OC Certified

OC Certified is a military class burn-in test for motherboards. Running Prime95 for over 24 hours with a highly overclocked CPU is already a stressing endeavor, but removing all airflow from the motherboard ensures that only the best motherboards survive. If an XPOWER can survive this, it can survive any overclocking situation. The MSI Z87 XPOWER motherboards are equipped with all the necessary features to make sure you get the most out of your system. From the Enhanced PWM and Thermal Design that give you the best stability to all the easy features that ensure that you don't have to perform a lot of tricks to get great stability in your quest for performance.

Military Class 4 Components

Military Class 4 is the next step in high quality components. The DrMOS 4, Hi-c CAP, Super Ferrite Choke and Dark CAP will make sure that your PC runs more stable under extreme conditions.

DrMOS 4

DrMOS 4 is the next-gen Mosfet which is used to deliver the power for the CPU. MSI DrMOS 4 does not waste much power, stays cool and is more power efficient than other powersaving solutions. Because DrMOS 4 is a 3-in-1 chip, it delivers much more power with less components needed. This solution gives you the power to break world records.

Dark CAP

With their aluminum core design, Dark CAP's have been a staple in high-end motherboard design and provides lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as its over-10-year lifespan.

Hi-c CAP

A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-c CAP`s MSI motherboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

Super Ferrite Choke

Super Ferrite Choke uses a Ferrite core that is Super-Permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Choke to run at a 35 degree Celsius lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.

OC PCB

The OC PCB used for the MSI overclocking motherboards is a completely new design where 50% more layers are used. This allows us to optimize all traces for overclocking. Power and signal traces are isolated, resulting in higher efficiency and performance and more features can be installed relatively close to each other without causing interference. Every MSI overclocking motherboard is tuned for better stability under extreme circumstances:
  • Increased number of PCB layers
  • Increased humidity resistance
  • Tight weave fiberglass PCB
  • Increased ESD protection

DigitALL Power PWM

DigitALL Power digitally steers and receives feedback through a DigitALL PWM controller. This allows for pinpoint voltage delivery and lower power consumption. With the switch from analog feedback to digital feedback, you also have the opportunity to implement Load Line Calibration.

Thermal Design

Besides inspiring visual awe the XPOWER Thermal Design was developed to deliver the highest cooling potential in the worst situation. Because it is optimized to work in low-airflow situations, it is the ideal cooling to use with your liquid cooling setup.
  • XPOWER thermal design
  • SuperPipe
  • Low airflow
  • Optimized design
  • Clear CPU space
  • Metal screws

Extreme OC Socket Design

What is more frustrating than not being able to properly fit your cooling solution on your motherboard? Through the use of Military Class 4 components we can ensure that normal coolers can easily be installed and the motherboard can easily be insulated for extreme cooling solutions.

OC Essentials

A small set of tools that are essential to get the best performance out of your motherboard. These features increase stability, assist in trouble shooting, allow you to keep your complete system in check and allow for simple management. This way you can keep your mind on overclocking.

Direct OC

A set of + and – buttons allows you to adjust your Base Clock in real time, even during benchmarking. The DirectOC software allows you to select 1 MHz or 0.1 MHz increments.

Complete Discharge

A true factory reset! Holding this button for two seconds completely wipes your motherboard from all settings. The CLR CMOS button only limits itself to the BIOS/VRAM but this Complete Discharge button even removes information from the Z87 PCH, a much needed button on the Z87 platform.

Optimized for Multiple Graphics Cards

MSI overclocking motherboards feature one or more PCI-Express 3.0 slots, perfectly aligned and with enough space for an optimal airflow when using multiple graphics cards. That way, you will never have to worry about an overheating PC, while you are enjoying the best graphics jumping off from your monitor when running an NVIDIAR SLI or AMD Crossfire gaming setup.

Dedicated PCI-E x16 Slot

The Z87 XPOWER comes with a PLX-chip to enable 4-Way SLI / Crossfire. However in the situations that you only use one VGA card the PLX chip will some latency. This is why thie Z87 XPOWER comes with a dedicated PCI-E x16 slot which is directly connected to the CPU bypassing the PLX chip giving you the best possible performance when using only one VGA card.
*There are four (two front / two back) PCI-E signal switches for each PCI-E x8 lanes from the CPU.

Four-Way SLI / Crossfire

To support 4-Way SLI / Crossifire the Z87 XPOWER is using the PLX8747 gen3 switch chip. This way you have the maximum available bandwidth needed in order to run your benchmarks and game with four VGA cards.

