5 out of 5 eggsG1 sniper z87

Pros: Awesome mother board. I truly love it. Onboard Audio sounds great to me. Don't know about the changeable amp things, board only comes with one. enough ports for me and the apps well their apps. board seems solid which is good. bios is easy to navigate, especially coming from an msi motherboard. I have my I5-4670k oc'ed to 4.3ghz running nice and stable . my honest opinion the onboard audio is the best of the onboards. I think it sounds better than the creative fx soundblaster pci soundcard. which I used on my other board. I haven't heard any of the newer soundcards yet so dunno. Overall everything is holding awesome. only had 1 run around which wasn't to hard to fix. ill put that in other thoughts. I love this board. I'd definatly get another sniper series mb from gigabyte.

Cons: no cons.

Other Thoughts: My only issue. website recommended using appcenter and @bios to update bios version. ok no prob, till I misplaced the install cd from my box. (devious little 4yr old daughter I think lol). When I downloaded the app from gigabytes website it wouldn't act right. then finally after a few trys it took and was able to open appcenter and update my bios.
basically I was having trouble getting appcenter to open. not fault of the mb.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Flashy looking, price effective, seemingly all the qualities in a motherboard one would want.

Cons: Cannot populate all four ram slots without crashing. I thought I had a defective video card, or had seated the CPU wrong. After tons of stress and countless hours of testing, I stumbled on to Gigabyte's forums where I found this is a common issue with all gigabyte z87 motherboards. Am stuck with only using 2 slots for ram and horrified that 8 months after the release of this board there is still no fix. I wouldn't wish this board on my worst enemy.

3 out of 5 eggsFaulty Sound

Pros: When I first got this board I was really impressed. It was easy to install every piece of hardware. Drivers worked great, what more could I want?

Cons: I had wanted a mobo that would last, unfortunately this was not the case. After about two months, the sound would go full blast and become distorted. Ignoring my system volume settings. The only way to solve this issue was to restart my system. I tried reinstalling the drivers but that only proved to fix this issue for a few days. As I researched the matter, it seems it has been an issue for this board on more then just a few occasions. Having a difficult time to get a replacement board from Gigabyte, I gave up and had to buy a new board. Quite a hassle.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Board

Pros: Very nice motherboard, love the colors and the layout of the motherboard..

90% of the time most issues begin from the type of hardware your tryin to use. just because a product has 2000 reviews dont mean one with 20 reviews is gonna be bad..

hopefully my hardware specs will help someone in there build.

Cons: the new Bios gui was something that i do love but im use to the basic dos version but nothing im willing to knock an egg down for.

Other Thoughts: installation was easy, I really dont understand how anyone can bend pins while installing the cpu into the socket but..needless to say..easy peezy.

sound quality i have not tryed because i ALWAYS use a dedicated sound card iv never used onboard since iv owned computers so i can not give any views on that. is my part list i purchased and installed loaded up win 7 home prem x64bit within 5 to 10 mins i was staring at my desktop.

CPU: core i7 4770k (stock settings)
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) (ill get more if i need it)
CPU Cooler:Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Video Card: GTX 760 4gb
Powersupply: CORSAIR CX series CX750 750W
Case: NZXT Source 530 (AWSOME SEXY CASE)

onlything i had to do was set my memory timings in the rebooted. started win 7 install and was good to go.

i had already downloaded all the drivers an saved em to a jump drive..never touched the provided cd

all parts bought from newegg rest of the parts i already had (harddrive video card, soundcard etc)

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome, yet again

Pros: Bought yet another Gigabyte motherboard (been buying Gigabyte since the Athlon XP days), and once again very happy with it. That said, I usually buy more workstation-oriented motherboards, this was my first motherboard marketed toward gamers, so I figured I would give it a shot.

The two selling points of this motherboard are the Killer E2201 NIC, and the Sound Core3D chip:

The Killer E2201 NIC is cool?... I guess. Wake-on-LAN works (which is all I really needed), and with the driver software you can prioritize certain applications over others. To be honest I can't notice any real difference in performance when you prioritize an online game over every other app on your computer. Is the driver software working? Who knows, I can't tell. Just seems a little gimmicky to me. But it works just as good as the Intel NICs, so who am I to complain?

The Sound Core3D chip, however, is nice. I am by no means an audiophile, but I do work with professional audio engineers on a daily basis, so I like to at least pretend to know what I am talking about. The sound is very good for a consumer-level product, and the software is identical to that found on Sound Blaster's Z/Zx/ZxR series sound cards. The motherboard gives you the ability to swap operational amplifiers, but I have yet to do so. Gigabyte's own Op-Amp kit is hard to find (not sold in the USA?), and I haven't felt the need to look elsewhere for one.

