5 out of 5 eggsVery stable and easy to install

Pros: Very well designed for dual CPU's. Comes with 2 mirrored CPU coolers that are way to install. RAID is actual hardware RAID and can tie in to the IDE drives as well. Can be over clocked easy. Lots of extras. SLI came enabled and works very well for me. Ram cooler helps with over clocking. If you read the requirements for the AMD Opteron proc's you will be fine. NIC's are stable and the onboard audio is great. Came with a Blankout that holds the SLI bridge in place.

Cons: There is only one PCI slot, and 1 PCI-X slot. The USB connectors are at the bottom of the board and I had to route them round my video cards for the back connectors and the front connectors are a bit far as well. The intruction book could be a bit more clear.

Other Thoughts: Very well designed board. Rembmer with the Opteron cpu's you need Reg-ECC RAM installed or it wont work, and you have to make sure you dont go above the speed that your CPU can handel. Also you need 20+Amps on the 12v Rail. I would stay away from the dual 12v rail cpu's. And you will be good to go :D

2 out of 5 eggsPoor quality, bad service, and unstable

Pros: I purchased five of these motherboards from NewEgg in one order. As usual, NewEgg's shipment was prompt and fast; I received the motherboards within three days.

The MSI K8N Master2-Far is one of the more affordable dual-socket 940 motherboards that are available. It also has a relatively compact form-factor that makes it easy to use in a wide range of server cases. That, however, is where the positive attributes of the MSI K8N Master2-FAR end. The rest of the MSI K8N Master2-FAR experience is a nightmare.

Cons: Of the five MSI K8n Master2-Far motherboards that I purchased, two arrived DOA. Of the three remaining motherboards, two kept hanging on POST -- turns out they had shipped with an out-dated BIOS. Oddly enough, the most up-to-date BIOS is _not_ available from the MSI website. Instead, I had to hunt-down a German MSI forum with a link burried to the latest BIOS. None of the MSI tech support people I contacted were able provide me with access to the latest BIOS.

These motherboards are also extreemly unstable with all 6 DIMM sockets populated. Because of this, I have not been able to make use of more than 4 DIMM's on any of my motherboards.

MSI provided me with an RMA for the 2 DOA boards within 2 hours of me submitting a ticket. I shipped the boards out next-day-air to MSI. It has been over three weeks since I shipped the defective boards out, and I am still waiting!

These boards have terrible quality, poor documentation, lousy support, and awful RMA service.

Other Thoughts: You may save some money up-front with these boards, but that will be more than offset by the poor quality, terrible service, and unstable operation. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $

4 out of 5 eggsGreat once it got running

Pros: Great MOBO to expand yourself on. Up to 12 GB of RAM(nobody's EVER going to need...) 2 Processors, and SLI, you can spend a lot or a little on this. The Only price hog is that you need registered RAM, which can hurt you in the pocketbook. I bought the circuit boards of the system for under $1000 though(MOBO, CPU, RAM, & VC)

THe thing NEVER crashes! I had lots of issues with BSODs on my older system, which I will chalk up to either CPU, or more likely RAM. Since I got this new system put together in early Jan, It "Crashed" once, freezing up. otherwise, reboots happen due to software issues, no hardware problems to speak of.

Cons: The system did not like to be installed immediately. it kept crashing as windows loaded. once i finally danced around the installation and got MSI on over Email, we found out that the system had shipped out with the wrong BIOS installed.(version 1.21, the latest was 1.1. Got that worked around, and aside from the VD not liking its factory driver, the system ran smoothly from there.

THe only real other complaint is the lack of PCI slots. Although I realize that this was physically impossible due to the size and space requirements of the motherboard, SATA RAID controllers and soundcards still run on PCI for the most part. Users: call for a revolution!!!

Other Thoughts: Would I buy this board again??? Absolutely! Its an excellent buy for a guy who multitasks and games on the side(thats me) I can let Audacity run in the background and be playing oblivion full on, and not have much lag. imagine what 2 dual cores could do...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Photoshop monster

Pros: This board is fitted out for basic server or workstation use. Heavy mod freaks won't like the fact that you have to use the included CPU fans, the mount is different from the standard AMD mount. It supports SATA, I've got a couple of RAID1 arrays, and the board has extra system fan connectors so you can push it pretty hard.

A perfect Photoshop setup, two Opteron 270's and 8GB let Photoshop really stretch outon XP 64 bit!

With a terabyte of RAID storage you can keep most of your work live and local, on secure RAID arrays. It has what you need, no frills. That's good, because if it isn't there, it won't break!!

Cons: The board can be fussy about drives; the primary slave has to be the hard drive, not an optical drive. No big deal, but a bit of a fuss to figure out. It also can hang on detecting the RAID arrays with the included driver, updating the driver and/o BIOS is no big deal but it's anoither step. The SLI card arrived set up for two video cards, if you're using only one card it can be tricky to figure out what's wrong!

Other Thoughts: Get ready for 64 bit computing, it's coming down the pike. This board seems to be ideal for an XP 64 bit setup, just don't expect to connect a whole lot of expansion cards. It really IS a server/workstation board. Well worth the price.

3 out of 5 eggsA fantastic board... with issues.

Pros: Dual CPU, SLI compatibility and a wealth of features. The board is a strong performer and packs a punch!

Cons: ... but the performance comes with a price. The motherboard's layout is very crowded, with large capacitors sitting next to the 940 CPU slots. It's exceptionally difficult to mount a CPU fan without having to bend the capacitors to the site just to get the mounting brackets in. The second CPU slot is also perilously close to the primary PCI-E slot.

Other Thoughts: This is a great board. This board is NOT compatible with most third party cooling fans due to the horrible layout of the capacitors on the motherboard. Plan on relying on stock heatsinks. Theres's not much in the way of excellent cooling/quiet alternatives.

4 out of 5 eggsDouble Check Your Opteron's!

Pros: The only SLI dual processor mobo currently on the market

Cons: Limited room for expansion when running two SLI graphics cards

Other Thoughts: According to MSI's web site, this mobo is rated up to the Opteron 275. If you install Opteron 280's (as my custom PC manufacturer did), you will find out that the mobo can't provide enough voltage to run the 280's at their rated capacity, causing system failure when under high load. It took removing two transisters and configuring a custom BIOS to get the mobo to work (and work well) with the 280s...this time running at 2.6 GHz. MSI is aware of the issue and probably (hopefully) going to make modifications to future mobo's. Hopefully

4 out of 5 eggsGood board...Bad Quality

Pros: First let me re-rate to 3.5 eggs. Dual CPU, Good chipset.Excellent platform for a average to high end workstation.SLI, 6 mem slots, free heatsinks and fans.Raid support(which I don't use currently)Tweakable BIOS.

Cons: Bad Layout, forces cables to be disruptive to cooling air flow.
Cheap chipset fan, memory cooling fan almost useless. Audio in-operative out of the box. 4x PCI almost useless. Almost no tech support on website.

Other Thoughts: Would like to see better testing at the factory. MSI could have had a winner if a little more thought went into this board. Should have went Tyan.
