OC Certified

OC Certified is a military class burn-in test for motherboards. Running Prime95 for over 24 hours with a highly overclocked CPU is already a stressing endeavor, but removing all airflow from the motherboard ensures that only the best motherboards survive. If a motherboard can survive this, it can survive any overclocking situation.

The MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX AC motherboard is equipped with all the necessary features to make sure you get the most out of your system. From the Enhanced PWM and Thermal Design that give you the best stability to all the easy features that ensure that you don't have to perform a lot of tricks to get great stability in your quest for performance.

Military Class 4 Components

Military Class 4 is the next step in high quality components. The Hi-c CAP, Super Ferrite Choke and Dark CAPs will make sure that your PC runs more stable under extreme conditions.

Hi-C Cap

Hi-c Cap is a very small, but super-efficient capacitor. Besides ensuring enough spacing around a CPU socket to install large coolers, it also allows for 93% energy efficiency. Thanks to Hi-c Cap's MSI motherboards are the most energy efficient in the market.

Dark Cap

With their aluminum core design, Dark Cap's have been a staple in high-end motherboard design and provides lower Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) as well as its over-10-year lifespan.

Super Ferrite Choke

Super Ferrite Choke uses a Ferrite core that is Super-Permeable. This allows the Super Ferrite Choke to run up to 95°F (35°C) lower temperature, have a 30% higher current capacity, a 20% improvement in power efficiency and better overclocking power stability.

Military Class Essentials

The core of Military Class 4 is based on the essentials which increase your stability in the toughest conditions. The humidity protection and high temperature protection ensure your system can survive each environment, no matter how harsh. The new structure of the PCB limits EMI radiation. On top of that the all the connectors have ESD protection in order to prevent short circuit.

The OC PCB used for the MSI OVERCLOCKING motherboards is a completely new design where 50% more layers are used. This allows us to optimize all traces for overclocking. Power and signal traces are isolated, resulting in higher efficiency and performance and more features can be installed relatively close to each other without causing interference. Every MSI OVERCLOCKING motherboard is tuned for better stability under extreme circumstances:

  • Increased number of PCB layers
  • Increased humidity resistance
  • Tight weave fiberglass PCB
  • Increased ESD protection

DigitALL Power PWM

DigitALL Power digitally steers and receives feedback through a DigitALL PWM controller. This allows for pinpoint voltage delivery and lower power consumption. With the switch from analog feedback to digital feedback, you also have the opportunity to implement Load Line Calibration.

Thermal Design

Besides inspiring visual awe the MPOWER Thermal Design was developed to deliver the highest cooling potential in the worst situation. Because it is optimized to work in low-airflow situations, it is the ideal cooling to use with your liquid cooling setup.

  • MPOWER thermal design
  • SuperPipe
  • Low airflow
Extreme OC Socket Design

What is more frustrating than not being able to properly fit your cooling solution on your motherboard? Through the use of Military Class 4 components we can ensure that normal coolers can easily be installed and the motherboard can easily be insulated for extreme cooling solutions.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Board

Pros: Love the layout and design, overall. Install was quick and easy (with one exception). Overall, really solid board.

Cons: Here is why I took off an egg: The WIFI-Adapter was troublesome to install and then flimsy even after screwing it into place. So far, I haven't gotten a consistent signal strength and I am thinking of just switching to a wired connection completely.

Other Thoughts: Not really cons, but some things to keep in mind. First and foremost, I wasn't too thrilled that the board had limited system fan capacity. I have six mounted 120mm fans for my case, and I was hoping to control all of them through the board. The heat sink surrounding the 1150 socket is a bit bulky, but it looks really cool. Other than that, the board is as advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst impressions

Pros: Came shipped with 1.7 bios (recognizes 4690k cpu)

Cons: Not specifically a con, but there is a lot going on with the led's at the bottom of the board.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks flawlessly out of the box for me!

Pros: Recognized everything right away, actual functional drivers supplied, everything WORKS. Excellent integrated wifi and bluetooth. Great price when I purchased it as well.

Cons: None to speak of so far.

Other Thoughts: I went through multiple ASUS boards that either had dead ports, bad sockets or I could not find the right drivers to play nice with windows 8.1 for for the life of me. So I decided that rather than RMA again for my third ASUS, I'd just try out an entirely different board. This MSI feels better made and was practically plug and play. Substantially less frustration with this board to get fully operational and since switching to it I'm infinitely more happy with my build. Can't speak of the overclocking because I don't have the need to do it right now. Fast wifi, my bluetooth keyboard actually stays connected, all of the USB ports work, fast ethernet. It's all I could ask for AND it was $80 cheaper than the other board I was using.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Board

Pros: Solid construction with quality materials.
Stable and fast.
Easy overclocking with OC Genie button in BIOS.
Intel Wireless module included

Cons: BIOS isn't the most intuitive coming from an ASUS Z97 board.

