1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't boot, 2 malfunctioning boards

Pros: Front USB 3.0, 6 SATA ports gives me some room to expand, 3 PCI-e, very clearly marked front panel header, actually all the ports and slots were very clearly marked on the board and I really appreciate that.

Cons: I have tried 2 of these boards now and neither of them will boot, they fail in the same exact way.

After the first installation I hit the power button, the fans and hard disks started to spin up, then the light on one of the fans flickered and the machine just kept power cycling like that over and over. I returned the board and the new one does the exact same thing. It never even gets to the BIOS so I can't really do anything with it.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this along with a new Intel Pentium G3258 with the intention of upgrading a little file server I have and playing around with overclocking the G3258 that I hear so many people having fun with.

First off, I did not buy this item at Newegg, I am submitting this review here just so other people can be aware of the problems with this component.

Some interesting things about this purchase. When I was picking out the first one the salesman looked in the box and said "oh this one is brand new" with a look of surprise. I found that a little odd but let it pass. So, I get it home and the first thing I notice is the manual appears to have been used. Then I install it and have the problem noted in my CONS. I tried various troubleshooting steps and eventually disassembled the machine so I could return it. That is when I noticed some of the CPU contact pins were slightly bent. So I figured my problem was solved, and went ahead and returned it.

I explain to the customer service person that the pins are bent and the manual appears to have been used and I suspect this is a returned item that they just put back on the shelf. I'm not giving them a hard time, I just want a new board. They agree to an exchange and I go to grab another board. We ended up opening 5 of these boards until we found one that hadn't obviously been returned and put back on the shelf, some of them were absolutely mangled. That's fine, I found one that I was satisfied had never been opened buried in the back of their inventory. Got that one home, installed it and boom, same exact problem as the first time. I tried various things again, different RAM, different slot configurations, single stick, multi stick, a different PSU, etc. Some people I spoke with suggested that I might need to update the BIOS to get this board to work with my CPU. I was unable to try this as I do not own any CPUs of the same production generation as this board.

So, I am beginning to wonder if this board isn't just bunk altogether and the reason the shelf at that store was loaded with a bunch of returned boards is because they have a colossal DOA rate. I submitted a support ticket to Gigabyte, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

1 out of 5 eggsgigabyte declines warranty

Pros: None.

Cons: As with so many others that were unfortunate to buy this board, I experienced nothing but trouble. Gigabyte tech support had me perform numerous tests of memory, removing a video card, etc. and none of these were suspected of being the problem. I finally RAM'd the board, sent it and was disappointed they didn't find anything. Gigabyte returned the board to me defects and all. They did not test thoroughly nor did they stand behind their warranty, especially when they knew they had a "dog" in the hands of the public. Like another victim of Gigabyte, I went to much better things and bought an ASUS motherboard, which runs like a Swiss watch. The thing even runs quite happily and well running mismatched RAM, DDR2 and DDR3. It flat doesn't care and I have the 8 GBs of RAM I otherwise would not.

Other Thoughts: I visited a local box builder and he said all manufacturers sometimes release a "dog" into the market and I'll give Gigabyte some slack for that. However, I recall when I had to chase down a problem years ago in a computer I built based on an ASUS motherboard. I tested and exchanged everything but the motherboard and the problem remained so I sent it back to ASUS. They exchanged it for another board and the problem disappeared. I'll give ASUS extra points for standing behind their product, right or wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Basic MB

Pros: Has everything I needed in a new MB
Supports both USB 3 and 2 on the MB as well as multiple connections in the back plate.
Low price, under a $100US.

Cons: CPU fan connector only supports a four wire fan. My water cooler only has a three wire fan.

Other Thoughts: This MB only has 1 PCI-Express x16 slot but I do not intend to have SLI for this system so I knew that when I spec'ed it.

4 out of 5 eggsRevised review.

Pros: Works as advertised after gigabyte repaired it and sent it back under warranty.

Cons: Was defective out of the box.

Other Thoughts: I wish I could edit my other review, but this will have to do. I sent the board in under warranty and then recieved the same board back a couple of weeks later. There was no documentation in the box explaining what was found and what was done. A quick email to gigabyte and they informed me what they did. A minor inconvenience. Now the board works as expected.

2 out of 5 eggsDefective. (Getting a replacement)

Pros: Lightweight, good quality

Cons: Only has one PCI Express slot, And did not boot correctly.

Other Thoughts: I was so excited to get this product and a few others I had ordered recently. I was going to build a new PC with this motherboard, and an Intel Xeon E3-1240 V3 Processor, but when I booted, the computer would start then shutdown. At the same time making a familiar noise, that I had heard earlier in life, indicating the motherboard has a problem. It's an electrical click like noise before the computer shuts down. I tested all the parts, including the power supply unit, the processor, and the motherboard. Turns out all work except for the motherboard. I will be getting a replacement. I hope this new Mobo works. Otherwise it's a waste of money.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Choice

Pros: I highly recommend this board. I work for a professional design firm, and over the years have also become the de facto builder/keeper of the company's CADD workstations and administrative computers. I purchased this board to build a new word- processing/graphics machine in an old Lian Li ATX case that formerly housed an aging LGA 777/955X/Windows XP system which was lagging behind the curve. Among the features I look for in a motherboard are functionality, stability, durability, simplicity, and the capacity to upgrade as requirements change – essentially a computer that will run a variety of productivity applications all day every day, over time, without calling attention to itself. The Gigabyte Z87-DS3H seems meet all these criteria in a simple straightforward manner.

The Z87-DS3H has an ATX form factor, but the layout is compact and efficient, resulting in a board that is a full 1-1/2” narrower than the board it replaced, leaving lots of breathing room in the case. This system went together easily and quickly, without a hitch. Unlike another reviewer, I found no issues when installing a pair of prior-approved memory modules – it should be noted that the DDR3 memory slots #1 and #2 are not directly adjacent to each other (slot #3 is between them) – just as described in the User's Manual. All the other components and connections installed without any issues. The board's spec.s are well-suited to any contemporary mainstream system, including the on-board graphics and audio – for a more specialized setup for higher-end systems, there's adequate room for upgrade and expansion. The UEFI “Dashboard” is a little gimmicky for my own taste, but it works fine (and there's the option to switch to a “Classic” BIOS for us stodgier types).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Don't let a few “bad eggs” dissuade you from considering this board. They quit using old Scandinavian craftsmen to solder hand-made parts onto circuit boards a long time ago, and any mass-produced equipment will be prone to a few units here and there that mis-fire. This is a well-conceived board with excellent spec.s from a reputable company, and I anticipate having it around as a daily workhorse for a long time yet to come.
