5 out of 5 eggsgreat motherboard

Pros: This motherboard was awesome for this form factor. I would buy this again or the newer ones. Wifi was awesome till it broke on me :(

Cons: I had an issue about the layout of this motherboard so for cable management was hard. Also careful about the wifi cables because one of my wires ripped cause my wifi ports some how loosen itself, and of course I made of mistake and the wire got twisted and eventually ripped one of the wires. Now I don't have wifi and I forgot to get a warranty for this motherboard, and now newegg doesn't sell them anymore.(boo)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board. Fantastic price.

Pros: this board is great. i have no idea what others are talking about with complaints. i have a haswell i7 and 2133mhz ram with an SSD and this thing flys!

the UEFI is easy to work with. overclocking is simple and works every time. i pushed it up to 4.5ghz but settled it back down to 4.0 for every day. no issues.

also, the MSI live update wanted to update my bios. against the wishes of captain obvious, i allowed Live Update to update my bios in windows. all i did was turn off my anti-virus, and guess what, it worked. again, no issues.

i paired this board up with an MSI 760ti mini-ITX card. amazing pair. especially for the prices.

the wifi rocks.

plenty of ports, especially usb 3.0.

compact. powerful. great price. perfect for mini-itx.

and best of all, no issues. 5 star.

Cons: practically none that i can think of.

this is nothing related to MSI but just make sure you're ready for the challenge of building a mini-itx case build. fitting small stuff into a small case becomes very procedural. everything's crammed in there so you have to do one thing at a time and in the right order, or it wont fit.

Other Thoughts: normally an EVGA fan, but loving this so far.

1 out of 5 eggsMSI is not on my good supplier list right now.

Pros: The board is well laid out. It is fairly easy to connect everything to the board in situ. I like Black PCB's with white silkscreen. It hasn't been usable long enough to comment on anything substantive for now.

Cons: The board recognized my Seagate 500 GB SSD and my 3TB WD red drive. I intended to put Win 7 64Bit SP1 onto the SSD. Windows complained that it could not put the OS on this particular drive. It was connected via SATA1 with the RED on the SATA2 port. Since this drive is not known to be problematic with installing Win 7 I assumed the problem was with the MSI board/BIOS. I updated the BIOS from 1.5 to 1.8. I used the BIOS (MFLASH+ME) to update the BIOS. After this update and a CMOS reset the system refused to boot .The system fan and power supply fans run continuous except for a brief stop every 15 secs or so. The CPU fan tries to start unsuccessfully every 15secs ad-nausium. I can't get into BIOS. I tried a new Power supply assuming that the original could have coincidently gone "bad". This changed nothing.

Other Thoughts: I am hoping that I am just being stupid about something that is happening here. I am waiting to hear back from MSI tech support in a timely manner. If I don't I have my eye on an ASUS MB. I usually use their motherboards for my system builds. If anyone else has an idea or two I am listening. 1 Star because the system does not even boot to BIOS. System components: Corsair Obsidean 250D case, Core I7 4790 Haswell, GSkill Trident 2X8GB, Seagate 500 GB SSD, 3TB WD RED, Corsair 600M power supoply.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2).
2. Clear CMOS with jumper or battery.
3. Check your other major hardware’s (memory, video card, CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.

1 out of 5 eggsSticker Shock

Pros: I ordered two of these.
For the one that works, it works quite well.
The features are great and it is a beautiful motherboard.
The other one was DOA....

Cons: There are no cons for the board that is running. Placement of connectors on the board is good. It is a really good board.

Other Thoughts: This is the second purchase I have ever made of MSI equipment. Normally, I go with ASUS and thus far I have never had a DOA board. This is the first purchase of high end MSI equipment and I can't recommend this board for the reason below:

The reason I am giving this 1 Egg is because on both boards I received, there was a sticker that contains the serial number. On both boards it was partially stuck to the bag. I thought nothing of it and I thought it was for easier identification of the boards. So I just let it peel off an stuck it to the bag. Little did I know that this is the only identification on this motherboard and now NewEgg will not take the board back. I went to MSI's website but it basically sent me back to NewEgg for a return. So it looks like I am out $200 dollars because the company is too cheap to print the serial number on the board. I don't know who thought that a simple sticker not placed on a flat surface (it was placed across a few chips and such) was a good idea as the sole identifier on the MB but it was a bad one. So as of right now, I do not see myself purchasing or recommending purchase of MSI components to others.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad board

Pros: It does the job fairly well, with a couple of small problems (see cons).

I don't really have a visual case (there is a top window, but not very big), so I really couldn't care about what it looks like inside the case. I focus on functionality over fashion.

Cons: The biggest gripe I have at the moment is the audio, namely with my headphones, I can hear when there is I/O happening (I believe to my platter drive, not the SSD). It's definitely not completely random, which leads me to believe there's a charge building up over time, which, when released, finds its way into the audio output stream.