Other Thoughts: The Mpower Max was one of the easier builds I've done. It fired right up after flashing the BIOS to support a Pentium G3258 (easy process done via USB). I updated Windows and just hit the OC Genie button out of curiosity. It game the G3258 4.5 Ghz with 1.3v. Its stable at this speed and I was surprised to get a decent overclock with the touch of a button. The motherboard and its entire package exudes quality. Very satisfied with the purchase for a mere $97.74 after the promo code. There's no need to get a cheap board to OC the Pentium G3258 - just one generation back with a Z87 MPower works great. If you don't need SATA Express or M.2 support a Z87 will work just as well as a Z97 motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsGot a good one!!

Pros: I had this during the december sale... With rebate it come out to be $85. I like it & works as should. I have no interest in OC so cannot say how it performs. Great value me thinks

Cons: Problems with Bluetooth software. Sometimes disables itself and disappear from device manager altogether..

3 out of 5 eggscarefull

Pros: 8 Sata Ports onboard

Cons: would not boot out of the box

Other Thoughts: be careful ordering this motherboard, I understand components die or are DOA from time to time, this one seems to have a higher failure rate that some others.
For me the most disappointing part was the additional 20 dollars I have to pay in RMA shipping, for a product that never worked. this raised the cost of the board overall and makes it less appealing. I do understand that newegg has a premier plan with free returns on shipping, however, that would add a cost of 20, 30 or 50 additional dollars that I still feel a consumer should have to pay for a part that never worked. my 2 cents.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2), clear CMOS.
2. Check your other major hardware’s (memory, video card, CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.

3 out of 5 eggsSo So

Pros: Lots of expensive hardware. I never really cared much about having the best capacitors, mosfets, etcetera, but this thing has them. I have overclocked my 4960k to 4.6 Ghz for normal usage and feel that this thing has the adequate components to supply the power needed. I like how many USB 3.0 ports are available, the fact that it has a built in wireless adapter, and it looks pretty cool. The stock software that comes with it for overclocking is so/ so and I think the bios interface is pretty crummy, but the MSI extreme tuning utility is good, and all I need to play around with my overclock settings and compare my results overclocking performance results against others.

Cons: So far I have had a few issues with this board. One being that sometimes when restarting, I will get an AC90 code, and an infinite reboot loop. It can only be resolved by unplugging all devices from the USB 3.0 headers and then restarting. After that I can plug them in. Not something you should see from a high end board, but I am assuming this thing is still on heavy discount. I don't like the bios interface very much, it is confusing and doesn't explain how to manually change any of the overclock multipliers. The overclock genie gave me an overclock to 4 Ghz, and the second stage overclock gave me an overclock to 4.2Ghz, which in my mind is pretty pathetic. 4.2 Ghz is only 8% over stock for a 4690k.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the product, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at and we will be more than happy to assist you, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggs10 months - 0 issues

Pros: features, build quality, stability,

Cons: Software for killer ethernet controller. Never tried some of other OC etc. software that came with it.

Other Thoughts: Reading negative comments about this motherboard really surprises me. Of course motherboard can be faulty, but since I set it up year or so ado I never had to go back to bios to change anything. My i5 4670k is running at 4.2 GHz from day one. Memory at full specs speed (2400) It is heavily used for photoshop and games. Never had any hardware or stability issue. I don't know how many computers I built, but strangely I had issues only with "bulletproof" Intel board where almost nothing worked properly and Asus Workstation board, where I couldn't manage Marvel storage controller to work reliable. Other wise great motherboard too.

1 out of 5 eggsI would not recommend this board to anyone

Pros: none

Cons: As of yet I have not received one that worked out of the box, the first one was physically damaged, the second one will not POST. It seems this is a common issue with the board new. There are lots of post on technical forums and on the internet about the Z87 Xpower no post. The only fix for this is to return it for a replacement

Other Thoughts: do not buy this board

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsDisappointed...

Pros: Lots of features, good construction.

Cons: The last two pins of JPWR2 and JPWR3 do not match-up to the 6+2 pin connectors on my Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold.

Other Thoughts: I'm in the middle of installing the motherboard as I write this review so I'm hoping the board will run fine with just the 6 pins connected. I do not however expect it to OC very well. What's up with the flipping of the last two pins?