The motherboard itself is *slightly* smaller than ATX, which should give you more room in your case. Because of this, you won't be able to use the right-most mounting holes that you typically have with a standard ATX motherboard. The compensate for this they give you an extra mounting hole on the middle row to help support the motherboard when plugging in DIMMs. But I for the life of me can't figure out which standard uses that mounting hole (it isn't ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX). At any rate, my Define R4 case certainly doesn't support whatever form factor that it was meant for, so I couldn't use that extra mounting hole. But I supported the bottom of the motherboard with my fingers when plugging in my memory and everything went well.

The UEFI/BIOS is essentially the same UEFI that Gigabyte uses with all of their Z87 motherboards, with a green Sniper-themed skin applied to it, a nice touch. Everything else is pretty standard for an overclocking capable high'ish-end motherboard. It all works well, but nothing terribly exciting in my opinion.

Cons: By far my biggest pet peeve is the location of the USB3 header. Instead of along the bottom of the motherboard like every other header, they decided to put it next to the 24-pin power header. Nearly all of Gigabyte's motherboards (maybe all motherboards from every manufacture?) of late put the USB3 header there... and it drives me NUTS because you have to bend that ultra-long, ultra-inflexible USB3 cable to fit into a place that it clearly was not designed to go. Cable management nightmare.

I also don't agree with the configuration they went with for FlexIO. I personally would rather have seen a single PCIe x4 and a single legacy PCI slot while sacrificing the necessary two USB3 ports. Instead they opted to have two PCI slots, six USB3 ports, and an unused PCIe lane. But, just my opinion.

Sound Blaster's driver software leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. They aren't BAD drivers, but instead just seem... empty. All of the advertised features are there and work well, but I guess I just expected more.

Beyond that, no real complaints. Gigabyte's AppCenter software (@BIOS, EZ Setup, EasyTune, On/Off Charge, etc) is terrible, but hey--it has always been terrible (like most motherboard software) and I fully expected it to be terrible before I bought it. I will say that the new look for the applications is significantly better, so Gigabyte deserves a gold-star for effort. But all of those applications are simply added-bonuses anyway and truly do not affect my overall opinion of the motherboard. That said, if you are buying the motherboard because of the included Gigabyte software, don't.

Other Thoughts: With the exception of the Killer E2201 NIC, this motherboard is 100% stock Intel Haswell Z87 platform. Not extra USB hubs, no extra SATA controllers, not PCIe controllers, nothing like that. Flex IO is set to six USB 3.0, six SATA III, and six PCIe 2.0 (one of those six lanes seems to be unused). Very much a no frills setup.

I "side-graded" to this motherboard from a GA-Z87X-UD4H. I was having issues with my Razer mouse and keyboard, which I had (incorrectly) assumed was caused by some of those extra frills in the UD4H. The goal was to get a super simple, yet capable motherboard while having the added bonus of freeing up some case space by ditching my old sound card. Combined this with a 4770K, 16gb of RAM, a Radeon R9 290, and a simple water cooling setup and I ended up with a fully capable gaming system with decent overclocking potential. Couldn't be happier.

I've noticed a lot of people have complained about the positioning of the SATA ports. I don't really know why, they seem fine to me. Perhaps there are issues with some cases that I didn't encounter with my Define R4, who knows.

2 out of 5 eggsReally?

Pros: nice layout if it functioned as it should

Cons: pops thru speakers loud as can be at startup. Intermitent error code 51 (memory initialization). Memory proven in previous I7 build (intel board). Gigabyte support on site is awful requires access to my info....for a support ticket? Just wow. Clean install win 7. I7 4770k. Crucial Tactical Tracer 16 gigs at 4 per. Samsung pro ssd.

Other Thoughts: As stated periodic problem...which I shouldn't have. Need contact info for Giga support that does NOT require access to my public yet personal info. Give it to Monday and then you get this garbage in the mail. Might want to not when functioning properly I can restart all day long and it's fine. Only occurs when left off overnight all drivers etc current (nothing yellow in control panel) Get on your job gigabyte. Make it right.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's okay.

Pros: Looks good, easy to install

Cons: Every couple of reboots, the BIOS will rearrange my Boot order and act as though I have no bootable disk drives connected to my system. Also, every time I go to reboot it, it likes to cycle through about 3 or 4 reboots before it will allow me to even select a boot device if I have too or boot straight into windows.

Other Thoughts: The cons in this are more of an annoyance than anything else, but they are worthy of dropping 2 eggs for it. Everything else on the board works great and the LEDs are a nice touch for my green machine.
