so you can't fully insert a card into it, but it still works. It's a really dumb design.

Just like my last Gigabyte board, this one doesn't like to be moved. It'll freeze on the POST screen, requiring a reset. Sometimes it'll even happen for no reason at all. Nothing is overclocked. Always works just fine after a reset, though. Still his is frustrating because I use this for a Steam Box.

Other Thoughts: 4 Case fan headers

Second PCIe slot is 16x wide but only has 8x pins connected, so if you're running a single GPU keep it on the top slot.

Wish there were 2 more SATA slots
