1 out of 5 eggsnot compatible out of box with 4970k

Pros: If you have another cpu to flash the bios, i am sure this motherboard is awesome.

Cons: the mobo comes with an older bios. for it to work with nearly every single cpu in their cpu compatibility list, you'll need to put in an older cpu that is compatible with their previous bios.

Sadly, GIGABYTE makes no mention what bios comes installed, and its not explained ANYWHERE in the user manual. this leads to you wasting your time and praying it has the right bios.

here is a protip: it probably doesn't. if you dont have an extra cpu laying around to flash this bios, do NOT waste your time. I ordered a different board, and will be refunding this one.

Other Thoughts: None really, it would be nice if manufacturers clearly indicated in the specs which bios version the motherboard will come with.

1 out of 5 eggsI'll never buy Gigabyte again

Pros: It has pretty lights.
It fits into the PC case.
It takes up space.

Cons: Just past the Newegg return period my Gigabyte Amp mobo began randomly booting (yes actually turning itself on) rebooting up to 3 times when I attempted to boot and booting to a blue screen of death. Having lots of spare parts I swapped out every single component from PSU, CPU, RAM, GPU, case etc. I updated drivers and BIOS, reinstalled WIndows, and pulled back the updated drivers - trying multiple configurations and versions. It did exactly the same thing regardless of what I swapped. I even bought a different version of RAM listed as compatible (as was the original). Nothing worked. I contacted Gigabyte "technical support". I sent them a parts list and the system config. Described what I already done. They basically told me to begin swapping parts and updating drivers. I asked them which part should I swap since I has already swapped some parts TWICE! (Obviously they had not bothered to read my original contact). After weeks of telling me to do what I had already done I asked for an RMA and was pointed to a link by the No-Tech Support of Gigabyte. I had to fill out a form with the exact same information as the Tech Support form to get the RMA. When the approval came I sent them print-outs of my conversations with their own Tech Support and asked only three things of them. One- Please refund my money. Two - If that was not possible, Please replace this board with another board of a different model as I did not trust the build. Three If THAT was not possible please replace this board with a NEW board because the one I had was deeply flawed and was useless. After having it for only a few days (I told them it could go for a week without failing or it could go for minutes) they sent me a terse email saying that they were returning my board. It was fine. They did nothing. Their "testing" was as good as their "Tech Support" and their guarantees are worthless. If they ran that board for more than 24 hours I would be surprised. More likely they plugged it in, ran a quick diagnostic and said "Good to go!" It's not an expensive board and the TINY bit of money it would have cost them to provide something the business world refers to as "Good Will" would have been insignificant. No. So I am giving this board and Gigabyte the worst possible review of which I am capable. I will NEVER buy a product from them again. I wish the people who have done well by them the best. I'm sure many of their products work fine. But, if you are outside the return window and it fails and it is something that is not so obvious that it fails immediately - do NOT expect Gigabyte to stand behind their product or even pay attention to your detailed description of the problem. Had they just parked that board in a corner for a week they would have seen it misbehave. Too expensive a testing process? Fine. Then refund the money ($85), replace it with a new board or do something other than send it back saying in effect "We ignored what you said about the problem. Good luck."

Other Thoughts: This was a present to my then GF (now my fiance). She failed to inform me of the problems until a few months has passed because she didn't want to hurt my feeling about building her a lousy beginner gaming PC. I'm not sure exactly how long it ran before failing, just that it was after I could do a straight Newegg return and therefore at the mercy of Gigabytes good graces - or lack thereof. I recognize the random reboots such as I describe are tough to diagnose. But not impossible to recreate. I worked support for decades and know every error can be recreated under controlled conditions - it is very doable given a bit of time and effort. I do not believe it was worth Gigabyte's time or effort to keep me as a customer.

Newegg was wonderful. When I explained the problem they went so far as to reimburse me for the RMA shipping to the Gigabyte address. It was $19 that would have been out-of-pocket were it not for the wonderful customer service at Newegg. As it is I am out around $85 dollars for the motherboard.

A car that only starts part of the time is far worse than a car that won't start at all. That's because it's harder to diagnose and the car that starts part of the time can strand you. Same thing for motherboards like the lemon I bought. No point in putting it into a PC since it has already failed in the middle of writing and gaming etc. and forced me to recreate my work (or get utterly destroyed online).

Fortunately I already took every single OTHER part that I was using with the original build and paired them a beautiful ASUS board which performs perfectly. No random reboots. No Blue Screen. Etc. Thank you Newegg for your great prices (where else would I buy the new board) and wonderful customer service.

