1 out of 5 eggsGreat Board! Horrible Customer Service! Wast of Time and Money.

Pros: Board works great and functions as advertised. The OC genie is awesome and the O.C. control software is as easy as it gets. The Killer E2200 is nice and the wifi is an added plus.

Cons: The board that was shipped from new egg would not boot. When I called to have it replaced they did not honor the product they sold to me. The rep was not friendly, courteous, or sensitive to the fact that i spent top dollar for a "new" board that was defective. He was quick to state that this was a manufactures issue and not New Eggs. I think that when you buy something from a merchant and the item they give you is defective it is their problem and should stand behind the merchandise they are selling and not push it off and rinse their hands of the situation. On top of that I had to pay another 50 dollars to ship it back to MSI to get a replacement 3 weeks later. Once I got the board back from MSI i went to install the Cooler Master Eisberg 240L water cooling system that was purchased from New Egg. This items was defective also. Again I called to get poor customer service and refusal to return the item. The first question that was asked of me was " why did it take you so long to report the issue" First of all that is not relevant to the fact i was shipped damaged merchandise from New Egg and I would have known sooner if the board that was shipped originally was working properly. Once I found that the board was bad I did not proceed to open the cooler. By the end of our conversation I asked to talk to a supervisor and was put on hold for 20 minutes to be asked to send a picture of the item. I waited 30 minutes for a rep to call me back to hear I do not see anything wrong with the cooler radiator. I had to then send another set of pictures. Then I had to wait another 45 minutes to be told my supervisor is going to send it to upper management to see if they will honor the return. I should be called back with in 24 hours. Needless to say I as never called back and am guessing I will have to do another RMA. So here goes more money out of my pocket. With the added return costs I could have bought a better processor or other upgrades for my build. Many dollars worth of usless merchandise was bought in return is going ot cost me more than intended. Considering I spent 90% of money (and did not go cheap on anything) with them for this build, the customer service would be a little more professional.

Other Thoughts: Worst customer service I have had in my life. This was suppose to be fun and exciting. Instead it was stressful and horrible experience.

2 out of 5 eggsAudio is trash

Pros: Wasn't DOA...

Cons: Insanely loud "clicking" noises when you boot / reboot. Not sure if this is normal but its quite alarming, I've just learned to live with it.

Coming from a Z77 Sabertooth it lacked Fan connectors in my opinion.

The onboard audio is absolutely trash (and very confusing, 3 drivers? Seriously guys?) I see claims that it is an ASIO 2.2 soundcard yet, in Ableton Live it is not ASIO and suffers from the same latency issues as any other soundcard, still have to use ASIO 4 ALL, which then once the track is exported, sounds nothing like it does in the DAW, Audio is distorted, very hot signal. I have turned off all settings from the myriad of audio drivers and software that you have to use, yet audio is still distorted.

I'd avoid this board for the horrendous implementation of 3 soundcards.

3 out of 5 eggsz97 gaming 9

Pros: Nice looking, has on board red leds, I/o panel is all black and well crafted. has wifi.

Cons: Cumbersome wifi module, audio software is lacking, lack of space when installing 2 video cards (evga 760s here)

Other Thoughts: Well I bought this when it first came out as an upgrade to my z77a-gd65, I kind of wished I had of either went with a different board manufacture or waited for the z97-xpower. I bought this board as I am an MSI fan, but so far this board hasn't rewarded me, 1st negative is the board is bragged for having the best on board audio, however if it is it sorely is lacking in the software to utilize it,2nd using 2 video cards is tight, with 2 evga gtx 760's I have about 3mm of space I haven't gamed yet so idk what the temps will be but they said the board had extra spacing to accommodate this when in fact is doesn't, trying to use the 3rd pci slot ends in being unable to enable the sli ,again I bought this board for the so called extra room. 3rd like others the wifi module is a stressful ordeal and while I was able to install it, it was still a pain.
Now while I was able to get my raid 5 array up and yes there are 6 sata 3 port by intel and 2 more by asmedia, which was part of the reason for the purchase, the lack of audio software, and room for vid cards along with an annoying occasional "99" system hang leaves this 300.00 dollar board with a sour taste for me, maybe 230 would be more fair.
ATM I think I may end up re-installing my creative audio card as I think the software is better.
sorry MSI I have not been impressed

3 out of 5 eggsMSI Gaming 9

Pros: The board is as advertised with great features. Overclocking was a breeze as was the creation of my raid array (which was difficult on my last board).

Cons: The PROTECTED I/O COVER is a pain. Because of the way they mounted it to the board it elevates the board. Everything was slightly out of alignment with the I/O back plate. I had to remove this I/O cover to properly mount the board. This board supports two way SLI (if you were wondering I could never get a clear answer on that) This is because the PCIE bus speed must be the same in order to do SLI. Of the three options provided by the board only one would allow for a two way SLI setup. At the time I was attempting to SLI two EVGA GTX 760's but because I was forced to use the first and second PCIE slots there was not sufficient air flow to the first card and so it overheated. I have since went with MSI's version of the 780 in a single GPU setup. That was disappointing.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why they decided to include a separate module for the wireless capabilities for this board. I discovered this after the fact and had to remove the board to install the module so that I didn't have a gap in my I/O back plate. Why not simply do this in factory I don't know. The bios is functional although a bit clunky in how things are laid out. I prefer the Sabertooth BIOS. to this one. All in it's a good board but knowing what I know I would have went with a different (likely less expensive product).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
This is not a known issue to us, perhaps you can take pictures of the issue and send them to us to verify. A lot of times, this kind of issue has something to do with the warping of chassis's base plate.
Additionally, a 760 should not be overheated easily in SLI setup because it's not really a hot GPU to begin with, and better ventilation in the chassis will help somewhat but not tremendously.

