OC Certified

OC Certified is a military class burn-in test for motherboards. Running Prime95 for over 24 hours with a highly overclocked CPU is already a stressing endeavor, but removing all airflow from the motherboard ensures that only the best motherboards survive. If an XPOWER can survive this, it can survive any overclocking situation. The MSI Z87 XPOWER motherboards are equipped with all the necessary features to make sure you get the most out of your system. From the Enhanced PWM and Thermal Design that give you the best stability to all the easy features that ensure that you don't have to perform a lot of tricks to get great stability in your quest for performance.

Military Class 4 Components

Military Class 4 is the next step in high quality components. The DrMOS 4, Hi-c CAP, Super Ferrite Choke and Dark CAP will make sure that your PC runs more stable under extreme conditions.

DrMOS 4

DrMOS 4 is the next-gen Mosfet which is used to deliver the power for the CPU. MSI DrMOS 4 does not waste much power, stays cool and is more power efficient than other powersaving solutions. Because DrMOS 4 is a 3-in-1 chip, it delivers much more power with less components needed. This solution gives you the power to break world records.

Dark CAP

With their aluminum core design, Dark CAP's have been a staple in high-end motherboard design and provides lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as its over-10-year lifespan.

Hi-c CAP

A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-c CAP`s MSI motherboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

Super Ferrite Choke

Super Ferrite Choke uses a Ferrite core that is Super-Permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Choke to run at a 35 degree Celsius lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.

OC PCB

The OC PCB used for the MSI overclocking motherboards is a completely new design where 50% more layers are used. This allows us to optimize all traces for overclocking. Power and signal traces are isolated, resulting in higher efficiency and performance and more features can be installed relatively close to each other without causing interference. Every MSI overclocking motherboard is tuned for better stability under extreme circumstances:
  • Increased number of PCB layers
  • Increased humidity resistance
  • Tight weave fiberglass PCB
  • Increased ESD protection

DigitALL Power PWM

DigitALL Power digitally steers and receives feedback through a DigitALL PWM controller. This allows for pinpoint voltage delivery and lower power consumption. With the switch from analog feedback to digital feedback, you also have the opportunity to implement Load Line Calibration.

Thermal Design

Besides inspiring visual awe the XPOWER Thermal Design was developed to deliver the highest cooling potential in the worst situation. Because it is optimized to work in low-airflow situations, it is the ideal cooling to use with your liquid cooling setup.
  • XPOWER thermal design
  • SuperPipe
  • Low airflow
  • Optimized design
  • Clear CPU space
  • Metal screws

Extreme OC Socket Design

What is more frustrating than not being able to properly fit your cooling solution on your motherboard? Through the use of Military Class 4 components we can ensure that normal coolers can easily be installed and the motherboard can easily be insulated for extreme cooling solutions.

OC Essentials

A small set of tools that are essential to get the best performance out of your motherboard. These features increase stability, assist in trouble shooting, allow you to keep your complete system in check and allow for simple management. This way you can keep your mind on overclocking.

Direct OC

A set of + and – buttons allows you to adjust your Base Clock in real time, even during benchmarking. The DirectOC software allows you to select 1 MHz or 0.1 MHz increments.

Complete Discharge

A true factory reset! Holding this button for two seconds completely wipes your motherboard from all settings. The CLR CMOS button only limits itself to the BIOS/VRAM but this Complete Discharge button even removes information from the Z87 PCH, a much needed button on the Z87 platform.

Optimized for Multiple Graphics Cards

MSI overclocking motherboards feature one or more PCI-Express 3.0 slots, perfectly aligned and with enough space for an optimal airflow when using multiple graphics cards. That way, you will never have to worry about an overheating PC, while you are enjoying the best graphics jumping off from your monitor when running an NVIDIAR SLI or AMD Crossfire gaming setup.

Dedicated PCI-E x16 Slot

The Z87 XPOWER comes with a PLX-chip to enable 4-Way SLI / Crossfire. However in the situations that you only use one VGA card the PLX chip will some latency. This is why thie Z87 XPOWER comes with a dedicated PCI-E x16 slot which is directly connected to the CPU bypassing the PLX chip giving you the best possible performance when using only one VGA card.
*There are four (two front / two back) PCI-E signal switches for each PCI-E x8 lanes from the CPU.