Ceasefire

When you are overclocking with LN2 with four VGA cards, you may want to remove one. However, this can be very difficult. With MSI CeaseFire it's unbelievably easy to disable one of the PCI-E x16 slots using a simple switch.

Supports DDR3-3000 Memory

If you want to achieve overclocking records you also need fast memory. The XPOWER not only supports the new T-Topology architecture, it also works with the latest DDR3-3000 standards. This way you are ensured of the best memory performance.

Audio Boost

Reward your ears with true quality. Get ready for mind-blowing sound, with MSI Audio Boost! With Audio Boost we're delivering the highest audio quality so you can enjoy crystal clear sound and music in games. Because the complete audio circuitry is isolated from other features, you'll enjoy less interference and more stability. The built-in headphone amplifier allows you to use studio-grade headgear and get the most amazing sound quality out of your gaming PC.
  • Studio level integrated 600O headphone amplifier
  • Golden audio jacks for pure audio signals
  • EMI shielded audio codec
  • High quality audio capacitors
  • Illuminated audio PCB separation

INTEL Wi-Fi. Bluetooth. Intel WiDi.

Overclocking motherboards come with an easily unpluggable Intel Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module which also supports Intel WiDi. This way you can easy connect to other wireless devices in your home. The support of 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 ensures that you have the fastest available transfer speed. With Intel WiDi (stands for Wireless Display) and a WiDi receiver (not included) you can watch movies on your TV without the need for any cables.

5 out of 5 eggsdat board

Pros: very sexy looking board, if case is windowed you get to see the glory of msi, the board is sleek and stays a nasty chilly 30c at all times , have a 4770 oc to4.5 using the bios , which is hands down the easiest way to OC on this board

Cons: price :/

Other Thoughts: if this were a beautiful woman i would marry her, then divorce her just so i can tell everyone i was with her

5 out of 5 eggsReply to manufactures response.

Pros: **

Cons: **

Other Thoughts: I'm sorry that I couldn't reply on the last review I posted after the manufacture replied. I've moved to another manufacture's board and very happy with my decision. I don't want to discourage other buyers from your company, just my opinion, spending my hard earned money and time wasted on your product.

1 out of 5 eggsDead in less than a year

Pros: It worked most of the time, never crashed playing BF4.

Cons: Letting it sit idling it would loose the hard drive, later on it lost the soundblaster z and intel pci-e network card. Tried a bios update and bricked the chip. tried an older bios flash on the other chip and bricked it also. I updated this bios several times and the latest updates must be corrupt. There's no bailing out of that, period. After talking to tech support they agreed I needed an RMA, how ever I had to pay for shipping, I thought why would I put more money into this after all the trouble it has caused. I kindly told tech support, never mind, I'll just buy a different brand and hung up. New motherboard will be here tuesday.

Other Thoughts: Discontinuing this board was a smart move.

1 out of 5 eggsWasted Money

Pros: None.

Cons: I'm blaming Newegg on this one, as the pins came bent (of course they denied it) and when they shipped it back it was more broke than before, with a transistor/resistor/little black nub broken off and scotch taped on the board itself. ?!!

Finding a new retailer will be simple. This place is a joke if you ever have a problem with them.

As for MSI, their tech support customer assistance is a joke. You wait 30+ minutes on hold and just give up. It it wasn't for speakerphone, it wouldn't have lasted that long.

1 out of 5 eggsWasted Money?

Pros: None so far. Error codes are not documented in the support manual or online. Seriously?

Cons: No video on boot. Checked everything three times over. This seems to be a problem with this board according to more than a few forum boards. Also, 'XL"? I should have looked up compatibility as I needed to order another case so this (probable and soon to be) high priced target practice object could fit in it. Not their fault - but really? "XL"? Useless.

Oh, and their tech support doesn't open until 9am? wow... customer service is pretty lacking so far. We'll see and will post a follow-up if things get any better.

And yes, I reseated the ram, reseated the cpu, reseated the sata drives, nothing additional added to the board (no brand new video card I'm dying to try out, etc). Again, lame so far.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard!

Pros: I have no idea where to start. It's been over 8 months, and it is still running great. My Windows Experience Index is overall at 7.8. I could overclock to get the CPU up for an extra 0.1, but I don't see any point to it.

Cons: -I don't care much for the fancy yellow Bios screen. I prefer the classic black screen. I wish I could change the color to something less annoying.

