Changing the overclocking game

The MSI Z87 MPOWER Max motherboard is equipped with all the necessary features to make sure you get the most out of your system. From the Enhanced PWM and Thermal Design that give you the best stability, to all the easy features that ensure that you don't have to perform a lot of tricks to get great stability in your quest for performance. It is OC certified and can survive any overclocking situation. OC Certified is a military-class burn-in test for motherboards. Running Prime95 for over 24 hours with a highly overclocked CPU is already a stressing endeavor, but removing all airflow from the motherboard ensures that only the best motherboards survive. The MSI Z87 MPOWER Max motherboard is one of the best motherboards.

HIGHLIGHTS

Unleash overclocking potential
The MSI Z87 MPOWER Max comes with an OC PCB with increased number of PCB layers, increased humidity resistance, tight weave fiberglass PCB and increased ESD protection. DigitALL Power digitally steers and receives feedback through a DigitALL PWM controller for pinpoint voltage delivery and lower power consumption. With the switch from analog feedback to digital feedback, you also have the opportunity to implement Load Line Calibration. The MPOWER Thermal Design is optimized to work in low-airflow situations. It is the ideal cooling to use with your liquid cooling setup. With extreme OC socket design, normal coolers can easily be installed and the motherboard can easily be insulated for extreme cooling solutions. MSI Overclocking motherboards are equipped with advanced overclocking software tools to finetune even the smallest OC settings without requiring extra power from your PC. The software tools include Intel Extreme Tuning utility, MSI Command Center LITE and RAMDisk. A small set of tools are also included to allow you to keep your complete system in check and allow for simple management.
MILITARY CLASS 4 COMPONENTS
Military Class 4 is the next step in high quality components. The Hi-c Cap, Super Ferrite Choke and Solid CAPs will make sure that your PC runs more stable under extreme conditions.

HI-C CAP
A Hi-c CAP is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-c CAP`s MSI motherboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

DARK CAP
With their aluminum core design, Dark CAP's have been a staple in high-end motherboard design and provides lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as its over-ten-year lifespan.

SUPER FERRITE CHOKE
Super Ferrite Choke uses a Ferrite core that is Super-Permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Choke to run at a 35 degree Celsius lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.

MILITARY CLASS ESSENTIALS
The core of Military Class 4 is based on the essentials which increase your stability in the toughest conditions. The humidity protection and high temperature protection ensure your system can survive each environment, no matter how harsh. The new structure of the PCB limits EMI radiation. On top of that, all the connectors have ESD protection in order to prevent short circuit.
CLICK BIOS 4
The MSI Click BIOS 4 is the latest UEFI BIOS with optimizations for Windows 8. Not only that, it also reacts faster, runs smoother and has better mouse support. And this all comes with many cool features such as hardware monitor, board explorer and OC profiles preview.

SUPPORTS DDR3-3000 MEMORY

If you want to achieve overclocking records, you also need fast memory. The MPOWER not only supports the new T-Topology architecture, it also works with the latest DDR3-3000 standards. This way you are ensured of the best memory performance.

OPTIMIZED FOR MULTIPLE GRAPHICS CARDS
MSI Overclocking motherboards feature one or more PCI-Express 3.0 slots, perfectly aligned and with enough space for an optimal airflow when using multiple graphics cards. Enjoy the best graphics jumping off from your monitor when running a NVIDIA SLI or AMD Crossfire gaming setup. Lucid Virtu MVP 2.0 is the latest GPU Virtualization technology allowing you to utilize your CPU's integrated Intel HD graphics cores in combination with a powerful discrete graphics card to get more gaming performance! Virtual V-Sync is the most important feature for gamers as it allows you to run at a smooth fixed framerate, without compromising in mouse responsiveness, which is the biggest drawback of traditional V-Sync.
AUDIO BOOST

Reward your ears with true quality. Get ready for ear-drum-shattering sound, with MSI Audio Boost! Because the complete audio circuitry is isolated from other features, you'll enjoy less interference and more stability. The built-in headphone amplifier allows you to use studio-grade headgear and get the most amazing sound quality out of your gaming PC.
  • Studio-level integrated 600Ω headphone amplifier
  • Golden audio jacks for pure audio signals
  • EMI-shielded audio codec
  • High-quality audio capacitors
  • Illuminated audio PCB separation
INTEL WI-FI. BLUETOOTH. INTEL WIDI.
The overclocking motherboards come with an easily unpluggable Intel Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module which also supports Intel WiDi. This way you can easy connect to other wireless devices in your home. The support of 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 ensures that you have the fastest available transfer speed. With Intel WiDi (stands for Wireless Display) and a WiDi receiver (not included), you can watch movies on your TV without the need for any cables.

2 out of 5 eggsMSI Z87 MPOWER Max

Pros: Very expandable. Mounts well. No compatibility issues. Running an 3.5Ghz base clock i7 4770k reliably up to 4.3GHz. Pretty much all the features needed to run an overclocked system using a Z87 chipset. OC Genie makes things easy to overclock.

Cons: Overclocking is confusing and instructions are not written well. Hard to tell how their software works together with the OC Genie buttons on the board itself.
OC Genie lights stopped working on the MOBO after 10 months. Red LED for mode 2 (aggressive) OC no longer lights. Fan speed control for FAN 3 header no longer works. Board does still function. This is supposed to be a burned in military spec board.