Four-Way SLI / Crossfire

To support 4-Way SLI / Crossifire the Z87 XPOWER is using the PLX8747 gen3 switch chip. This way you have the maximum available bandwidth needed in order to run your benchmarks and game with four VGA cards.

Ceasefire

When you are overclocking with LN2 with four VGA cards, you may want to remove one. However, this can be very difficult. With MSI CeaseFire it's unbelievably easy to disable one of the PCI-E x16 slots using a simple switch.

Supports DDR3-3000 Memory

If you want to achieve overclocking records you also need fast memory. The XPOWER not only supports the new T-Topology architecture, it also works with the latest DDR3-3000 standards. This way you are ensured of the best memory performance.

Audio Boost

Reward your ears with true quality. Get ready for mind-blowing sound, with MSI Audio Boost! With Audio Boost we're delivering the highest audio quality so you can enjoy crystal clear sound and music in games. Because the complete audio circuitry is isolated from other features, you'll enjoy less interference and more stability. The built-in headphone amplifier allows you to use studio-grade headgear and get the most amazing sound quality out of your gaming PC.
  • Studio level integrated 600O headphone amplifier
  • Golden audio jacks for pure audio signals
  • EMI shielded audio codec
  • High quality audio capacitors
  • Illuminated audio PCB separation

INTEL Wi-Fi. Bluetooth. Intel WiDi.

Overclocking motherboards come with an easily unpluggable Intel Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module which also supports Intel WiDi. This way you can easy connect to other wireless devices in your home. The support of 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 ensures that you have the fastest available transfer speed. With Intel WiDi (stands for Wireless Display) and a WiDi receiver (not included) you can watch movies on your TV without the need for any cables.

3 out of 5 eggsBe Aware before ordering this MB

Pros: Can't say, at this point.

Cons: First MB received had component damage (capacitor in front of ATX power connector was dented, but not scratched, and one lead torn loose from mounting pad). Packaging showed no signs of any damage.

RMA'd to Newegg for replacement.

Replacement received in good order. Installed and all connections made. Power applied. NO POST!

Online research indicated possible incompatibility problem with MB BIOS rev. and CPU Model. Contacted MSI and was advised that was true. MB BIOS rev. MUST BE 1.5 (or later) in order to recognize the Intel Core i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I74790K CPU.

Basically, the MB does not recognize that any CPU is installed, and therefore cannot/will not POST.

MB is now being RMA'd to MSI for update to BIOS. Other choices, as advised by MSI, buy a supported CPU and upgrade the BIOS through that means/method. Or find a local shop and have them upgrade the BIOS. In any regard, as the board WILL NOT POST, this is not something you can do for yourself!

Other Thoughts: System config., new build.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA; Trying again with RMA

Pros: -Tremendous connectivity
-Supports 4 GPU on Z87 chip set
-On-board WiDi/BT
-Robust power delivery to OC'd CPU and GPU via additional 6 and 8 pin connectors
-Compatibility with Haswell and Haswell-R CPUs

Cons: Board did not POST upon initial set-up with specs in "Other thoughts" below. All parts are known to work. Going to RMA and hope the second board works as expected.

Other Thoughts: Trouble shooting started with removing all GPUs and plugged monitor directly into the MB. Exchanged cpu for Celeron G 1840 (non-Haswell-R) and still no POST. Exchanged RAM for Corsair XMS "approved" stick and still no POST. Tried with both the SSD connected and unconnected to MB with same result.

Each time the board will light up, CPU fans will spin up, but no splash screen. On board debug LED show 00, which is not identified in the manual, but online searches show that it is either a possible short or the psu is faulty.

Intended System Specs:
i7 4790K
3X EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX
OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD
HyperX Fury DDR3 4GB x2 1600 Ram
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 PSU

Trouble-shooting System Specs:
Intel Celeron G1840
Corsair XMS3 8 GB 1333MHz ram/HyperX ram from above specs
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 psu

End goal is for this machine to be dedicated to running Folding @ Home 24/7. Recently I installed a custom loop water cooling setup to keep thermals from the 780s and i7 in check. I am looking forward to when I can power up the system again continue to contribute to the F@H effort and community.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board 4 me.