5 out of 5 eggsSpectacular

Pros: Lots of Features
Works great with my Celeron G1820
Windows XP works good
Installed 2gb Ram is plenty
Looks great

Cons: Only two minor downsides:

Wish it had a serial port
Had to install an addon card to get my Floppy Drive to work :(

Other Thoughts: Bottom line: A motherboard with really good value considering the features.

5 out of 5 eggsR U KIDDING ME!?

Pros: PLX8747 Gen3 Switch / Ceasefire / 32 Phase power / Bios

Most of all, It's been rock solid as it should be...Not like the "over-bloated, over-marketed" cheap Asus boards

Cons: Blinky yellow lights, really?...on a board like this...

Other Thoughts: I really can't stand when people will give a bad review to a product when they don't even know how to even use or install it properly...We have built custom machines for many different types of customers who have a certain misguided loyalty or design in mind ( IE: green water cooled w/ green led will go with the Gigabyte Sniper MB because it's green ) which makes some sense. However, when I'm asked who has the most reliable board (most commonly put "who's got the best board") I will reply honestly and say I've had the least amount of problems with MSI hands down...Who has the best customer support in this business?...EVGA, hands down. If you want a motherboard that can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it, then buy the MSI X-POWER

5 out of 5 eggsI was wrong...

Pros: I previously reviewed this product and gave it 1 egg because I received a motherboard that was defective. Now that the replacement board has come (and it came rather quickly), I am revising my prior review (below this one) to 5-egg maximum. The motherboard now works as described and it is working FLAWLESSLY. I am having absolutely ZERO problems with the product now and I couldn't be happier!

I realize that with any consumer product (electronics especially) that defects are the nature of the game. They can happen any time and any place and I jumped the gun on my previous review because I was upset. I now realize I should have waited because this motherboard is spectacular and I love everything about it. It looks incredible. The matte black PCB with matching black and yellow highlight heat sinks make this the best looking motherboard I have ever owned. I'm tired of black and red or blue and white. Other boards are either those colors or crazy colors like black and orange or black and green. Black and yellow on this board just looks fantastic and professional (not that it really matters). The board support SLI, Tri, and Quad-SLI as well as Crossfire, CrossfireX, etc. and does so with no problems as I am currently running three GTX Titan Black cards in triple-SLI with no hiccups (besides the crazy heat three gfx cards produce). This motherboard is a cinch to install big, gigantic heat sinks as well as water cooling components and the board layout is absolutely fantastic.

Many people are complaining about the Killer LAN being faulty or bad or worse than an Intel or Realtek LAN but this just is not the case. Not only does it work wonderfully, but the amount of customization it holds in it's powerful software suite is a networking wet-dream.

The board has ALC 1150 audio codec (the best Realtek audio codec out at time of release) w/ good Creative Labs sound software to enhance the sound even more (you don't have to use it). The amplified headphone jack also helps if you game or listen to music via a good pair of analog headphones. It has an insane amount of USB 3.0 ports and some USB 2.0 ports that also support quick charging to help charge your smartphones or tablets a lot faster than normal USB does. It also includes two USB 2.0 & two USB 3.0 motherboard headers to hook up any USB ports that your case may have as well as extra break-out brackets. You'll never run out of USB ports! It also has 10 SATA-III 6.0Gb/s internal connectors, two BIOS chips, two diferrent overclocking profiles, and a venerable wealth of on-board power, reset, discharge, overclocking buttons and so much more I just cannot list them all!

Oh and this motherboard can overclock with the best of them! The on-board overclocking buttons provide pinpoint precision overclocking (as long as your CPU chip supports it and can handle it). I am currently running my Core i7 4770k @ 4.8Ghz custom water loop and my temps have never exceeded 72°C full load. 32-power phase capability h

Cons: The board could benefit from a 2nd LAN port. Most boards come with 2 LAN ports nowadays, so having the Killer NIC and an Intel NIC on there would have been a welcome bonus.

MSI Command Center software suite that controls fan speed and overclocking in Windows is still a bit buggy. If you want to really get good overclocking results, do it the good way: Through the BIOS

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is one of the best motherboards I have ever used and is, in my new opinion, one of the top three Z87 motherboards you can buy!

SYSTEM SPECS:

Intel Core i7-4770k @ 4.8Ghz (under custom water cooling loop)
MSI z87 XPower Motherboard (BIOS v1.5)
32GB Corsair Dominator PLATINUM DDR3-2400mhz (4 x 8GB)
3x Nvidia GeForce GTX TITAN BLACK (Tri-SLI - under 2nd custom water cooling loop)
CaseLabs TH10 Double Wide Ultra Tower Case
2x Corsair AX1200i Power Supplies
34x Akasa Viper Yellow 120mm PWM Fans

1 out of 5 eggsBoard shorted out, threw sparks, and smoked! Could have caused a fire!!