3 out of 5 eggsUnstable

Pros: This board has nearly everything you will ever need. it looks great.

Cons: It's unreliable. Every few boots or so about half of my USB or SATA devices are not detected. Windows will fail to boot because it either can't find the system files or the page file, depending which drive doesn't show up. I have to reboot multiple times until it decides to detect all of my drives. Then the RAID control verifies and builds the array. This happens a couple times a week.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolute great board as usual.

Pros: Extremely well crafted board, easily installed with great locations of ports and great for overclocking my 4790k. Looks amazing with the red accent lighting on the Northbridge sinks and other parts of the board. Installation was quick and painless just as it should be. Wifi was easily installed. I have no idea what is wrong with the people that wrote these reviews, but I had the WIFI module installed in less than 3 minutes. The EMI shield also was easily installed while mounting the board to the standoffs. WIFI recognized on first boot under bios. I really don't understand the difficulty with this board. 5 stars all around.

Cons: Ok so, the only con that I have found so far, is there is a clicking noise while booting the computer/shutting down. Also while USB is initializing. I am suspecting this to be the audio relay, and is not a big deal as it only does it on startup or shutdown. Just something to look into maybe a quieter relay.

Other Thoughts: All around excellent board. If you are too stupid to install it don't spend $300 on it. Simple as that.

2 out of 5 eggsBeta Tester

Pros: Looks Nice

Cons: I can live with the Shield issue and even the wireless adapter problem. I have not been able to install a working OS. I've been in this line of work for a long time and build systems for residential and commercial customers weekly. I did not expect to pay this much for a MB and have so many problems. I've built 4 MPOWER MSI system in the last 9 months and they were flawless. I build systems on Gigabyte every week-no problems! Contacted MSI - no matter what HD, OS, or Optical Drive I used my install would fail at 87% giving me a error code. I finally took out my video card and installed win 8.1 via usb flash drive with success. Short lived with constant IRQ and Memory Management errors that Win 8.1 would dump to restart PC every time which led to HD error and chkdsk. Pulled video card and tried to reload again and received an entirely new error code once the os files started to install! Had to call it quits. wanted to get a refund but newegg has a no refund policy I failed to read before purchased.

Other Thoughts: I understand how complex these electronics and software issues can be, so I'm willing to work the problems out. Just thought these painful installations were a thing of the past. Guess I've just been spoiled and now I feel like a customer who has paid to be a beta tester.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to review

Pros: -Very nice design.
-has some red glowing "dragon fins"
-a lot of features(that I might not even use)
-live update(I have the maximus vi formula, no live updates)
-right angle front USB 3 plug.
-simple OC button.

*Fast WiFi
*Even faster Killer LAN
*Fast response from Customer Service on both Newegg and MSI.
*Very robust BIOS/UEFI
*4 point fan control
*Board info, shows in BIOS whats plug in.

Cons: *-EMI shield needs to be removed to install WiFi module

*-WiFi a pain to install

***-big issue is WiFi not working at all*** edit(it's working now, see other thoughts.)

-3 different audio drivers(or whatever the stuff is called), not a big deal since I use hdmi to my tv

**Some bloatware, not a big issue.

Other Thoughts: This build is for my girlfriend and she picked out the dragon design but wanted WiFi capabilities too. This is supposed to be the flagship mobo for the MSI gaming series and it is a complete disappointment. For the price paid, there shouldn't be an excuse for this kind of cr*p. The WiFi module is a pain to install, then it doesn't work. It doesn't show in the bios or anything. They tried so hard to compete with maximus vi/vii formula by asus but looks like they need to iron out some kinks instead of trying to copy their "style". Don't get me wrong, very nice looking board with features, but the EMI shield and WiFi fiasco just made them look like a jabroni. RMA is requested on this. So disappointed.

EDIT:

The WiFi is now working after I had to take it apart and carefully reseat the card. That was the email response and phone response i got before trying to go RMA.

per MSI:

to me

Hi Francis,

Sorry for the issues you are having with the WiFi card.
We understand that the WiFi card is a nuisance to install, and incorrect installation may lead to non-detectable device in the system.
Therefore, it’s best to pretest it to make sure before mounting the entire motherboard into the chassis.
This design imperfection has been reported to our design team in HQ.

Finally, you do not need to cancel RMA at all if you do resolve the issue.
Thank you for contacting MSI.

Sincerely,
MSI Service & Support Division

They also mentioned in the phone that the R&D team knows about the issue and that was their fix. I give it a 4/5 or 8.5/10 for everything but the WiFi install. My mistake was not testing everything before installing in the case especially i have the PHTC14PE installed. I also tested the other PCI-E lanes for my GTX 670 and they both work. So far so good. Also, the pins for the Wifi card are smaller than This symbol "!" so be extra careful seating it. Even though it had issues at first, MSI was able to help me and Newegg was also quick with their response. Hopefully on the next gaming 9 mobo they have a different approach for the WiFi and EMI shield so the end user doesn't have to worry about it much. Overall, i'm satisfied with the product and custumer service provided by both MSI and Newegg.
