forget windows
- Pros: fine for a low-end board. not a screamer, but it does the job.
- Cons: Oh my... after first trying to get it going as a linux server, with raided HD's, etc., I finally gave up after trying every solution i could find online. Seemed linux wasn't quite ready for the nvidia drivers. The was back in Feb' 08. Then tried XP pro, only to get blue screen after blue screen. All i could figure was it was either a memory/hardware, memory software, CPU cooling, or ??? Single-channel memory was kind of a surprise, my bad for not doing my homework.
- Other Thoughts: The board went to the closet for a while. I resurrected it, changed the processor, implemented a fan directly on the CPU cooler, (which already had its own fans), thinking it may be problematic, got it going, this time on Mandriva, absolultely no crashes. Nothin at all against Mandriva, but i began trying other distros & ended up on Dreamlinux. Runs like a....you know. Added an ATI 1550 VGA card, do an apt get ATI-install, (or subst. nvidia if you go with on-board vid.). Got sound working with ASLA drivers. probably won't be doing RAID, but likely could.
poor chipset for raid - update
- Pros: I was able to return it
- Cons: Raid is utterly non-functional.
I'm not sure whether this is the known defect-by-design, in that the board mfg selected a chipset known to not implement the required functions correctly, or if this particular unit is more broken than most.
I was never able to get XP to load using the mfg provided raid drivers. XP Setup simply refused to recognize them.
And yes, Virginia - I know how to make a boot floppy and supply the mass storage drivers during setup.
I tried going with a pata optical, no change. Flashed bios to latest version - no change.
I decided to give up on the nvidia chipset, and went with an intel board instead.
With the Intel board, setup was uneventful - highest praise I can give to hardware.
No need to use a pata optical, I was able to return to all sata.
- Other Thoughts: Choose this board if you will never need raid, and will never use a sata optical drive, or if you really love the color blue.
poor chipset for raid
- Pros: Inexpensive, nice sata raid features - on paper...
- Cons: Nvidia chipset.
Because there are serious known issues with the nvidia chipset and sata optical drives, it's not possible to build an all sata XP box from scratch based on this board. Nvidia's solution is straight out of the Marx Brothers: "Doc - it hurts when I do this" Groucho: "Don't do that." Basically, if you have a sata optical drive, you can't load the nvidia drivers - and you can't do bootable raid without them. Last custom box I bought locally, the builder warned me against non-Intel chipsets for onboard raid. He was right. I put an ide optical drive in to test - still can't run xp setup - F6 refuses to copy the files, even though they are recognized - and without them I get a bsod.
- Other Thoughts: What really annoys me is that Nvidia is quite aware of the problem, and has no solution.
Their workaround is to turn the raid functionality off, which is unacceptable, or to use an ide optical drive, which is equally unacceptable. I didn't buy this from NewEgg - I needed to put another box together quickly, so I purchased locally. No more nvidia for me!