There are only 2 fan headers on the board, one of which 'belongs' to the CPU. Modern cases, even as small as the Corsair 250D (which is what I have), have room for more than 2 fans (The 250D comes with 3 (two to the opposing side of the GPU, and a front intake, which this board doesn't support. Currently, I only have the front intake fan running).

As others have mentioned, the layout doesn't quite feel as good as it could be. Front panel header should probably be... near the front panel.

Other Thoughts: I see MSI has released the Z97I... I might upgrade in the near future. I'll give the board some more time (I bought in February, installed in March) to grow on me. For rest of the components of my build:

- Corsair 250D
- Corsair TX650v2
- Intel i7-4770k
- Crucial Ballistix Sport (Very Low Profile) 2x8GB
- Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB (yes, it fits in the 250D!)
- Samsung 840Pro 256GB (Boot+Programs)
- Toshiba 500GB (Data+Saves)
- Windows 7 HP SP1 64

For headset info:
- Razer Carcharias

1 out of 5 eggsProblem Board

Pros: The board is aesthetically pleasing
2) A great overclocker, and an easy one at that.
3) The on board blue-tooth works great and has good connectivity. However, the driver that came on the disk didn't work and I had to get one off MSI's website.

Cons: After purchasing this mobo a month ago I have had nothing but hair pulling aggravation.

1) The motherboard takes forever to boot into windows. Before the MSI splash screen I get a black screen that lasts about 20 seconds. I should be booting in 10 seconds~ like my previous ASUS motherboard!

2) The on-board wi-fi is AWFUL.
I: I randomly get disconnected.
II: the speeds vary wildly (which was never the case when I was using my net-gear wireless adapter)
III: Sometimes I will boot and I wont be able to connect at all, but when I restart it magically starts working again.

3) The on-board USB (9 pin) doesn't work even after installing the drivers for it and re-installing them. A fresh install of windows didn't fix it either.

4) The bios screen is hideous and tedious to navigate through.

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to like this motherboard. I bought an MSI GTX 780 LIGHTNING and loved it so I trusted the brand. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a motherboard from MSI. A friend of mine warned me not to buy this motherboard, and unfortunately, I dismissed him. I would return it but I would be without a computer for a week, and I can't do that, so I'm stuck with this monstrosity until I can pass it on to the next unlucky guy.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
1. You can activate fast boot to speed up the boot process, and/or add SSD as boot drive.
2. Have you tried the latest WLAN driver from Intel's own website to see if it helps with the symptoms?
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3714&DwnldID=23715&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+Wi-Fi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Dual+Band+Wireless-AC+7260&lang=eng
3. Intel has released newer driver already, please kindly try the new version.
http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_usb30.zip
4. It's a simplified menu for easier navigation, but it may take time for you to adapt to our style if you came from other manufacturer.

If you have any questions, please kindly get in touch with our tech support team directly at 626.271.1004 for assistance during regular business hours from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific Time, or you can email us at usreview@msi.com.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: No problems, easy install.
Top notch wireless networking.
Superior audio (headphone amp)

WIth only the memory and GPU overclocked, I ended up in the top 1% of scores on 3dmark for my combination of CPU & GPU.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For those using this in an especially tiny case, perhaps with a low profile CPU cooler, I highly recommend low profile ram.
I bought 2 X 8 (16gb total) crucial ballistix sport ram (vlp) overclocked great running 1.5volt @1866 with 9/10/10/27 timings.
Other parts:
SG05 silverstone case (tiny!)
xeon 1230v3
MSI 770 twin frozr (remove case fan and everything to install)
NT06 cpu cooler
silverstone 450 sfx psu & flat short cable ki

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Until recently I had not pieced together a system in over a decade. When I decided to move forward on this one I spent several weeks reading specs and reviews. All came down to this motherboard. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed myself while putting this thing together. I could not be any happier during the build or with the end result. This board is the result of quality material and workmanship put together to bring you the latest technology in such a small form factor. My grandpa always told me "a nickel more, first class" BAM

Cons: Zero, Nada, Zilch

Other Thoughts: If it fits your budget you will not be disappointed

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfectly on new Linux machine, was especially pleased about Wifi

Pros: I ordered this motherboard instead of others because I saw it had an intel chipset instead of a broadcom one for the Wifi. I've had no end of trouble with broadcom wireless (especially with Linux and annoying with Windows.

The motherboard was set up into a beautiful working small footprint computer within hours (with my husband and I building). Wifi worked perfectly with no tweaking. Overclocking ram was very easy to set up - just go into the bios, I overclocked to 2400 with the ram bought for that overclocking speed (which is a nice pricepoint right now). It was also pretty easy to set up Raid0 to dual 740GB SSD via bios - for video encoding this is a good practical portable setup, and of course as advertised it would make a good portable gaming machine also.

Cons: one external fan connector. Not worth reducing an egg as cooling has not been an issue.