As for Gigabyte - their 3 year guaranteed or whatever it was they they bragged about on the box was not honored and I am very disappointed at my shoddy treatment. But it could have been worse. It could have been one of their more expensive motherboards. So it was a cheap lesson to learn to not stray from a manufacturer I have used successfully for many decades - Asus. I've only had one bad board with them and they replaced it after a year - no problem. Probably why I was shocked at how this turned out. Again. I'm sure many of you reading this are fans of Gigabyte and had good luck with them. I wish you continued good luck with your purchases. Just wanted people to know what happened to me and mine. Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsRandom Reboots Terrible Tech Support

Pros: The layout is wonderful. It was well-designed. Love the H-81 chip-set as it gets the job done for a moderate gaming machine at a good price. The SOUND is amazing. Very clear without distortion. Love the look of the board from the gold caps to the beautiful green LED lighting around the board. It is a beauty to behold in a case with a big plexi side panel. It fits easily into the case. The tabs for the RAM are great! RAM slides in clean and easy - back out the same.

Cons: Unlike ASUS and many other wonderful boards, Gigabyte doesn't come with those very handy (for lack of a better term) "pin bundler". By that I mean it lacks those adapters that let you just plug all of the tiny wires from the front panel into a single, well-marked connector arranged in the correct order for the Mobo mount and then just pop it in. I've been using ASUS for years and assumed everyone did that now. I was wrong. Lots of little things like that seemed missing. The user manual was not very good.
BUT the single biggest problem was that this board liked to randomly boot, reboot or go to blue-screen. Let me explain. When you boot it, it might boot or go to blue-screen or just boot, then reboot..up to three more times. While in the middle of playing a game it might, reboot, go to blue screen or reboot three more times. After it has been turned off for hours, it might boot, go to blue-screen or reboot three more times. I see that this board did not last very long on Newegg. It probably didn't sell many units either. I won't warn people from buying it since Gigabyte pulled it (probably for being so terrible).

Other Thoughts: I've been building PCs since the 286 days. I've had Mobos that were DOA and other issues. I have never seen one that did this.
I tried to work with Gigabyte Tech Support. I had already swapped out every single component before I called them and told them as much. In my gave them the complete list of components down to the model number (do I even have to say I have done phone tech support for computers myself). I gave them every scrap of information available. Instead of reading that, they asked me to do what I had already done and asked for a list components. I just pointed them back to the prev contact. Then they asked for screen prints of the BIOS. I had already explained that the BIOS was current, gave them the release and told them it was set to "Default" via a Function key. But sure. I sent it in - reminding them that they already had this info in text form. They explained that the multiplier showed 14. I replied that that was the default display - even it is 13.33. They insisted I manually set it to 13.33. I did and sent them the display showing the default was still 14. They insisted that the PSU was too small (430 for a tiny H-81 board with a little nvidea GPU that pulls under 90 watts). So I slapped a 730 watt supply in there. Back to the multipler. This time they wanted me to show them all of the the BIOS settings -as I had already done before - but in CLASSIC mode. I had already been asking to RMA this board. A this point I demanded an RMA and told them under no circumstances would showing them the Classic view be of any value to them. The board is simply a bad board. Instead of issuing me one, they pointed me to a completely different site that forced me to reenter the information the Tech had in order to get the RMA. Tech Support at Gigabyte in my professional opinion is the absolute worst support I have ever encountered. Do not attempt to save a few dollars by purchasing their boards. If they work, great, if they fail you will be sorry. I have requested on my RMA that I get either a FULL REFUND or that I get a different model board of equal value. I DO NOT want the AMP back "repaired" and I do not want a new one out of the box. There is some inherent design flaw and I do not want to ever see it again. I am hopeful Gigabyte cares enough about their customers to do the right thing here. I will update you on the results.

2 out of 5 eggsCould have been much better

Pros: I got the board for the gold plated audio ports along for school. Worked really great at first. My first 1150 setup from upgrading from the 775 Q6600 setup.

Cons: Got this in a combo deal with ram and does not like my ram as seen here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233309 cannot figure out why. Has been BSODing on me recently. In Cpuz, it is supposed to have a 1:1 ram ratio along with 2T command rate. I have changed many settings multiple times.

Also frustrated that every board does not automatically have VGA and DVI aswell. Didn't need them at first but they are a plus on every board. It's almost common courtesy.

Had many gigabyte boards in the past. I am going with ASUS or MSI to replace this semi good effort. Board died within 6 months.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost a year and runs great!

Pros: -stable, reliable, and looks cool with the green LEDs
-recognizes my 2x2gb Patriot Sector 5 1600mhz ram and my 2x4gb Kingston 1866mhz Hyper X T1 ram
-frequent updates on Gigabyte's website
-sounds great with Hi-Res 192khz recordings
-excellent sound quality from ALC898 chip for less than $100

Cons: -USB DAC power option does not work in BIOS
(USB DAC power feature enables or disables the power for the USB DAC connector on the back panel to provide only the audio signal if your DAC runs on an external power supply. This improves the sound quality)

It could also be an issue with my DAC's USB connection (using Arcam irDac)

-sound could be too "clean" or "accurate" for some who prefer a warmer, colored sound

-does not tolerate poorer recordings (MP3s, etc.)

