5 out of 5 eggsExcellent board

Pros: 32 GB High speed RAM supported
PCI E 3 with 8x USB 3 and 2x Thunderbolt 2
Supports an i5 4690K and solid/easy overclocking
9 SATA III ports with hardware RAID options
Easy install with good documentation

Cons: Thunderbolt 2 still giving me hiccups, wished it was plug & play (not really mobo problem tho, my OS knows what the devices are, just doesn't see HDDs) - I would like more info on the BIOS Thunderbolt 2 settings, the manual is very vague.

Other Thoughts: This was just under $200 for me. It's easy to install, easy to work with. The best looking BIOS I've used, if anything over-the-top "stylish". The manual helps a lot, which is in pdf form at OC'ing has been easy with the Gigabyte Windows 7 Utility.

I tried using the app center to update itself, but it maxed at under 100 kb/s even when was giving me 115 Mb/s

Used the @BIOS app to flash from a file.F4, downloaded from Gigabyte Support which went well. Had version 2, went to latest version 4. Tried to update from server which crashed 4 times.

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATE TO: USB 3 ports working only as USB 2

Pros: Newegg reviewer: Please replace my previous with this one. Thanks. Like the BIOS setup/interface, number of 3.0 ports and capability to add 3.0 to front header. The board layout is nice and all connections are labeled and in a decent size font. Like the on board test buttons. Documentation is also up to par.

Cons: None at this time. Good board with good setup documentation.

5 out of 5 eggsSolod Z97 Platform

Pros: Quickest, easiest build I’ve put together to date. Build consisted of:

PSU: Seasonic Platinum 1200
CPU: i7-4790S
CPU cooler: ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT
Memory: G.SKILL F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL
Drives: 2x Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
Video: EVGA GeForce GTX780 3GB GDDR5 384bit
OS: Dual boot Win7Pro/Ubuntu Studio

This build went so smooth it probably only took an hour to get to the point where I was putting the Win7 disc in the tray. From there it was all downhill; no stumbles at all with windows or Linux. Recognized all the hardware, and no driver issues.

As far as performance in Win7, it’s all 7.7s without any over-clocking.

As far as temps, the 65W CPU is steady @ 36C. And this temp is before the chip has had time to seat with the paste, and for paste all I used was brush on stuff that comes with Zalman.

The bundled utilities are functional, and all function as described.

Cons: The firmware had to updated from F2 to F4. Seriously, that’s the worst thing I could come up with.

But Gigabyte makes it as simple as it can be; download the file, and run the @BIOS utility in Windows.

Also, with my build, the BIOS AUTO recognized the DDR3-1600 as DDR3-1333, so you have to manually set it to 1600.

Other Thoughts: I built this system as a 24/192 music server, and for that purpose it is the best board I found. Using an external Teac DAC, the USB ports on this board are very low noise; lossless music is clear as a bell.

If you do any recording, the new Avid Pro Tools interface box is Thunderbolt, so it will work with this board. And other Thunderbolt devices start showing up on the market, this board should have a good lifespan.

Also, the onboard graphics does run simultaneously with whatever PCIe video card you are running. Nice bonus if you have an LCD built into your case.

The only reason not to go with this board would be if you are waiting for either Broadwell (Die shrink to 14 nano) or Skylake (New microarchitecture, LGA 1151). Both of which will be using DDR4.

Now that it’s all together and I see what a solid board this is, I will be upping the memory to 32Gb.