Pros: The biggest pro is power to cpu sideways connection much easier to connect when using large twin fan cooler, major plus and I use a Lian li large case. First I was using a Mpower max A/C which is a good board but no comparison. I don't understand all the negative ratings and hign ratings on other msi board that share the same chipset. The lay out is great I love the led lighting on the audio divided circuit. The fading "X" on the board looks cool too. The board started up on the first try no weird boot reboot issues like some Gigabyte boards. The same overclock on my I7 4770k used a lower voltage with exact same settings as Mpower max A/C, lower voltage, cooler processor, awesome.

Cons: None just yet it is early but I am confident in MSI.

Other Thoughts: My setup I7 4770k, Xpower board of course EVGA GTX980 reference SC. ddr3 2400 adata memory. Lg blu ray drive zalfan fan controller with six zalman fans. Evga super nova 1300g2 overkill but I was running two 780TI's in SLI. Hard drive a Samsung EVO 850 . This board is a steal for this price by it before it is gone.

1 out of 5 eggsIncredible disappointment

Pros: Nice looking board

Cons: The board arrived DOA. Did a dry-run outside the case, wearing an anti-static wristband, all that business, and after the CPU, heatsink, RAM, GPU were all in, I plugged in the PSU and powered up. The board lights up, fans spin on the GPU, heatsink, etc. but no image is displayed, can't reach the BIOS. Tried removing all components, reseating CPU, different PSU, using mobo hdmi port.

Nothing I thought of, or was able to find online made a difference, guess its time to RMA and hope the next one actually works. Unless MSI customer support has a different solution.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Looks great.

Cons: DOA. I bought this board about 9 months ago and never opened it as I decided to go with a 2011 socket in the middle of the build. I decided it was a good board to have laying around. finally one day I decided to give it away to someone who wanted to build a computer for the first time. I helped him build it and when it started all I get is debug code A0. upon further research this happens to a lot of these boards. Sucks... I paid 389$ for this board and it doesn't work, not to mention the lame warranty. 30 days... from invoice. again sucks...

5 out of 5 eggsdat board

Pros: very sexy looking board, if case is windowed you get to see the glory of msi, the board is sleek and stays a nasty chilly 30c at all times , have a 4770 oc to4.5 using the bios , which is hands down the easiest way to OC on this board

Cons: price :/

Other Thoughts: if this were a beautiful woman i would marry her, then divorce her just so i can tell everyone i was with her

5 out of 5 eggsReply to manufactures response.

Pros: **

Cons: **

Other Thoughts: I'm sorry that I couldn't reply on the last review I posted after the manufacture replied. I've moved to another manufacture's board and very happy with my decision. I don't want to discourage other buyers from your company, just my opinion, spending my hard earned money and time wasted on your product.

1 out of 5 eggsDead in less than a year

Pros: It worked most of the time, never crashed playing BF4.

Cons: Letting it sit idling it would loose the hard drive, later on it lost the soundblaster z and intel pci-e network card. Tried a bios update and bricked the chip. tried an older bios flash on the other chip and bricked it also. I updated this bios several times and the latest updates must be corrupt. There's no bailing out of that, period. After talking to tech support they agreed I needed an RMA, how ever I had to pay for shipping, I thought why would I put more money into this after all the trouble it has caused. I kindly told tech support, never mind, I'll just buy a different brand and hung up. New motherboard will be here tuesday.

Other Thoughts: Discontinuing this board was a smart move.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsWasted Money

Pros: None.

Cons: I'm blaming Newegg on this one, as the pins came bent (of course they denied it) and when they shipped it back it was more broke than before, with a transistor/resistor/little black nub broken off and scotch taped on the board itself. ?!!

Finding a new retailer will be simple. This place is a joke if you ever have a problem with them.

As for MSI, their tech support customer assistance is a joke. You wait 30+ minutes on hold and just give up. It it wasn't for speakerphone, it wouldn't have lasted that long.