Other Thoughts: Running latest BIOS and no issues. I think the negative reviews indicate an incompatibility between this board and newer Intel chips. I'm using an i3 that came out last year. Upgrading to newer BIOS is the solution. Gigabyte should have included a way to upgrade the BIOS externally, but that is a feature I've seen on higher end mobos.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Previous Review

Pros: Eventually got it to work, but was much more complicated than it needed to be.

Cons: Depending on the BIOS version you get, it may or may not work with the chip. This is a major inconvenience.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to update my previous review. It turns out the board was not actually DOA, but the combo deal I bought from Newegg was incompatible with each other without some tweaking.

I bought this MB in a combo deal with an i3-4150 processor. You'd expect the two items in a combo deal to work together, right? However, the motherboard only supports that processor if its running version F3 of its BIOS. Depending on when the board is manufactured, it may or may not have the latest BIOS. And there is no way to know until you get the board in the mail. The board I was shipped was running the F1 version of the BIOS.

Older boards, that come with the F1 BIOS won't support newer chips. This is a major inconvenience, because in order to upgrade the BIOS, you need a supported chip. It's a chicken/egg problem. You can't flash the BIOS with an unsupported chip in there.

Of course, my old computer didn't have the same socket chip, so I didn't have a way to flash the BIOS. Luckily, I was able to scare up a supported chip from a friend, but if you can't, you'd need to ship the board back.

Gigabyte offered to flash it for me, but I'd have to pay the shipping to them, and wait even longer.

1 out of 5 eggsGot Two, Both DOA, Avoid

Pros: Price wasn't terrible, got it as part of a combo deal. But price doesn't mean much when its DOA

Cons: Ordered one as part of a combo deal. Refused to boot, would constantly cycle on and off. RMAed the board, got a replacement, same issue. Swapped out every other part of the new system, thinking it couldn't possibly be two bad motherboards, I must be doing something wrong.

Not likely. Tested using a different case, power supply, CPU, everything, and the problem still persists. Had the same experience of several other people posting here. System would power on for about 3-5 seconds, then shut off and reboot itself. Will likely return this one as well and get something that actually works.

Disappointed I wasted so much time on this already.

Other Thoughts: Others seem to have similar experiences, I'd avoid this and get something with a better reliability ranking.

1 out of 5 eggsBSOD galore

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Driver/Bios issues cause Bluescreens whenever the power is turned off of the receiver or TV. Doesn't matter if you use an older driver or a newer one if you plan to use this board for a HTPC forget it. I've been battling this for weeks and there is no solution for a board with drivers and bios.that have bugs.

Other Thoughts: I've been a gigabyte mobo purchaser for almost 20 years and never have I had so many issues with one their mobos. I have never bought any other brand before. The worst part is the support. They send a one line question every couple days on something that I already covered in my detailed case notes. Meanwhile the days and weeks go by and the Home theater is offline. I'm afraid that Gigabyte has run their course and the decline has come to them. Any suggestions on a new manufacturer would be welcome.

1 out of 5 eggsFirst MOBO from Gigabyte I disliked

Pros: Cost
Functions

Cons: Fails to read HDD 2 out of 3 boots, and forces you to run repair setup. I purchased this with my first SDD thinking that was the issue until I swapped the SDD into my laptop and worked without issue. This Motherboard will either fail to read HDD, start windows, crash while using windows or randomly blue screen. Previously ruled out all other components (Processor, RAM, GPU, HDD, CD/PCI)

2 out of 5 eggsOne DOA, One Wonderful

Pros: This works wonderfully for a first time builder. The BIOS is easy to use and read, and the cables are easy to set up in a small case. It was a tight fit, but most issues had to do with my inexperience more than the board itself.

Cons: After about a month, the first board started giving intermittent and hard to diagnose boot errors. Even worse, NEWEGG offered a mail in rebate with the product. Therefore, they wouldn't let me return the product.

I eventually bought a separate board which works wonderfully, but I have the old, broken board with nothing to do with it. (GIGABYTE only offers replacements or repairs and NEWEGG won't take it at all). I was frustrated by the customer service of GIGABYTE and NEWEGG in this entire process, but I know I should take some of the blame since I was new and ignorant with many of the policies before I started.

Other Thoughts: Great board if it works, but it is absolutely high risk (looking at my review and others on here).

It is advertised for audiophiles, but I have not noticed anything extra-ordinary sound wise with the product, but that also comes with no complains.