Other Thoughts: RMAs take 3 days to record, 5-20 days to process and up to 6 days to return ship. Warranty isn't much good if I have to be without a system for that long. I use this for work and personal business. I cannot be without a system for that long. I'll buy a new MOBO, send this in for RMA and either use it for backup or sell it cheap to someone when I get the repaired board back.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Motherboard

Pros: 802.11n Wi-Fi module was easily up-gradable to 802.11ac using an Intel 7260HMW chip. Just unscrew the metal shielding that comes on the original MSI card and swap out the mini PCIe card. Very solid motherboard, tons of I/O ports. Really like the look of the yellow illumination. Since the Wi-Fi module is Intel based, it comes with out of the box Linux support.

Cons: MSI released an 802.11ac version just a few weeks after I purchased this - wish I had known about this as it would have saved me the effort on the DIY up-grade.

4 out of 5 eggsGood with standard, but not overclocked

Pros: Booted up first time. Still booting up. I'd probably buy it again. The competition doesn't have much more to offer (if anything).

Oh... the clear CMOS button is great! I'm so used to jumpering for that stuff.

Cons: I gave it 4 stars because seems like all MOBOs are IFFY right now if you read as many reviews as I have. So here goes...

Be sure to install the WIFI card first. Other components might get in the way. I'm not sure why the thing didn't just come integrated in the board with a jumper to turn it off/on.

With the NOCTUA fan, point it to the rear of the case (as apposed to the top. Your video card won't fit otherwise.

Get small (low profile) ram if you get the NOCTUA fan.

I'm no expert at overclocking, but I've done it on ASUS without issues. For some reason I set the CPU to 110%, OS froze. Set the RAM to 2400 DDR (which is what they are rated) OS froze. So I'm only running my hardware and standard spec (which is fine as they should last longer that way).

Microsoft Experience Rated 7.8 (dinged for RAM and CPU)
Noctua NH-D14
G.SKILL Ares Series 32GB (4 x 8GB)
SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW
Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W
EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 80 PLUS PLATINUM
EVGA 04G-P4-2768-KR GeForce GTX 760 4GB 256-Bit
MSI Z87 MPOWER Max LGA 1150 Intel Z87
Thermaltake Chaser Series Chaser MK-I

Other Thoughts: Ya, I really went overkill on parts. My build could have used a smaller case and smaller mobo to fit the components I'm using. I have like 8 empty HD slots and 3 empty disk slots. My PSU is only 1/2 used.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Happy

Pros: Nice Design, OC ready, lots of accessories and features, no coil whine

Cons: Bad UEFI design, not enough fan headers, AND the big problem is that neither my North Bridge nor South Bridge Initiate on start-up. (Full story in other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: Now i made the mistake of not checking the board before i painted the yellow stripes on the heat syncs and after i realized it was faulty they wouldn't take it back anymore which much annoy's me... for example i painted my ASUS Z77 Sabertooth and they said "Its fine take everything off that you painted and we'll send you a brand new one". Well MSI, this is a know problem with your boards you can google (MSI North Bridge Initiation or 03/04 post code error) and theirs people on the MSI forum and other places with almost the identical problem. I expected more from a board thats meant for overclocking enthusiasts but thats not the image i got from my phone call. I personally recommend something from ASUS, Gigabyte or Intel

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: Great motherboard. I've got a 4770k running at 4.5ghz no problem. Also great color scheme.

Cons: Uefi bios is cluttered makes it hard to find things. Needs to be better organized.
Not really a con unless like me you're using a swiftech h220 or similar cooler where the tubes come out of both ends of the pump. The clamp for the tube is squeezed up against the massive vrm heatsink. Again not really a con just a little annoying.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond review

Pros: Fast, good onboard cooling. Works great for high speed gaming.

Cons: None really (maybe somewhat heavy, but not a problem as long as you fasten it properly).

Other Thoughts: I had previously given this item a 1 egg rating because it died out on me quickly( several weeks after install). However, MSI was very helpful and got me a replacement quickly. I've had the replacement for just over 6 months now and everything is great. Thanks MSI!

5 out of 5 eggsnice overkill board

Pros: This board is amazing. It's loaded with 16 usb port capability (12 usb3, 2 usb2, 2 usb2 with quick charge capabilities), a good high number of sata3 ports, it's running the realteck hd sound system off the back ports which I have always liked (and make my speakers actually much louder than on my last system) and creative sound blaster through the amplified headphone port up front with virtual surround capabilities. The on board gpu features where great for gaming with Intel 4600hd while awaiting my graphics card order. And the control center/bios is well done and very easy.

Cons: There are not many issues here, but the included 2 port usb3 back panel needs to be a bit longer reaching. It was a hard squeeze which made my cable management useless on it since there's just enough length to reach from the header straight back to the case back. Included software is buggy and live update has problems updating some components, but the versions online work well. Install live update from the Web, then use that for all the other software installs and you'll be fine

2 out of 5 eggsRun Away

Pros: Lots of USB 3.0 ports. Includes even the kitchen sink

Cons: Poor design for SATA and USB 3.0 headers, user guide lacks references to some included parts

Other Thoughts: The engineer who designed this board should go back to school. The SATA ports and one of the USB 3.0 headers face the front of the board, rather than being vertical. What's even worse is that they are right up against where a typical hard drive cage is located, making it nearly impossible to plug the cords in. If your case has an indented motherboard tray, you have even less room to maneuver. If you insist on getting this board, plug in the cords before putting the board into the case. As far as the documentation, neither the Quick Start Guide nor the User Guide reference the extras, such as the WiDi module or the wireless antenna.
