5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget board

Pros: Lived up to all my expectations. Fast, low power usage, relatively easy to configure. I like the on-board power switch - it was useful while I was still building the system.

Cons: Like most micro ATX boards, the PCIe graphics card heat sink covers one of the PCIe 1x slots. I wish MSI provided a small utility gadget for monitoring the temperature - I don't like having to load up the full overclocking console utility to see how hot my CPU is.

Other Thoughts: I built this system back in February for video editing, and it's been rock solid. I'm running it at stock speed, and I'm able to compress SD footage to MPEG-2 at about 120 frames per second while drawing only about 100W.

I was using the on-board audio until about a month ago. I never had any problems with it, but I needed a hardware MIDI synth for sequencing and decided to add the Sound Blaster.

My configuration:
- OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W PSU
- Core i5-750 quad-core CPU
- 4GB RAM (Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600 2GB x 2)
- MSI N210-MD512H video card
- SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium
- 2x 640GB Western Digital HDD
- Generic IDE DVD-RW
- Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: + Decent layout
+ Wasn't DOA

Cons: - None so far
- Image on boot up..... I mean come on!!! It looks like cr@p!

Other Thoughts: The placement of the PCI Express slot is dangerously close to the RAM. Not a huge deal since I'm not taking out my RAM every day. Haven't tried overclocking yet so I can't comment on that.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Motherboard

Pros: This is a solid motherboard with ALOT features! Support for I7 and 1333Mhz+ DDR3 ram is a seller. Also, i've owned many MSI boards and have not had any complaints. Also, solid capacitors can set you at ease for both reliability and durability. They run cool and efficient as well. I c0-own a IT business and I would sell this to anyone including family.

Cons: Not really a con, but I wish it supported more than 16GB ram.

Other Thoughts: For the price, this is a no brainer.

3 out of 5 eggsKnow what you are getting into

Pros: The directions are very clear as to where everything plugs in. It has a good number of motherboard features for the price.

Cons: This did not work with the i5 processor out of the box. I had to diagnose the issue (computer restarting constantly), and find the solution (flash the bios) alone. The MSI website was not helpful in any way. Even MSI's directions to flash the bios directed me to use a floppy disc.

There is also an issue with dual channel RAM not working in the designated slots (haven't found a solution yet).

Other Thoughts: This is a good motherboard, and the price is right. Just be warned that you may have to spend some time fixing problems before your computer even boots.

4 out of 5 eggsOC Genie and eSATA

Pros: This is a wonderful motherboard which gives one 2 PCIE slots at a Micro-ATX board size

Cons: OC Genie is a good feature, just that I did not see it to be anyway useful. (since OC folks like me just do it with our +/- key)

eSATA does not support hot-swap. I try to solve this issue but no go. The BIOS may be the problem. I have not try the latest BIOS, wish it will fix it.

Other Thoughts: Good board overall, just the Realtek chipset is the cheap ones instead of others which support Dolby realtime decoding.
Don't use IDE Disk Drive unless you have to.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Waste Your Time

Pros: None Yet

Cons: Motherboard powers up then down. Spoke with MSI Tech. Says BIOS was not updated to support I5 750 Processor. Have to submit RMA and pay for shipping. If you had any rebates, good luck with that as well.

Other Thoughts: Should've stuck with ASUS

3 out of 5 eggsWould not boot from any startup disc

Pros: Easy setup
Recognized everything (peripherals, RAM) without any headache

Cons: Motherboard would NOT bootup from any Windows DVD, or USB boot drives. Even MSI's included Linux-based OS would not boot without. I tried resetting the CMOS, upgrading BIOS, downgrading BIOS, different SATA slots, etc. Nothing worked, even though both the hard drive and DVD drive were recognized in the BIOS. I ended up having to RMA; hopefully the next one works properly.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Motherboard, Great Value

Pros: - Plethora of USB and other backplane ports
- OC Genie actually works and makes a basic overclock a breese to do. If I wanted to I could spend the time to tweak every setting, but when I can change one quick setting and get a 500 MHz overclock, that's just fantastic.
-Stability; in the 6 months that I've had this board I have not had a single crash, and everything has worked like a dream.
-Plenty of room for expansion; this board has a good layout and includes PCI-Express x16 in a micro form factor along with RAID and other forward features. I think it'll end up lasting me quite sometime.
-Fits great in a thermaltake lanbox lite case

Cons: It would have been nice if they had a clear CMOS button on the backplane like Asus has on some of their newer boards. Occasionally when I've strained the overclock I've had to clear the CMOS with the jumper, but it's not too big of a deal (mostly it's just old school). But for a $120 board (originally), I'd say this has more than enough to be happy about.

Other Thoughts: I've worked and owned plenty of motherboards in my lifetime, but the MSI-GD45 is definitely one of the best ever. It's been rock-stable and has all the features I wanted in a micro-atx board. In the 6 months I've had no issues with it, and as a result It gets the full 5 eggs from me.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Over-Current Protection in BIOS - Overclockers Beware

Pros: Most likely a great motherboard at stock clock. Lots of USB Ports

Cons: OVERCLOCKERS: YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

Absolutely NO protection in the BIOS for over-current from mild overclocks. I overclocked my i7-860 to a petty 3.6 GHz. As soon as I put a load on all the cores, the CPU actually draws more watts than the motherboard is capable of delivering, regardless of PSU wattage used. So what does the BIOS do to prevent this and protect the motherboard? Absolutely NOTHING. Result? FIRE (FLAMES) SHOOTING out of the Dr.MOS Power Phase heatsink when trying to startup. A motherboard 4th of July show in April, ONLY when it was placed under a full CPU load.

Other Thoughts: This is a P55 budget board issue not isolated to just MSI budget P55 boards but others as well. It was however, corrected by ASRock in their P55 mATX board with a simple BIOS update. How do I know this? Toms Hardware site has an article about "The Perils of Overclocking a P55 Motherboard". I wish I would have read it sooner. LOL

Newegg rocks as usual.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfied so far

Pros: -10 USB ports
-Stable board as of right now
-Good Bios features
-Supported my old raid0 setup right out of the box (I didn't trust it and did a fresh install of Windows 7)
-Lots of room around the processor for aftermarket cooling without adversely affecting ram. However if your aftermarket cpu cooler is really wide, may cut it close with the first pci express slot. (Zerotherm core92 fits perfectly)
-Sata connectors conveniently placed.
-Great board, runs like it's more expensive counterparts for a great price.

Cons: -High end graphics card covers opened ram locking mechanism. Can lift the card slightly from the end without removing it and use them easily though. When removing ram I just use the top clips and forget about the ones under the card.
-IF you're using an IDE connection, You're going to need to get crafty positioning the cable so it will 1) reach the connector which is on the bottom left of the board and 2) position it so it won't affect airflow. These are cons for me because I'm using this micro board in a full size tower. Had to get a 34" ide cable so I could maneuver it around fans. Eventually just said screw it since windows 7 didn't want to install with any of my ide cd drives. (PS Windows 7 won't install on my Plextors, works on lighytscribe just fine though)

Other Thoughts: I'm not a big overclocker, in fact I honestly struggle just changing ram settings. I don't like to get my hands dirty with that stuff. Because of this I can't really remark on the boards overclocking ability. But it's a much more user friendly interface than boards I've used in the past. so I may use the "limited" OC potential a little and experiment. I say limited because of others reviews of it's OC potential. I haven't experienced first hand.

I would definitely recommend this board to all my friends and family. If it craps out on me I'll be back writing another review but until then I'm very satisfied.

-Twin 150gb raptors Raid0
-Coolermaster Cosmos Case