Pros: The board comes with a wealth of features. 10 SATA III 6.0Gbps ports, 4-way SLI. True 16x PCI-e slot. 16x/16x SLI, 16x/8x/16x Tri-SLI, and 8x/8x/8x/8x Quad-SLI modds available thanks to PLX8747 chipset.

The board is the BEST LOOKING motherboard I've ever owned. LED lights make this motherboard shine bright like a diamond. 32-phase power design. Capability of supplying up to 1920 watts (theoretically) to the CPU (for those overclockers using dry ice or LN2 (liquid nitrogen). The overclocking options on this board are ridiculous (in a great way). Capabilities to monitor hardware are numerous as are the abilities to enable and disable board components via dip switches and on-board hardware buttons. For the price though, they better offer this much stuff!

Cons: I don't know how to say this but this board was DOA. Upon first powering up, the board turned on and then off. It was then that I noticed a funny smell coming from the motherboard. Smelled like burnt eggs. Then one of the mosfets or power VRM chips beneath the giant heatsink began smoking and sizzling. Finally a pop and giant spark rendered the board USELESS. It was NOT any of the other components as I immediately tested every single thing (RAM, POWER SUPPLY, HARD DRIVES, PROCESSOR, etc.) on another, very barebones/simple board and everything worked flawlessly on the other board. Either MSI does not QC (quality check) these boards before leaving the factory or their claims that they test each of these boards is total bogus. I feel I've been downright lied to.

I don't know what caused the board to almost implode on itself but I'm thinking it was the useless looking heatsink. They say its supposed to be designed to operate in low air environments but the heatsink doesn't emply any fins whatsoever. It is basically a big chunky block of copper with another copper or aluminum chunk of top of that. How that makes it better than, or even as good as, other board heatsinks I have NO idea but I just don't see it. I mean, I've never had any other Z87 boards try to burn my house down. This was my first MSI motherboard because I wanted to give them a chance. Unfortunately this may be my last because I think I might go back to Gigabyte (as I trust their products implicitly)!

Other Thoughts: In addition to all the ridiculousness I went through with this board. MSI does NOT offer any kind of advanced RMA or cross shipment options for returning and exchanging this motherboard. In addition, Newegg doesn't accept returns on this board, only exchanges within 30 days (but I can't fault NewEgg when the blame lies strictly with MSI).

As I am sick and recently went through getting both my legs amputated, I wasn't able to start building my new PC until a little over a week ago (I purchased this board back in August/September 2013). I now cannot return or exchange this board for a different model/manufacturer because it is past 30 days.

MSI makes you pay the shipping company to ship the board back to them, so that cost me another 30 dollars which included shipping cost and insurance! Then MSI can take anywhere from 5-20 days to get a replacement product out to you. Couple the fact that ground shipping takes this 5-7 days to get to MSI, then MSI can take up to THREE DAYS before they even open the box and begin the RMA process which can take 5-15 days, then another THREE DAYS to package your replacement and then they ONLY SHIP IT BACK TO YOU USING GROUND (which is ANOTHER 5-7 days). All in all, if you get a defective board, you could possibly be waiting almost an ENTIRE MONTH to get a working board back (and pray the board you get as a replacement is in perfect working order, otherwise, back to step one). Oh yeah, also, they replace your defective item with a REFURBISHED one. They don't even have the dignity to give you a brand new board because, hey, you know, that IS what you originally paid for). All I know is that when I pay hundreds of dollars for a BRAND NEW, top of the line, flagship product that arrives DOA and doesn't even work ONCE, I want it to be replaced with a BRAND NEW version. Not some refurb that's been used by who knows how many people and then replaced with refurbished, USED PARTS. Refurbished is NOT new so don't believe that utter nonsense!

Let's see... what else needs to be said? Oh yeah! They're RMA phone operators are VERY RUDE and try to push you off the phone as fast as possible. They try to talk over me, interrupt me, and then wouldn't even let me say "goodbye" before they disconnected the call. Great way to show some thanks to me for investing in your flagship product.

Unless somebody from MSI makes this right, I'm never purchasing another MSI product again. I was happy with Gigabyte but I thought I'd keep an open mind and give MSI a chance but I'm REALLY starting to regret that horrible mistake right about now.
