1 out of 5 eggsAwesome When It Worked

Pros: Cheap and simple to use. Manual is easy to read and understand.

Cons: After three months it wouldn't turn on so I did an RMA. It was my first ever RMA so I took it to FedEx because it was down the road. It cost me almost $50 to send it to MSI. I should have spent a little extra on a better mobo. That's not it, when I got the mobo back it was DOA due to bent pins in the CPU socket. I will need to do another RMA.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk ?

Pros: Easy to install, even in a tiny case.
Lots of SATA slots.

Cons: The first one I got only has one RAM slot working and not on the freq. of my RAM stick. Hoping the 2nd one I get is going to be ok.

Other Thoughts: I know I never should have trusted MSI and should have went with ASUS...

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing board for the price

Pros: >small form factor
>low price for a mini-ITX board
>supports the latest Intel CPUs
>military class components
>3 yr. warranty
>all the standard slots, plugs and ports
>supports full size PCIe x16 GPU
>very easy to use, one-click driver install software

Cons: >none

Other Thoughts: I had to build two small for factor desktops with the i5 Haswell CPU in it at a reasonable price for a dentist office. This motherboard allowed me to choose a very small case which was needed since it had to fit on top of a cabinet with little head room. It also came with a rebate which made it possibly the cheapest decent quality mini-ITX motherboard I have ever seen that supports i5 and i7 desktop CPUs. Most mini-ITX boards, even the non-Z-series boards, cost over $100. Installing the drivers was very simple. MSI's driver disk has a "one-click" feature which allows you to install all the necessary chipset drivers all at once. I usually use Asus boards but this one was hard to pass up and was well worth it. If you need a SFF home or office PC then this is a great board to start with as your foundation. It would even make a great budget gaming rig paired with a decent PCIe video card and an i5 CPU. I am even considering one of these for myself.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not reboot, usb ports not functional

Pros: Easy to install and POST quickly.

Cons: When you restart the system either through the reset button or the restart button from windows menu it doesn't reboot. It shuts down and just hangs on the black screen and does nothing.

Also the USB 3.0 ports do not work with 3.0 or 2.0 devices even though it shows in device manager as having USB 3.0 drivers properly installed and no issues. Have contacted MSI tech support but no response yet. I received the regular auto reply email saying they will be contacting me then I received another email right after with a survey regarding the customer service. Naturally this is making me sour...being surveyed for service I have not yet received.

I have

Other Thoughts: Without the usb 3.0 ports I only have 2 usable back panel ports which makes this system not very usable for me. Also having to shut down your computer rather than restarting it to avoid a hangup is a pain as well.

4 out of 5 eggsSeem like a decent entry level board

Pros: It works

Has more than 2 sata ports

System boots fast (Xubuntu 14.04, on a cheap SSD)

Post fast (1 or 2 seconds)
I had a board that took about 5 to 10 seconds to display the splash screen before *note to self check that board for a bios update*

Can boot using a USB wireless keyboard as a power switch, unfortunately you can't disable mouse input wakeup at the same time
The wake by PS/2 keyboard option does not have this draw back and offers a choice of any key or a key combo (there are 2 both use control in the 2 key combo)

Has 3 video outputs

Affordable, got it in a $20 combo discount with my case

Cons: Only 4 rear USB ports (knew that when I ordered it)

When I updated the BIOS from 10.2 to 10.4 the system shut off at 67% by it self, apparently it was supposed to do that but that had the scared for a moment. It also reset all the BIOS settings

Chassis fan plug can't control 3-pin fans, only 4-pin ones (-1 Egg)
* 3-pin fans will run at 100%
Fan control does not offer temperatures below 40C in the target range, be nice if it went down to 30C

Could not find option to change how long the post screen last

Scary crunching sound when clamping the CPU down, this is my 1st Intel build since it boots i assume this is normal
* I have built 5 AMD based systems (3 AM3, a FM1 and a FM2 socket)

If you need 3 monitors you have to use VGA on one of them

MSI does not label (or color code) there audio, serial, case pins, and case speakers plugs in a easy way to read manner and requires the manual to some time to get any idea of which set of pins is which

Other Thoughts: Did not ship with a haswell refresh ready BIOS
*The CPU I used is not a haswell refresh chip, i don't know if you can get into the BIOS to update it with a unsupported CPU (if MSI replies to this please mention if this board supports that)

Part List for this build:
DVD: LITE-ON DVD Burner SATA Model iHAS124-14
RAM: Team Elite Plus 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
SSD: ADATA Premier Pro SP600 ASP600S3-64GM-C 2.5" 64GB
CPU: Intel Pentium G3220 Haswell Dual-Core 3.0GHz
PSU: SeaSonic SS-300ES Bronze 300W ATX12V
MOBO: MSI H81I LGA 1150 Intel H81
Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced
OS: Xubuntu 14.04 64bit

If you are wondering the boot time is between 2 and 2.5 seconds after post, by the time the CPU fan spins down from the power up the system is at the login screen

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great for 3 months

Pros: This board worked great for the price. I was using it with an Antec HTPC case.

Cons: Suddenly one day the HDMI no longer worked. DVI and VGA still worked. I tried to use digital audio to bypass the HDMI issue but that was dead as well.
I dont know what is wrong but this is a total writeoff now because i dont want to not have a HTPC for the time it takes to RMA this thing

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Mobo on the cheap

Pros: This is a great board on the cheap as long as you are aware of the differences (and sometimes limitations) of the H81 chipset vs. the H87 or Z87 chipsets.

Absolutely no problems with the board. It was my first mITX build, so the orientation threw me off at first, but found where everything should go in the end.

Has USB 3.0 header, unlike Asrock H81M.

UEFI Bios is great.

Cons: None really.

Only nuisance is there's just one 4-pin case fan, that's true with every mITX board I looked at.

Other Thoughts: Other things I would tweak, not really complaints:

Ram slot only clicks on one side

PCIe slot locking mechanism was different than I've seen before and took a good couple minutes to figure it out. I prefer the press and release kind.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboards!

Pros: • Inexpensive
• 3-year warranty
• Solid capacitors
• ESD Protection
• Reliability (only one issue in 40+ purchased, see other thoughts)

Cons: • Only one clip on the DIMM slots

Other Thoughts: I have used these motherboards in over 40 systems, and I haven't encountered a single DOA.

I had one issue with HDD enumeration, but the issue went away after I replaced the CR2032. I didn't find it necessary to RMA the motherboard over a $0.50 battery.

I haven't had any issues with the USB 3.0 headers either. It measures ~0.8mm thick. There is no special ingredient when it comes to this part, or similar parts. If you apply too much pressure to the PCB headers/receptacles they will become loose, crack, or even break off.

While I'm not a fan of having one clip for the DIMM slots, I didn't have any trouble with inserting or removing memory. All in all, not a big deal.

4 out of 5 eggs2nd Review From My Previous DOA

Pros: Great low price and it packs good features for an itx board. 4 sata ports and is good for a low budget build.

Cons: The first board I received was DOA, but after receiving the 2nd one it has worked great for 2 months now. The only thing that I would improve on this board is the internal USB 3.0 connector. It falls off easily as other has mentionn.

Other Thoughts: I had rate it again as I only gave 1 star the first time and now the 2nd one is working perfect.
