4 out of 5 eggsWorks well with design envelope

Pros: Perfect board for my needs. Built a WHS with intended design specs of lowest possible power consumption yet powerful enough for the required tasking. This board fits perfectly within that spec. I purchased this based on the following criteria: 1. Manufacturer's reputation, 2. 4th gen cpu support, 3. minimal power consumption and 4. price.

Cons: Manual really inadequate if not downright poor. Seriously, that is far below MSI standards.
As some have stated this board is minimal in features but I believe that is by design and exactly what was needed for my purposes.

Other Thoughts: As stated in the "Pro's", my intent was to build a minimalist WHS. I paired it with Intel G3220 and 8 GB ram.
I think it is rather disingenuous for those who rant in their reviews about what something ISN'T rather than what it is. C'mon, it is a sub $60 MB so don't complain that it doesn't have features and performance of a $150 MB. If you purchased something that didn't meet your intended purpose, shame on you for not doing your homework.

3 out of 5 eggsOK Product, but not great

Pros: It's a OK motherboard: supports latest haswell CPUs, supports USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, and PCI-E 3.0. It has a great BIOS UI. If you don't overclock, it's a pretty solid motherboard.

Cons: Consider these before you buy:
1. Doesn't have HDMI port, only DVI and D-Sub
2. Doesn't have USB 3.0 header, which means you can't use the front USB ports on cases that supports USB 3.0.
3. Only 2* SATA 3 and 2* USB 3.0 (pretty much the same as H81 boards).

Also, there are some errors in the manual about the USB power jumper (JUSB_PW1 and JUSB_PW2).

Other Thoughts: It could be a perfect motherboard for some people, but if you need more SATA3s and USB 3.0 ports, need the HDMI port, or want to use USB 3.0 cases, you might want to get other models or brands. Also, the errors in the manual can cause serious problems, I hope it can be fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
USB power jumper is for wake-by-USB function.
If you have found any errors, can you please kindly point them out to us at usreview@msi.com?
B85 chipset is entry-level therefore its SATA3 & USB3 are designated by Intel this way.

1 out of 5 eggsmotherboard driver disc is defective

Pros: good build, seems to work after fixing the driver issue.

Cons: the motherboard disc came with the MB is defective and it wouldn't allow me to install the video driver! I tried browsing to the video driver in the CD but got an error message saying my computer doesn't not meet the min requirement to install the video driver! I tried two different MB driver discs (I bought two of motherboards) and both gave me the same error message! So I thought there was something wrong with Windows or my other hardware, then I spent 3+ hours trouble-shooting it; including re-installing windows, reinstall the drivers multiple times with the MB disc, calling MSI tech support, etc.....Finally I went to MSI website and download the video driver there, guess what? I was able to install it successfully! You can tell how angry I was!!! Once the driver was installed correctly, the computer seemed to work ok. But this is one of the worst experience I've dealt with any motherboard.

Other Thoughts: If MSI fixes the motherboard disc issue I'll adjust the rating.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Basic Motherboard Out There

Pros: Incredibly stable motherboard! All temps, voltages etc. Honestly has one of the best BIOS's I have ever had the pleasure of navigating. Quality components, just handeling the board I could feel it was built better than other motherboard I have handled in the past

Cons: The metal clamp that secures the cpu actually pushes the cpu out of its socket ever so slightly, causing a black screen/failure to post upon my first boot attempt. After figuring this out I carefully made sure the cpu remained seated while clamping and it has been fine ever since.

Other Thoughts: I am a steak and potatoes kinda guy when it comes to gaming. No sli or crossfire, no RAID, no liquid coolling, etc. Perhaps mild overclocking (which the utility for overclocking in the bios is excellent!) . I like basic systems, 1 decent graphics card, a decent cpu and memory is all I need. Yes this motherboard lacks many features but I find those features are ones I will never use, so why pay for them.

3 out of 5 eggsJust satisfactory

Pros: Works well and has no major issues.

Cons: 1. No onboard USB 3.0 headers, so couldn't use the front panel USB 3.0 ports on my case.
2. Not enough fan connectors if you want to add more than the bare minimum number of fans.
3. Only 2 Sata 6Gb/s ports.

Other Thoughts: This board has adequate features for the price, but if you're planning on using multiple fans or hard drives, or have a front panel USB 3.0 ports on your case, spend a little more money to get a board with more features.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little board, emphasis on LITTLE

Pros: Good component placement. Nice SATA cables with retention clips and a 90-degree bend at one end, although they may be unsuitable for a very small case. Fast boot time with EFI BIOS and WIndows 8. All solid capacitors.

Cons: Only 2 memory slots, so you're limited to 16GB of RAM. Only 2 PCIe slots (including the graphics slot).

Other Thoughts: The screw hole furthest from the I/O panel (closest to the SATA ports) is in a nonstandard position for an MATX motherboard - it is in the spot where an ATX motherboard would have a hole. This isn't a problem per say, but pay attention when you're installing it.

4 out of 5 eggsBang for a buck

Pros: Cheap.
Works well.
Hooked up a dvi to hdmi cable to my TV and it plays sound with the video.(I didn't expect it to)

Cons: Needs a standardized USB header for front USB ports.
The bios isn't great to navigate. Took me a minute or two to figure out where they were hiding the enable xmp function and set the ram to 1600.
Would like to be able to allocate more ram to the processors internal video.

Other Thoughts: -0 eggs for USB header .. i should have looked better.
-1 star for bios making me search through every option.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

USB header is a standard and universal connector.
If you have issues with your front panel USB connector, please provide pictures to us at usreview@msi.com and we can verify it for you.
XMP option is available under Overclocking menu in the BIOS.

Let us know if you have any questions, thank you.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT have USB 3 header

Pros: Cheapest Haswell board available. Runs as it should.

Cons: The product description lists that this has a USB 3.0 front panel connector, which it does not in fact have. Other than this, great board.

Other Thoughts: This thing is tiny. Smallest microATX board I've ever seen!

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad!

Pros: Price, very cool bios, small form factor.

Cons: Didn't come with a manual, so I had to guess and check for a few front panel connections.
